Analysis of reactive silicate, ammonium, phosphate, iron and sodium from cores taken from three glaciers in the Kashmir portion of the Himalayas are reported as the first in a series of glacio-chemical studies designed to produce proxy paleoclimatic data for this region. This study stresses the elevation dependency of such studies and for the chemical species analyzed which are most reliable for the purpose of the study.

Surface snows collected at various elevations in the Indian Himalayas were analyzed in the field for pH as part of a broader study of the chemistry. The pH values are lower than the predicted ≅5.6 for unpolluted precipitation. Analysis of NO3 + NO2, Cl, SO4 and NH4 indicate that these low pH values are not completely due to the presence of strong mineral acids. The strong correlation of pH with elevation (i.e. temperature) suggests that the low pH values are due to the snow being supersaturated with CO2.

Jakobshavns Glacier, a floating outlet glacier on the West Greenland coast, was surveyed during July 1976. The vertical displacements of targets along two profiles perpendicular to the fjord wall bounding the north margin of the glacier were analyzed to determine the effect of flexure caused by tidal oscillations within the fjord. An analysis based on the assumption that vertical displacements of the glacier reflected pure elastic bending yielded the conclusion that the effective thickness of the ice (i.e., the thickness which remained unaffected by surface and basal cracking and which behaved as a continuum) was ∼160 m 2.6 km upglacier …

A currently active rock glacier with a snout elevation of 4,055 m was observed in the Jammu and Kashmir Himalaya. Its formation is ascribed to stagnation of the terminal area of a true glacier.

[From the introduction] During the 1980-81 field season we conducted a two-part program: the first part was spent on the Rennick Glacier in northern Victoria Land, and the second in the ice-free valleys of southern Victoria Land. The primary objective of the program was to help elucidate the glacial and climatic history of Transantarctic Mountains ice masses by interpreting the records available from the spectrum true glaciers to rock glaciers.

The overall study area encompassed the St. John River and its major tributaries; including the Little and Big Black Rivers (and their tributaries); and all lands extending 3.2 km (2 mi) beyond the maximum elevation of thv predicted impoundment of the Dickey Dam (1,560 km ). The proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project in northern Maine is a multipurpose installation on the St.John River. The combination hydroelectric power and flood control project is located in Aroostook County, Maine, near the Canadian border. The two proposed earth fill dams located at Dickey are 10,200 feet in length with a maximum height of 335 feet. They would impound 7.7 million acre feet of water at a maximum pool elevation 910 feet mean sea level.
