We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in p↑+p collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of 5 standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities η>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the ρ meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions.

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, Ay, in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3He↑(e,e′ ) on a 3He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero Ay can arise from the interference between the one- and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon. An experiment recently completed at Jefferson Lab yielded asymmetries with high statistical precision at Q2=0.13, 0.46, and …

Spin Nematics, Valence-Bond Solids, And Spin Liquids In So(N) Quantum Spin Models On The Triangular Lattice, Ribhu K. Kaul
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We introduce a simple model of SO(N) spins with two-site interactions which is amenable to quantum Monte Carlo studies without a sign problem on nonbipartite lattices. We present numerical results for this model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice where we find evidence for a spin nematic at small N, a valence-bond solid at large N, and a quantum spin liquid at intermediate N. By the introduction of a sign-free four-site interaction, we uncover a rich phase diagram with evidence for both first-order and exotic continuous phase transitions.

Rényi Entanglement Entropy Of Critical Su(N) Spin Chains, Jonathan D'Emidio, Matthew S. Block, Ribhu K. Kaul
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present a study of the scaling behavior of the Rényi entanglement entropy (REE) in SU(N) spin chain Hamiltonians, in which all of the spins transform under the fundamental representation. These SU(N) spin chains are known to be quantum critical and described by a well known Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) nonlinear sigma model in the continuum limit. Numerical results from our lattice Hamiltonian are obtained using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo for both closed and open boundary conditions. As expected for this 1D critical system, the REE shows a logarithmic dependence on the subsystem size with a …
Phenomenology Of N-N̄ Oscillations Revisited, Susan Gardner, Ehsan Jafari
Phenomenology Of N-N̄ Oscillations Revisited, Susan Gardner, Ehsan Jafari
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We revisit the phenomenology of n−n̄ oscillations in the presence of external magnetic fields, highlighting the role of spin. We show, contrary to long-held belief, that the n−n̄ transition rate need not be suppressed, opening new opportunities for its empirical study.
