Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Very recently, experimentally synthesized R3c phase LaCuO3 was studied by Zhang, Jiao, Kou, Liao & Du [J. Mater. Chem. C (2018), 6, 6132-6137], and they found that this material exhibits multiple Dirac cones in its non-spin-polarized electronic structure. Motivated by this study, the focus here is on a new R3c phase material, AgCuF3, which has a combination of multiple Dirac cones and 100% spin polarization properties. Compared to the non-spin-polarized system LaCuO3, the spin-polarized Dirac behavior in AgCuF3 is intrinsic. The effects of on-site Coulomb interaction, uniform strain and spin-orbit coupling were added to examine the stability of its multiple …

Preparation And Physical Properties Of A Cr3al Filmwith A Do3structure, Weiqi Zhao, Xuefang Dai, X M. Zhang, Z Mo, Xiaotian Wang, G F. Chen, Zhenxiang Cheng, Guodong Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A Cr3Al compound with a DO3 structure has previously been predicted to be nearly half metal and a promising spintronics material; however, its synthesis has not been reported. Here, a Cr3Al compound with a DO3 structure is successfully prepared in thin-film form by the magnetron sputtering method. It was found that the substrate temperature is crucial to the atomic ordering, thin-film density and lattice constant. The lattice constant varies with different substrate temperatures and is smaller than the theoretical equilibrium lattice constant. Theoretical investigations on the electronic structures and magnetic properties indicate that the Cr3Al compound with a DO3 structure …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Sulphur doping effects on the crystal structures, thermoelectric properties, density-of-states, and effective mass in Cu1.98SxSe1−x were studied based on the electrical and thermal transport property measurements, and first-principles calculations. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld refinements indicate that room temperature Cu1.98SxSe1−x (x=0, 0.02, 0.08, 0.16) and Cu1.98SxSe1−x (x=0.8, 0.9, 1.0) have the same crystal structure as monoclinic-Cu2Se and orthorhombic-Cu2S, respectively. Sulphur doping can greatly enhance zT values when x is in the range of 0.8≤x≤1.0. Furthermore, all doped samples show stable thermoelectric compatibility factors over a broad temperature range from 700 to 1000K, which could greatly benefit their practical applications. …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Synthesis, spectral and electrochemical properties of a series of new panchromatic BODIPY donor-acceptor-donor derivatives, comprising carbazole conjugated with systematically elongated framework by thiophene-based linkers were investigated. It has been found that elongation of the π-system with one thiophene unit shifts the spectra toward near infrared, while incorporation of next thiophene derivatives has only limited influence on the lowest energy transition, causing no further shift of absorption maxima. Elongation of π-conjugation of the donor arm tunes the electron properties, influencing the ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) values of the molecules. The experimental results are supported by quantum chemical computations …

By measuring the prototypical antiferromagnet α-Fe2O3, we show that it is possible to determine the static spin orientation and dynamic spin correlations within nanometers from an antiferromagnetic surface using the nuclear spin polarization of implanted 8Liþ ions detected with β-NMR. Remarkably, the firstorder Morin spin reorientation in single crystal α-Fe2O3 occurs at the same temperature at all depths between 1 and 100 nm from the (110) surface; however, the implanted nuclear spin experiences an increased 1=T1 relaxation rate at shallow depths revealing soft-surface magnons. The surface-localized dynamics decay towards the bulk with a characteristic length of ϵ ¼ 11 1 …

Improved Superconducting Properties In The Mg11b2 Low Activation Superconductor Prepared By Low-Temperature Sintering, Fang Cheng, Yongchang Liu, Zongqing Ma, M Shahriar Al Hossain, Mehmet Somer

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mg11B2 has a great application prospect in the superconducting coils for fusion reactor as the "low activation superconductors". The un-doped Mg11B2 and Cu-doped Mg11B2 bulks using 11B as a boron precursor were fabricated by low-temperature sintering in present work. It was found that the prepared Mg11B2 low activation superconductors exhibit better Jc performance than all of other Mg11B2 samples reported in previous studies. As for Cu doped Mg11B2, minor Cu addition can obviously improve the Mg11B2 grain crystallization and reduce the amount of MgO impurity. Hence, improved grain connectivity and higher Jc at low fields is obtained in Cu doped …

Ferroelectric And Magnetic Properties Of Aurivillius Bim+1ti3fem−3o3m+3 Thin Films, Tingting Jia, Hideo Kimura, Zhenxiang Cheng, Hongyang Zhao

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Aurivillius Bim+1Ti3Fem−3O3m+3 (m = 4, 5, 6) thin films have been deposited by a pulsed laser deposition system. The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate the formation of orthorhombic phase. The remanent polarization (2Pr) of Bim+1Ti3Fem−3O3m+3 thin films is decreased with the m-number. Positive-up-negative-down measurements indicate the presence of ferroelectric (FE) polarization in as-obtained thin films. Piezoresponse force microscopy investigations confirm the existence of FE domains and the switchable polarization. Weak magnetic moment is detected in the Aurivillius films at room temperature. The present work …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

BiOBr nanosheets with highly reactive {001} facets exposed were selectively synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The inner strain in the BiOBr nanosheets has been tuned continuously by the pH value. The photocatalytic performance of BiOBr in dye degradation can be manipulated by the strain effect. The low-strain BiOBr nanosheets show improved photocatalytic activity. Density functional calculations suggest that strain can modify the band structure and symmetry in BiOBr. The enhanced photocatalytic activity in low-strain BiOBr nanosheets is due to improved charge separation attributable to a highly dispersive band structure with an indirect band gap.

For practical application, the functional piezoelectric film in microelectromechanical systems should meet the requirement of physical properties, as well as the mechanical properties. In this article, 0.5Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (0.5BZT-0.5BCT) thin films with varied properties were prepared on (100) Si substrates via a sol-gel technique at different annealing temperatures. The effects of the annealing temperature on the morphology, piezoelectricity, hardness, and elastic modulus were studied. Particular attention was paid to the surface frictional behavior of films, and the changes in the friction force can be radically explained in terms of differences in the hardness/elastic modulus ratio and the residual stress of films. …

The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of polypyrrole (PPy) doped with the biological dopant dextran sulphate (DS) were shown to be significantly altered as a function of varying the salt concentration (0.2, 2 or 20 mg/ml) in the polymerisation electrolyte. Films grown in the presence of 0.2 mg/ml DS generated the highest potential during galvanostatic growth, with the potential decreasing with each subsequent increase in DS concentration. The electroactivity of the polymers was similar for all three DS concentrations, with the 20 mg/ml film drawing slightly more current upon reduction in PBS. Increasing the DS concentration reduced film interfacial roughness and …

Modeling Transport Properties Of Inhomogeneous Superconductor-Metal Composites, A Borroto, L Del Rio, M Arronte, Tom Johansen, E Altshuler

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We propose a model for a superconductor-metal composite that allows to derive intrinsic transport properties of the superconducting phase based on 2D images of its cross section, and a minimal set of parameters. The method is tested experimentally by using, as model composite, a "transversal bridge" made on a Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x (BSCCO)-Ag multi-filamentary tape. It is shown that the approach allows to predict the measured I−⟨E⟩ curves of the filaments. In addition, one can determine the critical current anisotropy between the longitudinal and transverse directions of the Ag-BSCCO tape, and also of …

Modulation Of The Properties Of Thin Ferromagnetic Films With An Externally Applied Electric Field In Ferromagnetic/Piezoelectric/Ferromagnetic Hybrids, D Stamopoulos, M Zeibekis, Shujun Zhang

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In many cases, technological advances are based on artificial low-dimensional structures of heterogeneous constituents, thus called hybrids, that when come together they provide stand-alone entities that exhibit entirely different properties. Such hybrids are nowadays intensively studied since they are attractive for both basic research and oncoming practical applications. Here, we studied hybrids constituted of piezoelectric (PE) and ferromagnetic (FM) components in the form FM/PE/FM, ultimately aiming to provide means for the controlled modulation of the properties of the FM electrodes, originating from the strain imposed to them by the PE mediator when an electric field is applied. The PE component …

Effect Of Sintering Temperature On The Superconducting Properties Of Graphene Doped Mgb2, K S B De Silva, X Xu, Sanjeev Gambhir, D C K Wong, W X Li, Q Y. Hu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A comprehensive study on the effects of sintering temperature on graphene-doped MgB2 superconductor was conducted. Graphene has emerged as an effective dopant that is capable of improving the critical current density (J-{\rm c}) and flux pinning at a very low doping level, with only a slight reduction of the critical temperature (T-{\rm c}). MgB2 undoped and graphene-doped bulk samples were prepared by the in situ method and sintered within a temperature range from 650 to 950 {\circ}\hbox{C}. It is surprising to note that at the doping level of 1 at.% the sample sintered at 850 {\circ}\hbox{C} shows a J\rm c …

The layered perovskite compound Sr2-xGdxCoO 4 has not yet been subjected to detailed study so far. In this report, structures, transport, magnetic properties, and first principle calculations will be reported for the two dimensional compounds Sr 2-xGdxCoO4 (x 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.25). Rietveld refinement revealed that these compounds are crystallized in K2NiF 4-type structures with space group I4/mmm. It was found that the lattice parameter c decreases as x increases. Through the Curies Weiss fitting of the temperature dependent magnetization, it was found that the Sr 1.25Gd0.75CoO4 sample exhibits a weak ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at about 62 K, with …
