Towards Agent-Based Traffic Simulation Using Live Data From Sensors For Smart Cities, Johan Barthelemy, Yan Qian, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The Smart City and Internet-of-Things revolutions enable the collection of various types of data in real-time through sensors. This data can be used to improve the decision tools and simulations used by city planners. This paper presents a new framework for real-time traffic simulation integrating an agent-based methodology with live CCTV and other sensor data while respecting the privacy regulations. The framework simulates traffic flows of pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles and their interactions. The approach has been applied in Liverpool (NSW, Australia) showing promising preliminary results and can easily ingest additional sensor data, e.g. air quality.

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The paper addresses and explains some of the key questions about the use of data mining in educational technology classroom research. Two examples of use of data mining techniques, namely, association rules mining and fuzzy representations are presented, from a study conducted in Europe and another in Australia. Both of these studies examine student learning, behaviors, and experiences within computer-supported classroom activities. In the first study, the technique of association rules mining was used to understand better how learners with different cognitive types interacted with a simulation to solve a problem. Association rules mining was found to be a useful …

Investigating The Accuracy Of Georeferenced Social Media Data For Flood Mapping: The Petajakarta.Org Case Study, Robert Ighodaro Ogie, Hugh I. Forehead

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Georeferenced social media data are gaining increased application in creating near real-time flood maps needed to improve situational awareness in data-starved regions. However, there is growing concern that the georeferenced locations of flood-related social media contents do not always correspond to the actual locations of the flooding event. But to what extent is this true? Without this knowledge, it is difficult to ascertain the accuracy of flood maps created using georeferenced social media contents. This study aims to improve understanding of the extent to which georeferenced locations of social media flood reports deviate from the actual locations of floods. The …

Modelling And Data Frameworks For Understanding Infrastructure Systems Throuh A Systems-Of-Systems Lens, Matthew J. Berryman, Rohan Wickramasuriya, Vu Lam Cao, Pascal Perez

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Modelling and analysis of large systems of infrastructure systems carries with it a number of challenges, in particular around the volume of data and the requisite complexity (and thus computing resources required) of models. In this paper we present an integrated land use–transportation model of a region in Sydney, and detail how we integrated an agent-based model of location and transport choice with a traffic micro-simulator. We also discuss both some novel architectures for scalability of modelling as well as for fusion and relevant visualisation of large data sets. We have a particular focus on geospatial infrastructure data visualisation.

Data-Driven Modeling And Analysis Of Household Travel Mode Choice, Nagesh Shukla, Jun Ma, Rohan Wickramasuriya Denagamage, Nam N. Huynh Jan 2013

Data-Driven Modeling And Analysis Of Household Travel Mode Choice, Nagesh Shukla, Jun Ma, Rohan Wickramasuriya Denagamage, Nam N. Huynh

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

One of the important problems studied in the area of travel behavior analysis is travel mode choice which is one of the four crucial steps in transportation demand estimation for urban planning. State of the art models in travel demand modelling can be classified as trip based; tour based; and activity based. In trip based approach, each individual trips is modelled as independent and isolated trips i.e. no connections between different trips. In tour based approach, trips that start and end from the same location (home, work, etc) and trips within a tour are dependent on each other. In past …

A Novel Approach To Data Deduplication Over The Engineering-Oriented Cloud Systems, Zhe Sun, Jun Shen, Jianming Young

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents a duplication-less storage system over the engineering-oriented cloud computing platforms. Our deduplication storage system, which manages data and duplication over the cloud system, consists of two major components, a front-end deduplication application and a mass storage system as back-end. Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS) is a common distribution file system on the cloud, which is used with Hadoop database (HBase). We use HDFS to build up a mass storage system and employ HBase to build up a fast indexing system. With a deduplication application, a scalable and parallel deduplicated cloud storage system can be effectively built up. …

Privacy Enhanced Data Outsourcing In The Cloud, Miao Zhou, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Jun Yan, Liju Dong Jan 2012

Privacy Enhanced Data Outsourcing In The Cloud, Miao Zhou, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Jun Yan, Liju Dong

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

How to secure outsourcing data in cloud computing is a challenging problem, since a cloud environment cannot been considered to be trusted. The situation becomes even more challenging when outsourced data sources in a cloud environment are managed by multiple outsourcers who hold different access rights. In this paper, we introduce an efficient and novel tree-based key management scheme that allows a data source to be accessed by multiple parties who hold different rights. We ensure that the database remains secure, while some selected data sources can be securely shared with other authorized parties.

Spatial Modelling Of Benthic Cover Using Remote Sensing Data In The Aldabra Lagoon, Western Indian Ocean, Sarah Hamylton, Tom Spencer, A Hagan

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Spatially explicit ecological modelling was used to predict the distribution of 4 benthic components (live coral, carbonate sand, macroalgae and dead coral) inside the Aldabra lagoon, southern Seychelles, western Indian Ocean. Both classic ordinary least-squares and spatial autoregression techniques were carried out on a field data set of 774 spatially referenced records and 3 satellite remote sensing images to define an empirical relationship between local environmental conditions (water depth and water level variation) and benthic cover. This relationship was then used to generate a synoptic model of the spatial cover and distribution of each benthic component at the landscape (i.e. …

A Comparison Of Spatially Explicit And Classic Regression Modelling Of Live Coral Cover Using Hyperspectral Remote-Sensing Data In The Al Wajh Lagoon, Red Sea, S Hamylton

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Live coral is a key component of the Al Wajh marine reserve in the Red Sea. The management of this reserve is dependent on a sound understanding of the existing spatial distribution of live coral cover and the environmental factors influencing live coral at the landscape scale. This study uses remote-sensing techniques to develop ordinary least squares and spatially lagged autoregressive explanatory models of the distribution of live coral cover inside the Al Wajh lagoon, Saudi Arabia. Live coral was modelled as a response to environmental controls such as water depth, the concentration of suspended sediment in the water column …

Here, we report preliminary estimates of the column averaged carbon dioxide (CO2) dry air mole fraction, XCO2, retrieved from spectra recorded over land by the Greenhouse gases Observing Satellite, GOSAT (nicknamed "Ibuki"), using retrieval methods originally developed for the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) mission. After screening for clouds and other known error sources, these retrievals reproduce much of the expected structure in the global XCO2 field, including its variation with latitude and season. However, low yields of retrieved XCO2 over persistently cloudy areas and ice covered surfaces at high latitudes limit the coverage of some geographic regions, even on …

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Distance and real-time data monitoring are the necessary condition that makes any system in good working order. Recent advancements in micro-electronics and wireless technology enable the application of wireless sensors in both industry and wild environments. However, Long-distance wireless communication has several drawbacks like limited bandwidth, considerable costs and unstable connection quality. Therefore, Power Line Communication (PLC) using pre-established Power Lines (PL) becomes more attractive for high data transmission technology. This paper reviews the existing distance data monitoring systems and presents a case study for data transferring of temperature and heart beat measurement. The simulations were carried out on the …

We report new short-wave infrared (SWIR) column retrievals of atmospheric methane (X CH4) from the Japanese Greenhouse Gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) and compare observed spatial and temporal variations with correlative ground-based measurements from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and with the global 3-D GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model. GOSAT X CH4 retrievals are compared with daily TCCON observations at six sites between April 2009 and July 2010 (Bialystok, Park Falls, Lamont, Orleans, Darwin and Wollongong). GOSAT reproduces the site-dependent seasonal cycles as observed by TCCON with correlations typically between 0.5 and 0.7 with an estimated single-sounding precision between 0.4-0.8%. …

Rocky Intertidal Temperature Variability Along The Southeast Coast Of Australia: Comparing Data From In Situ Loggers, Satellite-Derived Sst And Terrestrial Weather Stations, Justin Adam Lathlean, David J. Ayre Prof, Todd E. Minchinton Jan 2011

Rocky Intertidal Temperature Variability Along The Southeast Coast Of Australia: Comparing Data From In Situ Loggers, Satellite-Derived Sst And Terrestrial Weather Stations, Justin Adam Lathlean, David J. Ayre Prof, Todd E. Minchinton

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Predicting how both spatial and temporal variation in sea and air temperature influence the distribution of intertidal organisms is a pressing issue. We used data from satellites, weather stations and in situ loggers to test the hypothesis that satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and weather station air temperatures provide accurate estimates of ambient temperature variability on rocky intertidal shores for temporal (hourly for 1 yr) and spatial (10 m to 400 km) variation along the southeast coast of Australia. We also tested whether satellites and weather stations accurately detect the duration, frequency and number of extreme temperature events. Daily mean …

The European Court Of Human Rights Ruling Against The Policy Of Keeping Fingerprints And Dna Samples Of Criminal Suspects In Britain, Wales And Northern Ireland: The Case Of S. And Marper V United Kingdom, Katina Michael Dec 2010

The European Court Of Human Rights Ruling Against The Policy Of Keeping Fingerprints And Dna Samples Of Criminal Suspects In Britain, Wales And Northern Ireland: The Case Of S. And Marper V United Kingdom, Katina Michael

Associate Professor Katina Michael

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (the PACE) contained powers for the taking of fingerprints, and samples in the form of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In 2001, Section 64(1A) of the PACE was substituted with Section 82 of the Criminal Justice and Police Act. The change to legislation meant that a suspect of a crime would have their fingerprints and samples permanently stored on the police national computer (PNC) even after having been acquitted. This paper critically analyses the circumstances of the landmark case of S. AND MARPER V. THE UNITED KINGDOM in two …

Fixed Rank Filtering For Spatio-Temporal Data, Noel Cressie, Tao Shi, Emily L. Kang Jan 2010

Fixed Rank Filtering For Spatio-Temporal Data, Noel Cressie, Tao Shi, Emily L. Kang

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Datasets from remote-sensing platforms and sensor networks are often spatial, temporal, and very large. Processing massive amounts of data to provide current estimates of the (hidden) state from current and past data is challenging, even for the Kalman filter. A large number of spatial locations observed through time can quickly lead to an overwhelmingly high-dimensional statistical model. Dimension reduction without sacrificing complexity is our goal in this article. We demonstrate how a Spatio-Temporal Random Effects (STRE) component of a statistical model reduces the problem to one of fixed dimension with a very fast statistical solution, a methodology we call Fixed …

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) produces precise measurements of the column average dry-air mole fractions of CO2, CO, CH4, N2O and H2O at a variety of sites worldwide. These observations rely on spectroscopic parameters that are not known with sufficient accuracy to compute total columns that can be used in combination with in situ measurements. The TCCON must therefore be calibrated to World Meteorological Orga-nization (WMO) in situ trace gas measurement scales. We present a calibration of TCCON data using WMO-scale instrumentation aboard aircraft that measured profiles over four TCCON stations during 2008 and 2009. These calibrations are …

Estimating Shared Copy Number Aberrations For Array Cgh Data: The Linear-Median Method, Yan-Xia Lin, Veera Baladandayuthapani, V Bonato, K.-A. Do

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Motivation: Existing methods for estimating copy number variations in array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) data are limited to estimations of the gain/loss of chromosome regions for single sample analysis. We propose the linear-median method for estimating shared copy numbers in DNA sequences across multiple samples, demonstrate its operating characteristics through simulations and applications to real cancer data, and compare it to two existing methods.

Results: Our proposed linear-median method has the power to estimate common changes that appear at isolated single probe positions or very short regions. Such changes are hard to detect by current methods. This new …

Explicit Connections Between Longitudinal Data Analysis And Kernel Machines, N D. Pearce, M. P. Wand

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Two areas of research - longitudinal data analysis and kernel machines - have large, but mostly distinct, literatures. This article shows explicitly that both fields have much in common with each other. In particular, many popular longitudinal data fitting procedures are special types of kernel machines. These connections have the potential to provide fruitful cross-fertilization between longitudinal data analytic and kernel machine methodology.

A method based on the successful AutoClass (Cheeseman & Stutz, 1996) and the Snob research programs (Wallace & Dowe, 1994); (Baxter & Wallace, 1996) has been chosen for our research work on harmonic classification. The method utilizes mixture models (McLachlan, 1992) as a representation of the formulated clusters. This research is principally based on the formation of such mixture models (typically based on Gaussian distributions) through a Minimum Message Length (MML) encoding scheme (Wallace & Boulton, 1968). During the formation of such mixture models the various derivative tools (algorithms) allow for the automated selection of the number of clusters and …

Inverse modeling of CO2 satellite observations to better quantify carbon surface fluxes requires a chemical transport model (CTM) to relate the fluxes to the observed column concentrations. CTM transport error is a major source of uncertainty. We show that its effect can be reduced by using CO satellite observations as additional constraint in a joint CO2-CO inversion. CO is measured from space with high precision, is strongly correlated with CO2, and is more sensitive than CO2 to CTM transport errors on synoptic and smaller scales. Exploiting this constraint requires statistics for the CTM transport error correlation between CO2 and CO, …

Evaluation of climate model simulations using observed data contributes to the assessment of confidence in model predictions of future climate change. The mid-Holocene represents an opportunity to evaluate model simulations of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in comparison with coral proxy evidence of reduced ENSO amplitude. Quantitative comparisons between coral records and model output have been limited by (1) the use of different measures of ENSO amplitude, (2) possible sampling of natural variability in short records, and (3) uncertainty about the stationarity of the relationship between central Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) variability and ENSO signals at the coral site. We …
