Matlab Processing Scripts To Accompany Spatially Resolved Measurements Of Crosslinking In Uv-Curable Coatings Using Single-Sided Nmr, Madeline Brass, Frances Jude Morin, Tyler Meldrum

Data

These Matlab scripts are used to import CPMG data collected using a Kea spectrometer (through the program Prospa), and to process each echo using the Fourier transformation. This provides spatially resolved NMR relaxation data that can be fitted or subjected to inverse Laplace transformation (not provided) to characterize relaxation at different positions within a sample.

Gis Data: 2016 Chesapeake Bay Sav Coverage, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science, Sav Data Administrator

Data

Abstract: The 2015 Chesapeake Bay SAV Coverage was mapped from digital multispectral imagery with a 25cm GSD to assess water quality in the Bay. Each area of SAV was interpreted from the rectified imagry and classified into one of four density classes by the percentage of cover. The SAV beds were entered into an SDE GIS fetaure class using the quality control procedures documented below. The dataset contains all SAV areas that were identified from the areas flown. Some areas that are presumed to contain no SAV were not flown. Some small beds, particularly along narrow tributaries may not have …

Assessment Of The High-Resolution Sediment Gravity Flow Record In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Elisabeth Rose Clyne Dec 2017

Assessment Of The High-Resolution Sediment Gravity Flow Record In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Elisabeth Rose Clyne

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

South-Central Alaska is one of the most seismically active and climatologically sensitive places in the world. Within this region, Prince William Sound (PWS) receives abundant sediment from multiple sources, potentially housing a high-resolution environmental record spanning the past 4,000 years. Inputs to PWS are derived from local rivers and glaciers, and may include earthquake- and glacial-outburst-triggered sediment gravity flows. Therefore, this is an ideal location to investigate the long-term record of seismic, glacial, and riverine activity. This study examines the elemental, grain size, and stable isotope signatures in PWS to identify gravity flow deposits and the potential paleoseismic and paleoclimate …

Fractal Floc Properties In The Surface Waters Of A Partially-Mixed Estuary: Insights From Video Settling, Lisst, And Pump Sampling, Kelsey Fall, Carl T. Friedrichs, Grace M. Massey, David Bowers

Presentations

This study focuses on observations collected along the York River Estuary, major tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, USA. Although microtidal in terms of tidal range, the partially-mixed York River Estuary experiences near-surface tidal currents of up to 1 m/s at spring tide (Friedrichs, 2009). Observations of particle properties were collected using a profiling system that includes a Laser InSitu Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST) 100X Type C instrument, a high-definition Particle Imaging Camera System (PICS) incorporating a video settling tube, and a high-speed pump sampler. At each sampling station, the profiler was lowered to a depth of 1-3m below the …

Biogenic pelletization plays an important roll in the packaging of fine sediments to prevent their availability in contributing to the water clarity issues in coastal systems. On the order of 1000 5µm equivalent spherical diameter clay flocculi primary particles can be packaged in a single elliptical-inshape pellet, 100µm long and 30µm wide. This is a size consistent of those observed in our study area in the Clay Bank Area of the York River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA. If resuspended, this one pellet will have almost 25 times less surface area and thus have that much less …

Exploiting Power For Smartphone Security And Privacy, Qing Yang

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Power consumption has become a key issue for smartphone security and privacy protection. In this dissertation, we propose to exploit power for smartphone security, as well as to optimize energy consumption for smartphone privacy. First, we show that public USB charging stations pose a significant privacy risk to smartphone users. We present a side-channel attack that allows a charging station to identify which webpages are loaded while the smartphone is charging. to evaluate this side-channel, we collected power traces of Alexa top 50 websites on multiple smartphones under several conditions, including: varied battery charging level, browser cache enabled/disabled, taps/no taps …

Superconducting Thin Films For The Enhancement Of Superconducting Radio Frequency Accelerator Cavities, Matthew Burton Nov 2017

Superconducting Thin Films For The Enhancement Of Superconducting Radio Frequency Accelerator Cavities, Matthew Burton

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Bulk niobium (Nb) superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities are currently the preferred method for acceleration of charged particles at accelerating facilities around the world. However, bulk Nb cavities have poor thermal conductance, impose material and design restrictions on other components of a particle accelerator, have low reproducibility and are approaching the fundamental material-dependent accelerating field limit of approximately 50MV/m. Since the SRF phenomena occurs at surfaces within a shallow depth of ~1 µm, a proposed solution to this problem has been to utilize thin film technology to deposit superconducting thin films on the interior of cavities to engineer the active …

Modeling The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation Using The Quantum Lattice Gas Method, Armen M. Oganesov Nov 2017

Modeling The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation Using The Quantum Lattice Gas Method, Armen M. Oganesov

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We present an improved Quantum Lattice Gas (QLG) algorithm as a mesoscopic unitary perturbative representation of the mean field Gross Pitaevskii (GP) equation for Bose–Einstein Condensates (BECs). The method employs an interleaved sequence of unitary collide and stream operators. QLG is applicable to many different scalar potentials in the weak interaction regime and has been used to model the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV), Burgers and GP equations. It can be implemented on both quantum and classical computers and is extremely scalable. We present results for 1D soliton solutions with positive and negative internal interactions, as well as vector solitons with inelastic …

Marsh Persistence Under Sea-Level Rise Is Controlled By Multiple, Geologically Variable Stressors, Molly Mitchell, Julie Herman, Donna M. Bilkovic, Carl Hershner Nov 2017

Marsh Persistence Under Sea-Level Rise Is Controlled By Multiple, Geologically Variable Stressors, Molly Mitchell, Julie Herman, Donna M. Bilkovic, Carl Hershner

VIMS Articles

Introduction: Marshes contribute to habitat and water quality in estuaries and coastal bays. Their importance to continued ecosystem functioning has led to concerns about their persistence.

Outcomes: Concurrent with sea-level rise, marshes are eroding and appear to be disappearing through ponding in their interior; in addition, in many places, they are being replaced with shoreline stabilization structures. We examined the changes in marsh extent over the past 40 years within a subestuary of Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States, to better understand the effects of sea-level rise and human pressure on marsh coverage.

Computational Methods Of Lattice Boltzmann Mhd, Christopher Robert Flint Nov 2017

Computational Methods Of Lattice Boltzmann Mhd, Christopher Robert Flint

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Lattice Boltzmann (LB) Methods are a somewhat novel approach to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. These methods simulate Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations on the mesoscopic (quasi-kinetic) scale by solving for a statistical distribution of particles rather than attempting to solve the nonlinear macroscopic equations directly. These LB methods allow for a highly parallelizable code since one replaces the difficult nonlinear convective derivatives of MHD by simple linear advection on a lattice. New developments in LB have significantly extended the numerical stability limits of its applicability. These developments include multiple relaxation times (MRT) in the collision operators, maximizing entropy to …

A Brief Guide To Striped Bass Ecology & Management In Chesapeake Bay, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Susanna Musick Nov 2017

A Brief Guide To Striped Bass Ecology & Management In Chesapeake Bay, Mary C. Fabrizio, Troy D. Tuckey, Susanna Musick

Reports

Chesapeake Bay striped bass support important recreational fisheries along the US Atlantic coast; in the late 1970s, the population of striped bass collapsed as a result of overfishing and poor water quality in rivers used for spawning and rear-ing of young. Informed by stock assessments, strict management regulations were enacted in the mid-1980s and early 1990s; these highly effective regulations resulted in the recovery of the population in 1995. A key to the successful recov-ery of the Atlantic coast striped bass was the wide range of ages of spawning females and the associated differences in spawning behavior among ages. Age …

Tetragonal Diiodotetrapyridinedicopper(I): Structure, Luminescence, And Computational Modeling, Andrew W. Kelly, Joseph V. Handy, Aaron D. Nicholas, Et Al., Robert D. Pike

Arts & Sciences Articles

We report on a new crystal modification of (CuIPy2) n (Py = pyridine), a compound first reported by White et al. In contrast to White’s orthorhombic structure, which is comprised of rhomboid iodide-bridged dimers, Cu2I2Py4, our new tetragonal crystal structure in space group P41212 is disordered and can be interpreted as either iodide-bridged dimers or helical chains. To determine the structure type, variable temperature X-ray diffraction and luminescence measurements were carried out. The photoluminescence spectrum shows a distinct cluster-centered transition at high excitation energies which is consistent with the dimer structure. DFT and TD-DFT calculations were performed to explain …

Tetraquark Operators In Lattice Qcd And Exotic Flavour States In The Charm Sector, Gavin K. C. Cheung, Christopher E. Thomas, Jozef J. Dudek, Robert G. Edwards

Arts & Sciences Articles

We present a general class of operators resembling compact tetraquarks which have a range of colour-flavour-spin structures, transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice and respect other relevant symmetries. These constructions are demonstrated in lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to m(pi) = 391 MeV. Using the distillation framework, correlation functions involving large bases of meson-meson and tetraquark operators are computed in the isospin-1 hidden-charm and doubly-charmed sectors, and finite-volume spectra are extracted with the variational method. We find the spectra are insensitive to the addition of tetraquark operators to the bases of meson-meson operators. For the first …

Light-Induced Photochemical Changes In Copper(I) Thiocyanate Complexes Decorated With Halopyridines: Optical Memory Manifestation, Aaron D. Nicholas, Brooke M. Otten, Gerardo Ayala, Et Al., Robert D. Pike

Arts & Sciences Articles

We report on the photoluminescence of {CuSCN(3-XPy)2}n crystals (X = Br, Cl; Py = pyridine). Laser excitation at 266 nm for CuSCN(3-BrPy)2 at 78 K results in a decrease in the luminescence intensity with increasing irradiation time. Heating the sample to 298 K and recooling to 78 K results in recovery of the original luminescence intensity, hence manifesting an optical memory effect. Laser irradiation at longer or shorter wavelengths fails to produce a reduction in emission intensity. Interestingly, CuSCN(3-ClPy)2, despite being isomorphic, does not undergo emission intensity changes regardless of laser irradiation wavelength variation. Density functional theory (DFT) and …
