Addressing Global Climate Change In An Age Of Political Climate Change, Brigham Daniels Dec 2011

Addressing Global Climate Change In An Age Of Political Climate Change, Brigham Daniels

BYU Law Review

For a number of years, many within the environmental legal community have advocated an all-out attack strategy of forcing the United States to address climate change by bringing novel lawsuits under existing environmental laws. In 2007, with the seminal case of Massachusetts v. EPA, it appeared that those advocating this strategy had a winning game plan. That sense grew and solidified when the Obama Administration came to power. However, over the past several years, we have seen a countervailing movement embodied in a growing resentment towards EPA and climate change policy in general. This movement has mobilized into a powerful …

Evaluation Of Pgaa Data For Provenance Of Lithic Artifacts, Otis N. Crandell Dec 2011

Evaluation Of Pgaa Data For Provenance Of Lithic Artifacts, Otis N. Crandell

Studia UBB Geologia

The objectives of the study were to determine whether Prompt Gamma Activation Analyses (PGAA) could be successfully used to trace the source(s) of various Neolithic artifacts made of microcrystaline quartz. Two macroscopically identical sources of jasper from central and western Romania were analyzed by PGAA along with five Neolithic artifacts from the Limba site (Alba County). Due to the limited number of trace elements, which can be measured by PGAA, this method when used alone might produce inconclusive results for discriminating between jaspers from different sources. The interpretation of the data may be used for general assessments of provenance involving …

The Use Of Tilt Angle In Gravity And Magnetic Methods, Uğur Akin, Betül Işikdeni̇z Şeri̇foğlu, Mehmet Duru Dec 2011

The Use Of Tilt Angle In Gravity And Magnetic Methods, Uğur Akin, Betül Işikdeni̇z Şeri̇foğlu, Mehmet Duru

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Tilt angle method, which has been recently used in investigating the boundaries of structures, reveals useful information on deep and shallow structures. Tilt angle is expressed as the arctan value of the ratio of the vertical derivative of the potential field to its horizontal derivative. The method was applied to Kýrþehir-Ý31 Sheet. As a result, the presence of volcanites buried under terrestrial sediments was demonstrated.

Stability Of Stratified Couple-Stress Dusty Fluid In The Presence Of Magnetic Field Through Porous Medium, Vivek Kumar Dec 2011

Stability Of Stratified Couple-Stress Dusty Fluid In The Presence Of Magnetic Field Through Porous Medium, Vivek Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The combined effect of magnetic field and dust particles on the stability of a stratified couplestress fluid through a porous medium is considered. For stable stratification, the system is found to be stable for disturbances of all wave numbers. The magnetic field succeeds in stabilizing the potentially unstable stratifications for a certain wave-number range which were unstable in the absence of the magnetic field. Discussions of oscillatory and non-oscillatory modes are also made.

Robust 𝒍𝟏 And 𝒍∞ Solutions Of Linear Inequalities, Maziar Salahi Dec 2011

Robust 𝒍𝟏 And 𝒍∞ Solutions Of Linear Inequalities, Maziar Salahi

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Infeasible linear inequalities appear in many disciplines. In this paper we investigate the 𝑙1 and 𝑙 solutions of such systems in the presence of uncertainties in the problem data. We give equivalent linear programming formulations for the robust problems. Finally, several illustrative numerical examples using the cvx software package are solved showing the importance of the robust model in the presence of uncertainties in the problem data.

A Stochastic Version Of The Em Algorithm To Analyze Multivariate Skew-Normal Data With Missing Responses, M. Khounsiavash, M. Ganjali, T. Baghfalaki

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper an algorithm called SEM, which is a stochastic version of the EM algorithm, is used to analyze multivariate skew-normal data with intermittent missing values. Also, a multivariate selection model framework for modeling of both missing and response mechanisms is formulated. By the SEM algorithm missing values of responses are inputed by the conditional distribution of missing values given observed data and then the log-likelihood of the pseudocomplete data is maximized. The algorithm is iterated until convergence of parameter estimates. Results of an application are also reported where a Bootstrap approach is used to compute the standard error …
