Depositional Environments And Paleoecology Of The Lower Ordovician Pogonip Group, Opd Unit, Arrow Canyon Range, Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrey K. Donovan Aug 1992

Depositional Environments And Paleoecology Of The Lower Ordovician Pogonip Group, Opd Unit, Arrow Canyon Range, Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrey K. Donovan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Opd Unit of the Pogonip Group is a slope-forming carbonate sequence that crops out in the Arrow Canyon Range 75 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is composed mainly of grainstones, packstones, and intraformational conglomerates and also contains Calathium-bearing bioherms composed dominantly of wackestones. These rocks were deposited in a shallow-water, high-energy, subtidal, tropical marine environment. Nuia and Nuia-crinoid shoals developed on this shallow ramp and the area was frequently disturbed by storms.

Calathium-dominated carbonate mudmounds emerged on the Nuia and Nuia-crinoid shoals. Although Calathium dominated the mounds on a macroscopic scale, the mounds ...

The Origin Of Metalliferous Argillites In The Shoal Arm Formation Of North-Central Newfoundland, Volker Brüchert Jan 1992

The Origin Of Metalliferous Argillites In The Shoal Arm Formation Of North-Central Newfoundland, Volker Brüchert

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Middle Ordovician Shoal Arm Formation, which is located in the central volcanic belt of north-central Newfoundland, is a tripartite assemblage of hematitic argillites, grey cherts, and black shales directly underlying a flysch sequence. The hematitic argillites are enriched in Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Co. Factor analysis and principal component analysis indicate the presence of a hydrothermal component, presumably derived from hydrothermal activity in the coeval Lawrence Head volcanics. Unusual, (?) calcareous Mn-Fe-oxide nodules are present in the top parts of turbidites in the hematitic argillites. Electron microprobe analysis of a color transition from a red to a green argillite ...

Marine Sediment Classification Using The Chirp Sonar, Lester R. Leblanc, Larry A. Mayer, Manuel Rufino, Steven G. Schock, John King

Affiliate Scholarship

The chirpsonar is a calibrated wideband digital FMsonar that provides quantitative, high‐resolution, low‐noise subbottom data. In addition, it generates an acoustic pulse with special frequency domain weighting that provides nearly constant resolution with depth. The chirpsonar was developed with the objective of remote acoustic classification of seafloor sediments. In addition to producing high‐resolution images, the calibrated digitally recorded data are processed to estimate surficial reflection coefficients as well as a complete sediment acoustic impulse profile. In this paper, surficial sediments in Narragansett Bay, RI are used to provide ground truth for an acoustic model. Quantitative acoustic returns ...

Ice-Core Dating And Chemistry By Direct-Current Electrical Conductivity, Kenorick Taylor, Richard Alley, Joe Fiacco, Pieter Grootes, Gregg Lamorey, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Mary Jo Spencer

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Although quantitative interpretation of the low-frequency electrical conductivity of ice cores from central Greenland is complicated by temperature variations of the measured core, annual layers can be recognized in sections of the core that are not impacted by non-seasonal features. Ambiguities in counting of annual layers can be minimized by comparing the electrical conductivity measurements to measurements of dust concentration and visual stratigraphy. A non-linear relationship between applied voltage and the current measured across two electrodes complicates the quantitative comparison of measurements made with different equipment, but does not affect the overall shape of the observed features .

Ages Of The Whitewater And Fairhaven Tills In Southwestern Ohio And Southeastern Indiana, Barry B. Miller, William D. Mccoy, William J. Wayne, C. Scott Brockman

Papers in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

Alloisoleucine/isoleucine (aIle/Ile) ratios obtained from fossil mollusc shells collected at localities in southwestern Ohio and southeastern Indiana, where they occur in silt beds associated with the Whitewater and Fairhaven tills, indicate a pre-Wisconsinan age for these tills, which had previously been thought to be early or middle Wisconsinan.

The aIle/Ile ratios in shells from beneath the buried soil (Sidney soil) and till exposed near Sidney, Ohio, are most similar to values in shells obtained from Illinoian sediments at Clough Creek in Hamilton County, Ohio; Mechanicsburg southwest, Illinois; and Trousdale Mine in Vermillion Co., Indiana. The first well-developed ...

Desorption Hysteresis In Five Ion Exchanged Montmorillonites, Jerry Paul Fairley Jan 1992

Desorption Hysteresis In Five Ion Exchanged Montmorillonites, Jerry Paul Fairley

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

It is generally believed that the formation of recalcitrant (slowly desorbing) fractions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soils is due to diffusion of compounds to sorption sites inaccessible to bulk fluid. The exact nature of these sites, however, is not well understood. In clay minerals, researchers favor two probable areas for the storage of persistent contamination; sites between the clay lamella, or sites with clay particle aggregates.

To test the hypothesis that recalcitrant fractions are formed in interlamellar spaces, a Na/Ca Montmorillonite (Smectite) was ion exchanged with five different cations (K+, Na+, Ca+, Mg2+, Fe3+) to ...
