Self Consistent Bathymetric Mapping Using Sub-Maps: Survey Results From The Tag Hydrothermal Structure, C. Roman, R. Reves-Sohn, H. Singh, S. Humphris

Christopher N. Roman

The spatial resolution of microbathymetry maps created using robotic vehicles such as ROVs, AUVs and manned submersibles in the deep ocean is currently limited by the accuracy of the vehicle navigation data. Errors in the vehicle position estimate commonly exceed the ranging errors of the acoustic mapping sensor itself, which creates inconsistency in the map making process and produces artifacts that lower resolution and distort map integrity. We present a methodology for producing self-consistent maps and improving vehicle position estimation by exploiting accurate local navigation and utilizing terrain relative measurements. The complete map is broken down into individual "sub-maps'', which …

Improved Vehicle Based Multibeam Bathymetry Using Sub-Maps And Slam, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh Jul 2005

Improved Vehicle Based Multibeam Bathymetry Using Sub-Maps And Slam, Christopher Roman, Hanumant Singh

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents an algorithm to improve sub-sea acoustic multibeam bottom mapping based on the simultaneous mapping and localization (SLAM) methodology. Multibeam bathymetry from underwater water vehicles can yield valuable large scale terrain maps of the sea door, but the overall accuracy of these maps is typically limited by the accuracy of the vehicle position estimates. The solution presented here uses small bathymetric patches created over short time scales in a sub-mapping context. These patches are registered with respect to one another and assembled in a single coordinate frame to produce a more accurate terrain estimate and provide improved renavigation …

The Ames Mer Microscopic Imager Toolkit, Randy Sargent, Matt Deans, Clay Kunz, Ken Herkenhoff

Randy Sargent

The Mars Exploration Rovers, spirit and opportunity, have spent several successful months on Mars, returning gigabytes of images and spectral data to scientists on Earth. One of the instruments on the MER rovers, the Athena microscopic imager (MI), is a fixed focus, megapixel camera providing a ±3mm depth of field and a 31×31 mm field of view at a working distance of 63 mm from the lens to the object being imaged. In order to maximize the science return from this instrument, we developed the Ames MI toolkit and supported its use during the primary mission. The MI toolkit is …

Superconducting Critical Field Curves In Uranium-Niobium Alloys, Jason Cooley, W Hults, Jason Lashley, James Smith, George Schmiedeshoff

George Schmiedeshoff

The uranium niobium binary alloy system exhibits a rich collection of phenomena for study. The composition range from 0 wt.% Nb to 10 wt.% Nb exhibits multiple crystallographic phases with interesting properties such as superconductivity, charge density waves and shape memory effects. We have extended the range of our resistivity measurements to as low as 400mK in order to map the critical field curves of these superconducting alloys. As a function of temperature some of the critical field curves have positive curvature which is somewhat correlated with the normal state temperature dependence of the resistivity. Work supported by the United …

Knowledge Transfer In Multi-Organizational Networks: Influence Of Causal And Outcome Ambiguities, Jennifer Priestley Jan 2005

Knowledge Transfer In Multi-Organizational Networks: Influence Of Causal And Outcome Ambiguities, Jennifer Priestley

Jennifer L. Priestley

Informed by the general concept of ambiguity related to knowledge transfer, we first identify and develop the concept of outcome ambiguity as to explain the ambiguity related to inter-organizational knowledge transfer among network firms, which, we argue, is not addressed by the well-established concept of causal ambiguity [34] [46]. Based upon this discussion, we develop the first two of our six hypotheses. Subsequently, we discuss two types of inter-organizational networks and how causal ambiguity and outcome ambiguity would be expected to behave within these network types. This discussion will form the basis for the remaining four of our six hypotheses. …

Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He Dec 2004

Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He

Tian-Xiao He

In this paper, we will start the discussion with the refinable generators of the shift invariant (SI) spaces in L2 (R) that possess the largest possible regularities and required vanishing moments. For the pseudo-scaling generators, the corresponding MRA frame wavelets with certain regularities are constructed. In addition, the stability of the refinable SI spaces and the corresponding complementary spaces, biorthogonality of the SI spaces, and the approximation property of the spaces are also discussed.
