The Directed Steiner Problem On Graphs: A Simulated Annealing Approach, Lawrence Joseph Osborne Jan 1989

The Directed Steiner Problem On Graphs: A Simulated Annealing Approach, Lawrence Joseph Osborne

Doctoral Dissertations

"The well-known Steiner Problem on Graphs is an NP-complete problem for which there are many heuristic and exact algorithms that are deterministic. In this dissertation a new approach to the directed version of this problem is made by applying the ideas of statistical mechanics through the use of the method of simulated annealing. A version of annealing is developed for the Directed Steiner Problem and compared with one of the best general annealing schemes. Then a comparison is made between simulated annealing and the traditional branch and bound technique. The dual ascent algorithm of Richard T. Wong is used to …

Graph Coloring Algorithms On Random Graphs, Shi-Jen Lin Jan 1989

Graph Coloring Algorithms On Random Graphs, Shi-Jen Lin

Doctoral Dissertations

"The graph coloring problem, which is to color the vertices of a simple undirected graph with the minimum number of colors such that no adjacent vertices are assigned the same color, arises in a variety of scheduling problems. This dissertation focuses attention on vertex sequential coloring. Two basic approaches, backtracking and branch-and-bound, serve as a foundation for the developed algorithms. The various algorithms have been programmed and applied to random graphs. This dissertation will present several variations of the Korman algorithm, Korw2, Pactual, and Pactmaxw2, which produce exact colorings quicker than the Korman algorithm in the average for some classes …

Paleoenvironmental Analysis And Test Of Stratigraphic Cyclicity In The Nolichucky Shale And Maynardville Limestone (Upper Cambrian) In Central East Tennessee, Lawrence James Weber Jr. Aug 1988

Paleoenvironmental Analysis And Test Of Stratigraphic Cyclicity In The Nolichucky Shale And Maynardville Limestone (Upper Cambrian) In Central East Tennessee, Lawrence James Weber Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

The Upper Cambrian Nolichucky Shale and Maynardville Limestone (upper Conasauga Group) crop out along a succession of southeastward dipping imbricate thrust sheets, which trend northeast-southwest in the Valley and Ridge of eastern Tennessee. In the vicinity of Oak Ridge and Knoxville, Nolichucky and Maynardville outcrop and drill core have been examined at six localities. The Nolichucky contains an abundance of thick shale and thinly bedded shale and limestone, whereas the Maynardville is composed of very thick-bedded carbonate, predominantly limestone. In central east Tennessee fourteen major lithofacies are identified in the upper Conasauga Group. The Nolichucky/Maynardville sequence is subdivided into three …

On A Multiple Stochastic Integral With Respect To A Strictly Semistable Random Measure, P. Xavier Raja Retnam Aug 1988

On A Multiple Stochastic Integral With Respect To A Strictly Semistable Random Measure, P. Xavier Raja Retnam

Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of multiple stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion was introduced by Wiener (1938). Ito (1951) gave a more general construction of multiple stochastic integrals with regard to Brownian motion. Later the study of multiple stochastic integrals with respect to non-Gaussian processes were considered by some authors (e.g., Lin (1981), Surgailis (1981), Engel (1982)). Multiple stochastic integrals have found their applications in areas such as statistics and quantum mechanics. Recently, several authors (e.g., Szulga and Woyczynski (1983), Krakowiak and Szulga (1985), Rosinski and Woyczynski (1986), and Surgailis (1985)), using different approaches, have constructed multiple stochastic integrals with respect …

The Role Of Term Symmetry In E-Unification And E-Completion, Blayne E. Mayfield Jan 1988

The Role Of Term Symmetry In E-Unification And E-Completion, Blayne E. Mayfield

Doctoral Dissertations

“A major portion of the work and time involved in completing an incomplete set of reductions using an E-completion procedure such as the one described by Knuth and Bendix [KB70] or its extension to associative-commutative equational theories as described by Peterson and Stickel [PS81] is spent calculating critical pairs and subsequently testing them for coherence. A pruning technique which removes from consideration those critical pairs that represent redundant or superfluous information, either before, during, or after their calculation, can therefore make a marked difference in the run time and efficiency of an E-completion procedure to which it is applied.

An Integrated Programming Environment For Pseudo-Code Development, Ipe-Pc, Nurcan Coskun Jan 1988

An Integrated Programming Environment For Pseudo-Code Development, Ipe-Pc, Nurcan Coskun

Doctoral Dissertations

"An Integrated Programming Environment, IPE-PC, that supports pseudo-code development has been designed and implemented. This environment is based on a Pascal-like language which is designed according to the requirements of a language-based environment. The nucleus of IPE-PC is a language-based editor which represents programs as graphs internally. The same representation is used in every mode of the environment (i.e., editing, compilation, execution, debugging and translation). The system provides facilities to take advantage of both top-down and bottom-up programming. Stepwise refinement has been supported by providing comment structures that can be transformed into procedures. Bottom-up programming is supported because it is …

Symbolic Automation And Numerical Synthesis For Robot Kinematics, Jen Sriwattanathamma Jan 1988

Symbolic Automation And Numerical Synthesis For Robot Kinematics, Jen Sriwattanathamma

Doctoral Dissertations

"This research analyzes three topics in robot arm kinematics. First, the direct kinematics which determines the Cartesian position and orientation of the end effector for the specified values of joint parameters is analyzed. Second, the differential motions concerning the differential relationships between the command variables in position and orientation of the end effector and the joint-controlled variables are studied. Finally, the inverse kinematics which determines the joint variables for a specified Cartesian position and orientation of the end effector is considered.

This dissertation presents a methodology for incorporating the artificial intelligence types of knowledge into automating solutions for the direct …

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang Jan 1987

Microemulsions, Lyotropic Liquid Crystals, And Other Association Structures, Jiafu Fang

Doctoral Dissertations

"Phase diagrams have been determined showing the extent of the inverse micellar or microemulsion region for several ionic surfactants and some cosurfactants. Hexylamine has been found to be a very effective cosurfactant giving rise to very good water solubilizing capacity at extremely low surfactant concentrations and very low cosurfactant levels at rather high initial hydrocarbon levels.

A fairly extensive study of phase equilibria of the system composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate, hexylamine, heptane, and water has been carried out. The conductivity behavior of the inverse micellar or microemulsion phase of the system shows the percolation phenomenon. Low angle X-ray diffraction …

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov Jan 1987

Intensional Reasoning About Knowledge, Oliver B. Popov

Doctoral Dissertations

"As demands and ambitions increase in Artificial Intelligence, the need for formal systems that facilitate a study and a simulation of a machine cognition has become an inevitability. This paper explores and developes the foundations of a formal system for propositional reasoning about knowledge. The semantics of every meaningful expression in the system is fully determined by its intension, the set of complexes in which the expression is confirmed. The knowledge system is based on three zeroth-order theories of epistemic reasoning for consciousness, knowledge and entailed knowledge. The results presented in the paper determine the soundness and the completeness of …

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang Jan 1987

Amphiphile Association Structures, Yun Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

"The amphiphile association behavior of Aerosol OT (sodium di-w-ethylhexylsulfoccinate) and p-xylene in combination with mixtures of different ratios of glycerol/water systems was studied and compared to that in the corresponding water and glycerol systems. The presence of glycerol strongly destabilized the inverse hexagonal liquid crystal phase observed in the aqueous system. The glycerol showed more ability to penetrate into the amphiphile bilayer than water in the lamellar liquid crystal phase. The influences of water and glycerol on the organization of amphiphile in the lamellar liquid crystal phase are of the same order.

The gross diffusion coefficient of 1% 2,4-diamino-6-piperidinopyrimidine-3-oxide in …

Mappings Of Anr's Whose Images Are Anr's, Jung-In Kang Choi Jun 1986

Mappings Of Anr's Whose Images Are Anr's, Jung-In Kang Choi

Doctoral Dissertations

Recently, R.J. Daverman and J.J. Walsh modified an example due to J. Taylor to obtain an example of a cell-like map from a compactum with non-trivial shape onto the Hilbert cube Q such that the non-degeneracy set is contained in the countable union of finite dimensional closed subsets of Q. Previously, G. Kozlowski proved that a cell-like map f: X' → X from a compact ANR X' onto a metric space X is a hereditary shape equivalence if there exists a sequence {Bn}∞n=1 of finite dimensional closed subsets of X such that the non-degeneracy set is contained …

A Semantic Basis For Parallel Algorithm Design, Roger E. Eggen Jan 1986

A Semantic Basis For Parallel Algorithm Design, Roger E. Eggen

Doctoral Dissertations

"As computing demands increase, emphasis is being placed on parallel architectures- To efficiently use parallel machines, software must be designed to take advantage of these machines. This research concentrates on an abstraction of algorithm design to permit the expression of parallel programs. The abstraction emphasizes thought about algorithms at a high level as opposed to algorithm implementation at a statement level. A model based on data flow allows algorithm expression using flow diagrams. The model specifies operating system requirements that support parallel programming at a module level. Paths are used to carry data between modules. Data enter modules through ports. …

Amphiphilic Association Structures And Some Aspects Of Foam Stability, Jia-Hwa Fang Jan 1986

Amphiphilic Association Structures And Some Aspects Of Foam Stability, Jia-Hwa Fang

Doctoral Dissertations

"This investigation was performed in order to study two interesting and important problems in foams.

Foam separation was studied in the model system of water - sodium octylsulfonate - decanol. The efficiency of foam separation as a function of surfactant concentration and decanol content were measured. The results were related to the association structures of amphiphiles in aqueous systems.

Foam polymerization was conducted in the amphiphilic system containing water, polymerizable surfactant and oleyl alcohol. Liquid foams were produced in one three - phase region. The location and optical pattern of liquid crystals on the foam surface were observed by photomicroscope …

Confinement Of Electron Orbits And The Interaction Between The Electron Beam And Cavity Modes In The Orbitron Maser, Wlodzimierz Nakonieczny Jun 1985

Confinement Of Electron Orbits And The Interaction Between The Electron Beam And Cavity Modes In The Orbitron Maser, Wlodzimierz Nakonieczny

Doctoral Dissertations

The Orbitron maser, developed over recent years in the University of Tennessee Plasma Laboratory, is an alternative microwave source, capable of producing microwave radiation up to the submillimeter range. It operates on the basis of interaction between an electrostatically confined electron cloud and electromagnetic field in the Orbitron resonator. Good confinement of the cloud is very important for an efficient operation of the Orbitron, and is directly related to the shape of electron orbits in the device. It appears that the radial confinement can be determined by two simple criteria concerning the electron's angular momentum L and energy E. The …

A Parallel Branch And Bound Algorithm For Integer Linear Programming Models, Rochelle L. Boehning Jan 1985

A Parallel Branch And Bound Algorithm For Integer Linear Programming Models, Rochelle L. Boehning

Doctoral Dissertations

"A parallel branch and bound algorithm is developed for use with MIMD computers to study the efficiency of parallel processors on general integer linear programming problems. The Haldi and IBM test problems and a System Design model are used in the implementation of the algorithm. Initially the algorithm solves the Haldi and IBM test problems on a single processor computer which simulates a multiple processor computer. The algorithm is then implemented on the Denelcor HEP multiprocessor using two of the IBM problems to compare the results of the simulation to the results using an MIMD computer. Finally the algorithm is …

The Precambrian Volcanic Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Des Arc Ne 7 1/2 Minute Quadrangle, South Central St. Francois Mountains, Missouri, Vernon Max Brown Jan 1983

The Precambrian Volcanic Stratigraphy And Petrology Of The Des Arc Ne 7 1/2 Minute Quadrangle, South Central St. Francois Mountains, Missouri, Vernon Max Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Precambrian volcanics in the Des Arc NE 7½ minute quadrangle are composed predominantly of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs with minor rhyolitic, trachytic, and andesitic lavas, and basaltic dikes. Thirty-seven volcanic units were identified, mapped, and informally named. A minimum of 1,000 meters of volcanic section is present. The rhyolites consist of phenocrysts of albitized alkali feldspar, albitic plagioclase, quartz, opaques, and ferromagnesium relicts set in a devitrified and locally recrystallized felsitic matrix. Pumice and lithophysal structures are common in the ash flows.

Chemically, the rhyolites are quite similar. The potassium to sodium ratio in individual units, however, tends to vary …

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial Jan 1982

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates various related topics around the exciting concept: "Infinite Divisibility." First, two intricate distributions, namely, the univariate generalized Waring and the hyper-Poisson are proved to be infinitely and noninfinitely divisible, respectively. Analysis and computer approaches are employed. This itself extends the use of some results introduced by Katti, Steutel and Warde. Secondly, generalizations to Warde, Katti and Steutel's sufficient conditions and related results are achieved. Then, numerical application is presented. Thirdly, characterizations through infinite and finite divisibility are obtained. The Poisson, negative binomial, geometric, Bernoulli and uniform c haracterizations in terms of infinite divisibility are deduced. Some of …

Mineralogical, Textural, And Paragenetic Studies Of Selected Ore Deposits Of The Southeast Missouri Lead-Zinc-Copper District And Their Genetic Implications, Kenneth Bruce Horrall Jan 1982

Mineralogical, Textural, And Paragenetic Studies Of Selected Ore Deposits Of The Southeast Missouri Lead-Zinc-Copper District And Their Genetic Implications, Kenneth Bruce Horrall

Doctoral Dissertations

“A detailed paragenetic study of Pb-Zn-Cu ores from the Viburnum Number 28, Brushy Creek, and Goose Creek mines in the Southeast Missouri lead district indicates a complicated paragenesis characterized by repeated periods of mineral deposition. The sequence is composed of nineteen minerals including abundant galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, dolomite, calcite, and quartz and minor siegenite, bornite, bravoite, blaubleibender covellite, covellite, gersdorffite, digenite, enargite, tennantite, dickite, and malachite.

The paragenesis indicates that the ore solutions evolved in the following order: (1) Cu-rich, (2) Co-Ni-rich, (3) Pb-Zn-rich, and (4) Fe-rich. Subsequent repeated generations include cubic galena, later sphalerite, and minor crystalline …

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Some Less Stable Oxidation States Of Selected Lanthanide And Actinide Elements, David Edward Hobart Jun 1981

Electrochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Some Less Stable Oxidation States Of Selected Lanthanide And Actinide Elements, David Edward Hobart

Doctoral Dissertations

The technique of simultaneous observation of electrochemical and spectroscopic properties (spectroelectrochemistry) at optically transparent electrodes (OTE's) has been applied to the generation and characterization of some less stable oxidation states of selected lanthanide and actinide elements (Ce, Pr, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, U, Np, Am, and Cm) in complexing and noncomplexing aqueous solutions. Optically transparent electrodes used in this study included reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) and metal screen OTE's and a new OTE made from porous metal foam (PMF).

Cyclic voltammetry at microelectrodes was used in conjunction with spectroelectrochemistry for the study of oxidation-reduction (redox) couples. In some cases additional …

Applications Of Differential Inequalities To Persistence And Extinction Problems For Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Linda Joy Allen Feb 1981

Applications Of Differential Inequalities To Persistence And Extinction Problems For Reaction-Diffusion Systems, Linda Joy Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

Systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations representing models of competition, predation, and mutualism are presented and discussed. The models are divided into two categories, patch models and continuous models which can be represented by systems of ordinary differential equations or by systems of partial differential equations, respectively. Within each of these categories there are four types of diffusion mechanisms, random, biased, directed, and predator-prey diffusion. Conditions for system persistence and extinction are sought.

For the patch models, existence, uniqueness, positivity, and boundedness of solutions are discussed. Persistence of a nonnegative component ui (t) means limsup/t→∞ ui (t) > 0 versus …

Kinetic Processes In A High Pressure Laser Generated Plasma, Danny Joe Krebs Jan 1981

Kinetic Processes In A High Pressure Laser Generated Plasma, Danny Joe Krebs

Doctoral Dissertations

"A dense sodium vapor in a high-pressure noble buffer has been simultaneously excited by short (4 ns) laser pulses from two lasers: ii the first tuned to one of the 'D' line transitions and the second tuned to either the photoionization threshold of the 3p states near 406 nm or to a higher level 3p-nd resonance. The population densities of the excited levels of atomic sodium were measured with temporal resolution by absolute intensity measurements of excited state fluorescence. At early times (~100 ns), excited state populations are determined by energy transfer collisions between two laser-excited 3p atoms while the …

A Thermochemical Study Of The Ore Deposits Of The Milliken Mine, New Lead Belt, Missouri, Douglas L. Rickman Jan 1981

A Thermochemical Study Of The Ore Deposits Of The Milliken Mine, New Lead Belt, Missouri, Douglas L. Rickman

Doctoral Dissertations

"The ore body at the Milliken mine is a typical Mississippi Valleytype ore deposit. Mineralization is in a dolostone and structures are subtle, but very important ore controls. The major mineralogy is simple, predominately galena, luminescent hydrothermal dolomite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Twenty-three additional minerals have been identified in the ores, including barite and Pb-aragonite, bot h of which have not previously been recognized in the district.

Paragenetically, the ores are very complex, with four major, distinct periods of mineralization plus numerous periods of dissolution. The paragenesis provides evidence for the dynamic, evolving nature of the ore system. Galena textures, euhedral …

Boron Implanted Strontium Titanate, Connie Macdonald Cooper Jan 1981

Boron Implanted Strontium Titanate, Connie Macdonald Cooper

Doctoral Dissertations

"Single crystals of strontium titanate implanted with boron were found to have highly conductive surface layers. The effects of varying dose from 1016 to 1017 ions/cm2, implantation voltage from 50 to 75 keV, and annealing conditions on the room temperature surface resistance and Hall mobility are presented in this study. A major result is that, for the most part, variation of the implantation voltage did not have a major effect on the sheet resistances obtained by boron implantation of strontium titanate, while dose and annealing conditions have major effects.

Doses of 5 X 1016 ions/cm …

An Investigation Of The Nickel-Cobalt Occurrence In The Southeast Missouri Mining District, David Ray Jessey Jan 1981

An Investigation Of The Nickel-Cobalt Occurrence In The Southeast Missouri Mining District, David Ray Jessey

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study of the occurrence of nickel and cobalt in the Southeast Missouri Mining District has revealed several significant geochemical trends and mineralogical relationships. Regional geochemical studies indicate that the greatest concentration of nickel and cobalt occurs in the Fredericktown area. Mines in the Viburnum Trend also have significant concentrations of these metals. Studies of the Viburnum Trend have established that both nickel and cobalt decrease in concentration southward from the Magmont mine to the Brushy Creek mine, increase at the Fletcher mine, and decrease again at the Sweetwater mine.

A detailed geochemical study of the Buick mine has shown …

Neutron Activation Analysis Of Nuclides From Stellar And Man-Induced Nuclear Reactions, Lawrence Lee Oliver Jan 1981

Neutron Activation Analysis Of Nuclides From Stellar And Man-Induced Nuclear Reactions, Lawrence Lee Oliver

Doctoral Dissertations

"Neutron activation and γ-counting were used to determine the relative abundances of six stable tellurium isotopes in the acid-etched residues of the Allende meteorite. The results were correlated with the isotopic compositions of xenon and the elemental abundances of helium and neon in similarly prepared residues. Nucleosynthesis appears to be the only viable explanation for the anomalous isotopic and elemental compositions observed in these residues. Our results suggest that the solar system condensed from an isotopically and chemically zoned nebula that was produced by the explosion of a supernova, concentric with the present sun.

A combination of neutron activation and …

I. Extracellular Metabolites From Coprinus Macrorhizus Microsporus. Isolation And Characterization Of Hydroxylagopodin B. Ii. The Cell Wall Composition And Structure Of Coprinus Macrorhizus Microsporus, Carey Bernard Bottom

Doctoral Dissertations

“A purple pigment excreted into the culture medium of a mutant strain of the basidiomycete, Coprinus macrorhizus var. microsporus (ATCC 34960) has been isolated and characterized as hydroxylagopodin B based on ultraviolet, infrared, and mass spectral data. A wild-type strain of C. macrorhizus microsporus does not produce the purple pigment, however it does produce lagopodin B which is yellow in solution. Identification of lagopodin B was based on its melting point, the purple color of its alkaline solution, the mass spectrum, and mobility equivalence with a standard by thin-layer chromatography. The production of hydroxylagopodin B in the mutant strain is …

Conclusion: In the present work a new experimental device was built, tested, and applied to the study of NIR's of a basic series of organic molecules. The importance of this work is threefold:

1. It has demonstrated that such a device can yield accurate values of electron affinities and vertical attachment energies.

2. A complete series of fluorine-substituted benzene derivatives has been studied to yield their electron affinities and/or vertical attachment energies. This has provided new insights concerning the negative ion states of these molecules.

3. Solid samples (with sufficient vapor pressures) can be studied with the present device to …

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb Jan 1978

The Paleontology And Biostratigraphy Of The Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation Of Missouri, Bruce L. Stinchcomb

Doctoral Dissertations

"The biostratigraphy, paleoecology and paleontology of the Lower Ordovician Gasconade Formation in Missouri is reinvestigated in an attempt to solve problems that have arisen since the classic earlier studies by Ulrich, Bridge and others. Twelve faunal zones are established, many based on primitive mollusks which dominate the formation. The oldest of these, in the Van Buren Member, is the Hypseloaonus Zone. This is followed by a zone characterized by the primitive cephalopod Dakeoaeras then a zone dominated by the gastropod Sinuopea. These zones are succeeded by the Euomphalopsis, Matthevia and Ozarkina Zones which lie stratigraphically below the Cryptozoon Zone, …

Inferences On The Shape Parameter Of The Gamma Distribution And Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds From Censored Data, James Wyckoff Jan 1978

Inferences On The Shape Parameter Of The Gamma Distribution And Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds From Censored Data, James Wyckoff

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation is presented in publication form and consists of two articles. The first article considers inferential procedures on the shape parameter of a gamma distribution from censored sampling. Moments for the statistic T = log(x̅r/x͠r) are found and used to derive a two-moment chi-square approximation for T. This approximation is then used for testing, estimating, and setting confidence bounds on the shape parameter of a gamma distribution. The second article concerns the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for the variances of estimators, where the estimators are based on censored data. Convenient techniques are derived to evaluate the …

Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols Jan 1977

Geology Of The Southern Half Of The Stoutland, Missouri Quadrangle, Chester Encell Nichols

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation area lies on the western flank of the Ozark uplift between Lebanon and Camdenton, Missouri. In the northwestern corner of the study area a portion of the Decaturville cryptoexplosive structure is exposed. The dominant structure outside the disturbed zone is a northwest-trending asymmetrical anticline with a subsidiary normal fault dipping southwest on the steeper southwest limb.

The area is mapped in considerable detail in order to describe subtle structural features. To overcome a problem of poor exposures, new key beds are defined which greatly increase structural control. Significant structures recognized as a result are the Dry Auglaize anticline, …
