We present results for the unpolarized parton distribution function of the nucleon computed in lattice QCD at the physical pion mass. This is the first study of its kind employing the method of Ioffe time pseudodistributions. Beyond the reconstruction of the Bjorken-x dependence, we also extract the lowest moments of the distribution function using the small Ioffe time expansion of the Ioffe time pseudodistribution. We compare our findings with the pertinent phenomenological determinations.

This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep→e′p′γ reaction, which is composed of deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < xB < 0.58, 1.0 < Q2 <4.8 GeV2 and 0.09<−t <2.00 GeV2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these new data are discussed in the framework of the generalized parton distribution approach. Calculations …

We measured the g1 spin structure function of the deuteron at low Q2, where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory (χPT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of W ≈ 1.9  GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment Γd1 and the spin polarizability γ0d are precisely determined down to a minimum Q2 of 0.02  GeV2 for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several χPT calculations and models. These results are the first …

The internal structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) remains one of the greatest outstanding problems in modern nuclear physics. By scattering high-energy electrons off a proton we are able to resolve its fundamental constituents and probe their momenta and positions. Here we investigate the dynamics of quarks and gluons inside nucleons using deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS)-a highly virtual photon scatters off the proton, which subsequently radiates a photon. DVCS interferes with the Bethe-Heitler (BH) process, where the photon is emitted by the electron rather than the proton. We report herein the full determination of the BH-DVCS interference by exploiting …

Background: The deuteron plays a pivotal role in nuclear and hadronic physics, as both the simplest bound multinucleon system and as an effective neutron target. Quasielastic electron scattering on the deuteron is a benchmark reaction to test our understanding of deuteron structure and the properties and interactions of the two nucleons bound in the deuteron.

Purpose: The experimental data presented here can be used to test state-of-the-art models of the deuteron and the two-nucleon interaction in the final state after two-body breakup of the deuteron. Focusing on polarization degrees of freedom, we gain information on spin-momentum correlations in …

The unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) differential cross sections in 3He(e,e′π±)X have been measured for the first time in Jefferson Lab experiment E06-010 with a 5.9GeV e- beam on a 3He gas target. The experiment focuses on the valence quark region, covering a kinematic range 0.12<xbj<0.45,1<Q2<4(GeV/c)2,0.45<zh<0.65, and 0.05<Pt<0.55GeV/c. The extracted SIDIS differential cross sections of π± production are compared with existing phenomenological models while the 3He nucleus approximated as two protons and one neutron in a plane-wave picture, in multidimensional bins. Within …

Beam-target double-spin asymmetries and target single-spin asymmetries in exclusive π+ and quasiexclusive π- electroproduction were obtained from scattering of 1.6- to 5.7-GeV longitudinally polarized electrons from longitudinally polarized protons (for π+) and deuterons (for π-) using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The kinematic range covered is 1.1 < W < 2.6 GeV and 0.05 < Q2 < 5 GeV2, with good angular coverage in the forward hemisphere. The asymmetry results were divided into approximately 40 000 kinematic bins for π+ from free protons and 15 000 bins for π- production from bound nucleons in the deuteron. The …

We report on new p(e, e' p)π°. measurements at the Δ+(1232) resonance at the low momentum transfer region, where the mesonic cloud dynamics is predicted to be dominant and rapidly changing, offering a test bed for chiral effective field theory calculations. The new data explore the Q2 dependence of the resonant quadrupole amplitudes and for the first time indicate that the Electric and the Coulomb quadrupole amplitudes converge as Q2 -> 0. The measurements of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude have been extended to the lowest momentum transfer ever reached, and suggest that more than half of …

Unpolarized and beam-polarized fourfold cross sections (d4σ/dQ2dxBdtdϕ) for the ep → e'p'γ reaction were measured using the CLAS detector and the 5.75-GeV polarized electron beam of the Jefferson Lab accelerator, for 110 (Q2;xB;t) bins over the widest phase space ever explored in the valence-quark region. Several models of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) describe the data well at most of our kinematics. This increases our confidence that we understand the GPD H, expected to be the dominant contributor to these observables. Through a leading-twist …

Measurement Of "Pretzelosity" Asymmetry Of Charged Pion Production In Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering On A Polarized ³He Target, Y. Zhang, X. Qian, K. Allada, C. Dutta, M. Canan, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration Jan 2014

Measurement Of "Pretzelosity" Asymmetry Of Charged Pion Production In Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering On A Polarized ³He Target, Y. Zhang, X. Qian, K. Allada, C. Dutta, M. Canan, Jefferson Lab Hall A Collaboration

Physics Faculty Publications

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries of semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target was performed at Jefferson Laboratory in the kinematic region of 0.16 < x < 0.35 and 1.4 < Q2 < 2.7 GeV2. Pretzelosity asymmetries on 3He, which are expressed as the convolution of the h1T transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Under the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured 3He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and 3He. Our results show that …

We have made the first measurements of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) process via the H(e, e′p)γ exclusive reaction in the nucleon resonance region, at backward angles. Results are presented for the W-dependence at fixed Q2=1 GeV2 and for the Q2 dependence at fixed W near 1.5 GeV. The VCS data show resonant structures in the first and second resonance regions. The observed Q2 dependence is smooth. The measured ratio of H(e, e′p)γ to H(e, e′p)π0 cross sections emphasizes the different sensitivity of these two reactions to the various nucleon resonances. Finally, when compared …

We report measurements of the beam spin asymmetry in deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) at an electron beam energy of 4.8 GeV using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The DVCS beam spin asymmetry has been measured in a wide range of kinematics, 1.02<2.8 (GeV/c)2, 0.12<xB<0.48, and 0.1<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2, using the reaction →ep→e′pX. The number of H(e,e′γp) and H(e,e′π0p) events are separated in each (Q2,xB,t) bin by a fit to the line shape of the H(e,e′p)X M2x distribution. The validity of the method was studied in detail …

We present the first measurements of the ep → epγ cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region. The Q2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV2) of the helicity-dependent cross section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q2. The helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q2=2.3 GeV2. We present the first model-independent measurement of linear combinations of GPDs and GPD integrals up to the twist-3 approximation.

The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry AUL for the exclusive electroproduction of high-energy photons was measured for the first time in e→p→e′pγ. The data have been accumulated at JLab with the CLAS spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH3 target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from the interference of the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. The amplitude of the sinϕ moment is 0.252±0.042stat±0.020sys. Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the generalized parton distributions …

Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction 𝛾⃗p → p π+π- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data are compared with the results of various phenomenological model calculations, and show that these models currently do not …

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick Jan 2003

Coulomb Sum Rule For 4He, J. Carlson, J. Jourdan, Rocco Schiavilla, I. Sick

Physics Faculty Publications

We determine the Coulomb sum for 4He using the world data on 4He(e,e′) and compare the results to calculations based on realistic interactions and including two-body components in the nuclear charge operator. We find good agreement between theory and experiment when using free-nucleon form factors. The apparent reduction of the in-medium GEp implied by IA-interpretation of the L/T-ratios measured in 4He(e,e′p) and 4He(e→,e′p→) is not confirmed.
