Jurassic Eolian Oolite On A Paleohigh In The Sundance Sea, Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, Zoran Kilibarda, David Loope

David B. Loope

Aeolian limestones are widespread in the Quaternary record and have been identified in outcrops and cores of late Palaeozoic strata. These rocks have been interpreted as a low latitude signal of glacio-eustatic sea level fluctuations and have not been previously reported from the Mesozoic or from other episodes of earth history generally believed to have been non-glacial. Numerous lenticular bodies of cross-stratified oolite lie near the contact between the lower and upper members of the mudstone-dominated lower Sundance Formation (Middle and Upper Jurassic) in the Bighorn Basin of north-central Wyoming, USA. The lenses, up to 12 m thick, contain sedimentary …

Christopher Spilling

The crystal structure of the racemic title compound, C18H20NO6P, m.p. 428-431 K, has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The title compound consists of a tetrahedral P atom bonded to two methoxy groups, and an alkyl chain. The alkyl chain was substituted at position 1 with a carbamate and with an epoxide at positions 2 and 3. The relative configuration of the 1-carbamate and 2,3-epoxide substituents was confirmed as anti (1S,2R,3S). The crystal structure contains an enantiomeric pair with two intermolecular hydrogen bonds in a 14-membered ring. The hydrogen bonds are formed between the P=O of one enantiomer and the N-H …

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell Nov 1997

Combining Multi-Attribute Utility And Geographic Information For Boundary Decisions: An Application To Park Planning, Jeffrey Keisler, Ronald Sundell

Jeffrey Keisler

The quality and value of an area depend primarily on what is found within
its designated boundaries. To determine the value of such areas in terms of boundaries,
we have developed a methodology for integrating multi-attribute utility functions with
spatial analysis so that desirable, or appropriate, boundaries can be determined on the
basis of the goals and objectives for the park. The key to successful evaluation is the
development of measures for what decision makers value, rather than merely using
what is easily measured. In a detailed example for planning of national parks, the
fundamental objectives are conservation and societal …

Photolithographic Patterning Of Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light Emitting Devices, Peifang Tian, P. E. Burrows, S. E. Forrest Nov 1997

Photolithographic Patterning Of Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light Emitting Devices, Peifang Tian, P. E. Burrows, S. E. Forrest

Peifang Tian

We demonstrate a photolithographic technique to fabricate vacuum-deposited organic light emitting devices. Photoresist liftoff combined with vertical deposition of the emissive organic materials and the metal cathode, followed by oblique deposition of a metal cap, avoids the use of high processing temperatures and the exposure of the organic materials to chemical degradation. The unpackaged devices show no sign of deterioration in room ambient when compared with conventional devices fabricated using low-resolution, shadow mask patterning. Furthermore, the devices are resistant to rapid degradation when operated in air for extended periods. This work illustrates a potential foundation for the volume production of …

A Vegetation Based Approach To Biodiversity Gap Analysis In The Agastyamalai Region, Western Ghats, India, B. R. Ramesh, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit S. Bawa

Shaily Menon

Protected areas in India have historically been established on an ad hoc basis with little attention to the conservation value of an area. This study focuses on a set of protected areas in the Agastyamalai region of the Western Ghats (WG), India. We examine forest loss and land-use changes in the study area from the early 1900s to 1960 and from 1960 to 1990. We use GIS to perform a biodiversity gap analysis of the protected areas in the study site. We produce a detailed map of existing floristic types and use it to generate layers corresponding to floristic species …

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden Aug 1997

Green And Ampt Infiltration With Redistribution, Fred L. Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

Distributed, physically based watershed and irrigation advance models require robust infiltration estimation capabilities. The empirical Green and Ampt (GA) equation of infiltration is a popular method for estimating infiltration. The GA parameters have physical basis and considerable prior research has focused on relating these parameters to soil textural classification. However, the original GA method is limited in that it is applicable only for a single ponding period. An explicit Green and Ampt redistribution (GAR) technique is developed herein to estimate interstorm redistribution of soil water and allow multiple ponding simulations using the GA methodology. Soil water redistribution during interponding periods …

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes I. Theoretical Results For Integrated Line Profiles., R. Ignace, K. H. Nordsieck, J. P. Cassinelli Aug 1997

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes I. Theoretical Results For Integrated Line Profiles., R. Ignace, K. H. Nordsieck, J. P. Cassinelli

Richard Ignace

The Hanle effect concerns the modification of polarized resonance-line scattering by magnetic fields; thus, it can be used as a diagnostic of stellar magnetic fields. The Hanle effect has been used to determine the field strength and distribution of magnetic structures present in prominences of the Sun. To investigate its potential use in stellar astronomy, the simplified case of an optically thin axisymmetric ring illuminated by a stellar point source is considered. The results are then used to derive the polarization from polar plumes, equatorial disks, and spherical shells. The integrated line polarization is calculated for axisymmetric rings with a …

Inference Of Steady Stellar Wind V(R) Laws From Optically Thin Emission Lines I. Idealised Analysis For The Profile Of A Single Line., J. C. Brown, L. L. Richardson, J. P. Cassinelli, R. Ignace

Richard Ignace

Abstract The form of the profile Flambda_0__({DELTA}λ) of an emission line from a steady spherical wind of velocity profile v(r) is derived for the case when optical depths are small, when stellar occultation of the wind is neglected, and when v(r) is highly supersonic. It is shown how the resulting integral equation for v(r), given Flambda_0__ ({DELTA}λ), can be inverted to yield v(r) if the line emissivity function j(r) is known. Solutions are demonstrated for simulated data in the case of a recombination line (j{prop.to}n^2^) for various trial forms of v(r). The solution is unique provided dv/dr does not change …

Cloning And Conservation Of Biological Diversity: Paradox, Panacea, Or Pandora's Box?, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit Bawa, Leah Gorman Jul 1997

Cloning And Conservation Of Biological Diversity: Paradox, Panacea, Or Pandora's Box?, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit Bawa, Leah Gorman

Shaily Menon

The success of a Scottish team in cloning a mammal from an adult tissue cell has generated considerable speculation in the popular press about potential applications to conservation biology. Possibilities that have been mentioned include cloning endangered species and creating gene banks for the germplasm of rare species. Sensational or inaccurate reports might encourage the mistaken notion that cloning technology is more advanced or reliable than it actually is. More important, such reports might foster the myth that there is no longer an urgency to conserve endangered species or their habitats as long as we have frozen germplasm and cloning …

Conjugate Schema In Genetic Search, Sanza Kazadi Jul 1997

Conjugate Schema In Genetic Search, Sanza Kazadi

Sanza Kazadi

Functional optimization is profoundly affected by the use of specific encodings. In one encoding, a particular problem may be simple to undertake, while in another encoding, the problem may be intractible. Genetic algorithms solve optimization problems by making use of schema. By locating schema in a solution vector, the paradigm can settle on a solution that makes use of several schema and combines them via crossover.

We propose a generalization of this idea, conjugate schema. Conjugate schema are disjoint subsets of the basis over which the fitness function can be written as a sum of smaller dimensional functions. We find …

Applications Of Geographic Information Systems, Remote-Sensing, And A Landscape Ecology Approach To Biodiversity Conservation In The Western Ghats, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit S. Bawa Jun 1997

Applications Of Geographic Information Systems, Remote-Sensing, And A Landscape Ecology Approach To Biodiversity Conservation In The Western Ghats, Shaily Menon, Kamaljit S. Bawa

Shaily Menon

The mountains along the west coast of peninsular India, the Western Ghats, constitute one of the unique biological regions of the world. Rapidly occurring land-cover and land-use change in the Western Ghats has serious implications for the biodiversity of the region. Both landscape changes as well as the distribution of biodiversity are phenomena with strong spatial correlates. Recent developments in remote-sensing technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow the use of a landscape ecology and spatial analysis approach to the problem of deforestation and biodiversity conservation in the Western Ghats. Applications of this approach include analyses of land-cover and land-use …

Features Of The Photon Statistics Of Two Coupled Electromagnetic Field Modes Under The Conditions Of Strong Mode Coupling, Mikhail E. Veisman, Serguei Y. Kalmykov Jun 1997

Features Of The Photon Statistics Of Two Coupled Electromagnetic Field Modes Under The Conditions Of Strong Mode Coupling, Mikhail E. Veisman, Serguei Y. Kalmykov

Serge Youri Kalmykov

The probabilities of transitions between the Fock states of two electromagnetic field modes under the influence of coupling between modes of finite duration are investigated. It is shown that the transition probability is a strongly oscillating function of the mode numbers of the photons. Under conditions in which the coupling frequency exceeds the geometric mean of the mode frequencies (strong coupling), large numbers of photons are excited in the mode with the lower frequency. The excitation of a two-dimensional radiation field oscillator and the ‘‘red’’ symmetry of the transition probabilities can be attributed to instability of the classical two-dimensional oscillator …

A Surface-Emitting Vacuum-Deposited Organic Light Emitting Device, V. Bulovic, Peifang Tian, P. E. Burrows, M. R. Gokhale, S. R. Forrest, M. E. Thompson

Peifang Tian

We demonstrate a vacuum-deposited organic light emitting device which emits from its top surface through a transparent indium-tin-oxide anode. This device employs a novel protective cap layer which prevents damage to the organic layers during sputter deposition of the anode, while also improving hole injection. Mechanisms of current transport and carrier injection from the contacts are investigated. This device configuration allows for integration of organic light emitting devices with n-channel field effect transistors used in display active matrix backplanes.
