Utilizing The Public On Public Lands: The Application Of Community Science To Monitor And Model Erosion In National Forests, Jacob L. Hansen
Utilizing The Public On Public Lands: The Application Of Community Science To Monitor And Model Erosion In National Forests, Jacob L. Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unpaved forest roads are adversely affecting coldwater streams through excessive erosion and the subsequent sedimentation of adjacent waterways. To help identify areas of concern, Trout Unlimited (TU) in the Southern Appalachian region developed a Community Science initiative to gather data on sediment sources and stream-road crossings. Volunteers were recruited and trained to monitor road and trail conditions and collect and submit data using a Survey123 application on their cell phones. Analysis of the contributed data reveals statistical connections between drainage type and both erosion level and stream sedimentation. The contributed data were also included as a calibration for the lite …
Late Cenozoic Evolution Of Sedimentation And Slope Stability Along The U.S. Atlantic Margin, Bradley Kevin Craig
Late Cenozoic Evolution Of Sedimentation And Slope Stability Along The U.S. Atlantic Margin, Bradley Kevin Craig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. Mid-Atlantic margin, from the Norfolk Canyon south to Cape Hatteras, exhibits three major seafloor morphologies: elongated shelf-edge blowouts, the Currituck submarine landslide, and a large slope-sourced canyon failure. The late Cenozoic evolution of slope stability on the Middle Atlantic margin can be linked to the framework geology as well as spatial and temporal variations in sedimentation patterns across the margin. The framework geology impacts sediment pathways, while the shape of the margin influences the position of sediment depocenters across the margin. Changes in sedimentation rates and sediment source dictate the amount of sediment being delivered to each region and …
Invertebrate Egg And Plant Seed Banks In Natural, Restored, And Drained Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region (Usa) And Potential Effects Of Sedimentation On Recolonization Of Hydrophytes And Aquatic Invertebrates, Robert Andrew Gleason
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sediment is the major pollutant of wetlands, lakes, rivers, and estuaries in the United States and it poses unique threats to wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). Sediment may impact the success of wetland restorations because burial of invertebrate and plant propagules may impact hatching and germination success, and hence, may hamper successional changes throughout interannual climate cycles. Sedimentation also reduces the pool depth and volume, further exacerbating the recovery of hydrophyte communities in restored wetlands. I evaluated the potential impacts of sedimentation on prairie wetlands from several perspectives. First, I evaluated the effects of sedimentation on loss of …
