The paper presents the results of many years of complex research issues related to the emission of fluorine compounds of iron and steel processes. They allowed to examine these processes used in raw materials in terms of the fluorine content and their impact on the amount of emissions of fluorine compounds to the air. Were determined by measuring the levels of concentration in flue gases and stack emissions of fluorine in the form of gaseous and solid compounds, including water-soluble components (considered to be toxic).
English title: Analysis of emission sources of fluorine compounds from the processes of ferrous metallurgy.

The article describes the problem of the presence of sulfur in the blast furnace process and identifies emission sources of sulfur compounds in this process. On the basis of the measurements and calculations, the types and quantities of these compounds emitted to the air were determined. It was found that pig iron smelting in a blast furnace causes emissions of COS, SO2 and H2S. These emissions occur by losses of blast furnace gas (COS and SO2), transport of blast furnace slag inside the furnace hall (SO2) and treatment of the slag by granulation (H2S). However, the most important are only …

The paper presents a review of emissions of main gaseous pollutants (including acidic constituents), some organic compounds (including dioxins and furans), particulates and heavy metals from cement kilns burning waste fuels.
A widely employed method to reduce the cost of cement production is the substitution of traditional fuels used in cement kilns with alternative and waste-derived fuels. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of waste (especially hazardous waste) thermal treatment and disposal at much lower cost than commercial incinerators. Characteristic for cement kilns high temperatures and long residence time of exhaust gas ensure almost complete destruction of organic compounds …

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to project the future prevalence and incidence of Alzheimer's disease in the United States and the potential impact of interventions to delay disease onset.
METHODS: The numbers of individuals in the United States with Alzheimer's disease and the numbers of newly diagnosed cases that can be expected over the next 50 years were estimated from a model that used age-specific incidence rates summarized from several epidemiological studies, US mortality rates, and US Bureau of the Census projections.
RESULTS: in 1997, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease in the United States was 2.32 million (range: …

An expression for the spacetime absorption coefficient of a scalar field in a five dimensional, near extremal black hole background is derived, which has the same form as that presented by Maldacena and Strominger, but is valid over a larger, U-duality invariant region of parameter space and in general disagrees with the corresponding D-brane result. We develop an argument, based on D-brane thermodynamics, which specifies the range of parameters over which agreement should be expected. For neutral emission, the spacetime and D-brane results agree over this range. However, for charged emission, we find disagreement in the `Fat Black Hole' regime, …

We report the results of our CO J = 4 → 3 line and rest-frame 650 μm continuum observations of the z = 0.93 hyperluminous infrared galaxy FSC 15307+3252 using the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. No line or continuum emission was detected, but the derived limits provide a useful constraint on the temperature, emissivity, and mass of the cold dust associated with FSC 15307+3252 and its molecular gas content. The 3 σ upper limit on the velocity-integrated CO (4-3) line flux is 1.6 Jy km s-1 (for ΔV = 300 km s-1). This corresponds to a surprisingly small total molecular …

Since the concept of Environmentally Responsible Manufacturing (ERM) is relatively new, it is not surprising to note the lack of theory-based, empirically-validated constructs and measures. Such constructs and measures are critical to the development and growth of rigorous research in this area. This paper develops and assesses such constructs and measures. Drawn from an exhaustive review of both the quality and ERM-related fields, this study uses the constructs and measures drawn from the Total Quality Management area to develop ERM-related constructs and measures. These are then evaluated using data from a survey of 526 plant managers in the U.S. automotive …

Two-Surface Virial Analysis Of Alkane Adsorption On Carbopack C With And Without Hydrogen Treatment., Chrystal Bruce, Thomas Rybolt, Howard Thomas, Tara Agnew, Brandon Davis
Chrystal D. Bruce
Second gas–solid virial coefficients for propane, butane, pentane, and hexane were found for Carbopack C and Carbopack C-HT (Supelco Inc.) within the temperature range of 323 to 471 K using gas–solid chromatography in the Henry's law region of adsorption. Carbopack C and Carbopack C-HT are both graphitized carbon black powders. Treatment of Carbopack C with hydrogen at 1273 K converts it to Carbopack C-HT and is believed to remove certain high energy sites or “hot spots” from the carbon surface. These two surfaces provide appropriate model systems to test a two-surface virial analysis. Surface areas for both powders were calculated …

The Penrose Dodecahedron Revisited, Padmanabhan Aravind, Jordan Massad
Padmanabhan K. Aravind
This paper gives an elementary account of the ‘‘Penrose dodecahedron,’’ a set of 40 states of a spin- 3 2 particle used by Zimba and Penrose @Stud. Hist. Phil. Sci. 24, 697–720 ~1993!# to give a proof of Bell’s nonlocality theorem. The Penrose rays are constructed here from the rotation operator of a spin- 3 2 particle and the geometry of a dodecahedron, and their orthogonality properties are derived and illustrated from a couple of different viewpoints. After recalling how the proof of Bell’s theorem can be reduced to a coloring problem on the Penrose rays, a ‘‘proof-tree’’ argument is …

We report the detection of CO (3→2) emission from the submillimeter-selected hyperluminous galaxy SMM 02399-0136. This galaxy is the brightest source detected in the recent Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array surveys of the submillimeter sky. The optical counterpart of the submillimeter source has been identified as a narrow-line active galactic nucleus/starburst galaxy at z=2.8. The CO emission is unresolved, θlesssim5'', and is coincident in redshift and position with the optical counterpart. The molecular gas mass derived from the CO observations is 8×1010 h−275 M_{{\odot}}, after correcting for a lensing amplification factor of 2.5. The large CO luminosity suggests that a significant …

Conditions occurring in cement rotary kilns assure high destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the most stable substances, efficacious dry sorption of acid gases in the alkaline raw meal and heavy metals bounding in the clinker. Adequate operation of hazardous waste incineration in the process connected with cement clinker production does not cause increasing air pollutant emissions. Magnitude of the emissions often does not depend of this if there are using wastes in the cement kiln at all. The work presents a review of DRE levels and stack emissions for selected flue-gas constituents during hazardous waste co-combustion in cement kilns …

A Kinetic Analysis Of The Conformational Flexibility Of Steroid Hormones, Steven P. Bradbury, Julian Ivanov, Ovanes Mekenyan, Gerritt Schüürmann
Steven P. Bradbury
For a set of 10 androgen steroids and estradiol (E2), the kinetic feasibility of conformation flexibility of the cyclic moieties was studied under the constraint of maintaining the B/C trans and C/D trans ring fusion of the natural and biologically active enantiomer. To this end, the conformational energy surface was quantified using the semiempirical quantum chemical AM1 model. The computational analysis included the location of Conformational transition states with associated barriers, and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations to characterize the trajectories of the rotations and the relationships of the transition states to neighbouring chair and twist conformations. Conformational transformations were …

Spectral Features Of The Stimulated Raman Backscattering Of Modulated Laser Pulses In A Plasma, Nikolai E. Andreev, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
The characteristic features of the stimulated Raman backscattering of short modulated (multi-frequency) laser pulses in an underdense plasma are investigated. A laser pulse consisting of a given pair of spectral components with the frequency difference close to the double plasma frequency is studied in the weak mode coupling approximation. The scattering of the component with the higher frequency is shown to be a five-wave resonant process, and the conditions under which this process is totally suppressed are found. The scattering of the component with the lower frequency is an ordinary three-wave decay process without any suppression. When the difference between …

"Wcfields": A Magnetic Rotating Stellar Wind Model From Wind Compression Theory., R. Ignace, J. P. Cassinelli, J. E. Bjorkman
Richard Ignace
A stellar wind model for a magnetic rotating star is presented. We use the semianalytic wind compression model that predicts the two-dimensional geometry of outflows from rotating stars and consider the addition of a magnetic field. In the limit of weak magnetic fields, in such a way that the fields are unimportant in accelerating the flow, the wind compression model can be used to predict the magnetic field distribution throughout the wind, which is shown to follow the mass flux distribution. A compression of field lines near the equator results as the flow of material from higher latitudes brings magnetic …

A Heavy Top Quark From Flavor-Universal Colorons, Marko Popovic, Elizabeth Simmons
Marko B. Popovic
Ordinary technicolor and extended technicolor cannot produce the heavy top quark unaided. We demonstrate that a flavor-universal extension of the color interactions combined with an extended hypercharge sector that singles out the third generation can provide the necessary assistance. We discuss current experimental constraints and suggest how collider experiments can search for the predicted new heavy gauge bosons.
Improved Treatment Of Loop Diagrams In Su(3) Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein
Improved Treatment Of Loop Diagrams In Su(3) Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein
Barry R Holstein
Baryon chiral perturbation theory as conventionally applied has a well-known problem with the SU(3) chiral expansion in that loop diagrams generate very large SU(3) breaking corrections and greatly upset the subsequent phenomenology. We argue that the problem comes from the portions of loop integrals corresponding to propagation at such short distances that the effective theory is not valid. One can reformulate the theory equally rigorously by regulating the loop integrals using a momentum-space cutoff which removes the spurious short-distance physics. We show that this reformulation improves the phenomenology for reasonable values of the cutoff.

The paper presents the results of an analysis of current pollutant emissions from "Katowice" Steelworks and Coke Plant "Przyjaźń" in the Dąbrowa Górnicza (Poland) and calculations of spreading of these pollutants in the atmosphere. The research have shown that there is a reasonable possibility of reducing the existing protective zone around these plants, which should significantly reduce the costs incurred for the purchase of the land and management of the zone area.
