Using Biodiversity Data To Assess Species--Habitat Relationships In Glacier National Park, Montana, Diane M. Debinski, Peter F. Brussard Nov 1994

Using Biodiversity Data To Assess Species--Habitat Relationships In Glacier National Park, Montana, Diane M. Debinski, Peter F. Brussard

Diane M. Debinski

Biodiversity surveys are becoming increasingly popular. However, standard analysis techniques for these data have not yet been developed. This paper explores the use of multivariate ordination techniques for assessing species—habitat relationships using biodiversity data. The research was conducted in Glacier National Park, Montana, and birds and butterflies were chosen as the taxonomic groups of study. Biodiversity assessment sites were established throughout a range of habitats and monitored from 1987 through 1989. Presence/absence sampling over the total number of sampling sites was used to classify species commonness and rarity. Approximately 86% of the historically recorded butterflies and 70% of ...

Pastoral Resources And Their Management In The North-Eastern Goldfields, Western Australia, H J. Pringle Sep 1994

Pastoral Resources And Their Management In The North-Eastern Goldfields, Western Australia, H J. Pringle

Miscellaneous Publications

This report commences with a brief section in which rangeland survey information is put into a pastoral management context. It then describes the environment in terms of types of rangeland and climate. Types of rangeland are described in terms of pasture types, land systems and land types. A pasture type is a kind of land at a plant community or landform scale. It is what is seen out of the window of a vehicle and what monitoring sites are located on. A land system can be seen as a pattern of pasture types in a characteristic position in the landscape ...

Water Quality Conditions In The Tidal Rappahannock River: Longitudinal And Dome Surveys In 1993, Kyeong Park, Albert Y. Kuo

Reports

Previous field surveys and modeling studies (Kuo et al. 1991; Park et al. 1993) indicated the presence of three different water quality regimes in the tidal Rappahannock River (Fig. 1), a western shore tributary of Chesapeake Bay: : Region I - hypoxic conditions during summer in the bottom water between km 0-55 : Region II - high chlorophyll concentration between km 80-147 : Region III - waste water discharges from sewage treatment plants To study the differences among these 3 reaches of the river, two types of field surveys were conducted during the summer of 1993: 1) longitudinal surveys in Region III and 2) benthic flux ...

Water Quality In Chesapeake Bay : Virginia Portion, Water Year 1993 : A Report To The Virginia Department Of Environmental Quality, Kevin Curling, Bruce Neilson

Reports

The Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program (WQMP) has three main objectives: (1) characterization of water quality conditions, (2) detection of temporal and spatial trends in water quality, and (3) creation of a data base that furthers our understanding of the processes that control water quality in the Chesapeake Bay system. The purpose of this report is to characterize water quality conditions in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay during the 1993 water year, which runs from October 1992 through September 1993. These monitoring efforts have been conducted with funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Commonwealth of ...

Native Vegetation Handbook For The Shire Of Narrogin, Shaun B. Grein May 1994

Native Vegetation Handbook For The Shire Of Narrogin, Shaun B. Grein

Native vegetation handbook series

The management of native vegetation and agricultural land is closely related. It is vital that both native vegetation and agricultural land issues are considered within the context of their ecological area of influence. Both have a wide range of effects on each other and as a consequence should be managed together. For example native vegetation impacts on the hydrology of agricultural land. Conversely nutrients can be transferred from agricultural land to remnants of native vegetation. This booklet is one of a series covering the agricultural region of Western Australia and provides agricultural land managers with information relating to the natural ...

Liver Lesions In Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Jamaica Bay, New York: Indications Of Environmental Degradation, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D., Thomas P. Augspurger, Roger L. Herman, Jeff S. Hatfield Mar 1994

Liver Lesions In Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Jamaica Bay, New York: Indications Of Environmental Degradation, John T. Tanacredi Ph.D., Thomas P. Augspurger, Roger L. Herman, Jeff S. Hatfield

Faculty Works: CERCOM

Liver sections of winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) collected from Jamaica Bay and Shinnecock Bay, New York, in 1989, were examined microscopically to determine the pervasiveness of liver lesions observed previously in Jamaica Bay winter flounder. Neoplastic lesions were not detected in fish from Jamaica Bay or the Shinnecock Bay reference site. Twenty-two percent of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined (n=103) had unusual vacuolization of hepatocytes and biliary pre-ductal and ductal cells (referred to hereafter as the vacuolated cell lesion). The lesion, identical to that found in 25% of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined in 1988, has previously been identified ...

Study Of Existing Information Concerning Water Quality Within Lake Mead, Vicki Scharnhorst, Southern Nevada Water Authority Feb 1994

Study Of Existing Information Concerning Water Quality Within Lake Mead, Vicki Scharnhorst, Southern Nevada Water Authority

Publications (WR)

The purpose of Task 010A15M of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) Treatment and Transmission Facility (TTF) contract is to conduct a study of existing information concerning water quality within Lake Mead and identify additional water quality studies that are needed to supplement existing data.

The objective of this task is not to discuss treatability of the raw water source; this is addressed by Task 010A18M, "Define Water Treatment Requirements." In addition, a narrative on the effect of pending Safe Drinking Water Act amendments and a determination of treated water quality goals is included in Task 010A16M, "Review Safe Drinking ...

Land Use Patterns In Relation To Lake Water Quality In The Long Pond, North Basin Watershed, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: Long Pond, North (2006, 1994)

Long Pond has been used recreationally over time for boating, fishing and swimming. Additional uses include drinking water and various types of waste disposal. In past winters, sawdust from lumber mills has been placed on the ice that covers the north basin of Long Pond (Ed Mayer pers. comm.). This may raise total phosphorus levels at depth and could lead to problems in the future. Activities which raise organic sediments input into the lake should be avoided.

A major purpose of our study was to analyze the present water quality of Long Pond, North Basin, including the biotic and abiotic ...
