Reconstruction And Future Trends Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer
Reconstruction And Future Trends Of The Aids Epidemic In The United States, Ron Brookmeyer
Ron Brookmeyer
There has been considerable uncertainty in estimates of past and current human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection rates in the United States. Statistical estimates of historical infection rates can be obtained from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) incidence data and the incubation period. However, this approach is subject to a number of sources of uncertainty and two other approaches, epidemic models of HIV transmission and surveys of HIV prevalence, are used to corroborate and refine the statistical estimates. Analyses suggest the HIV infection rate in the United States grew rapidly in the early 1980s, peaked in the mid-1980s, and subsequently declined markedly. …

The Influence Of Cation Size Upon The Infrared Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed On Platinum Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Jimin Huang
Mark R. Anderson
The infrared spectrum of carbon monoxide adsorbed on polycrystalline platinum electrodes in the presence of acetonitrile solutions is examined. Acetonitrile solutions provide a wide double layer region (approximately 4 V) in which to investigate the observed potential dependence of the infrared peak position. The wider window allows for better comparisons of experimental data with theoretical predictions than those which are available from measurements conducted in aqueous solutions. It is found that (i) near-monolayer surface coverage can be obtained from solutions saturated with CO, (ii) the coverage stays constant over roughly the entire double layer region, (iii) the CO adsorbs to …

A Collaborative Summer Research Program For Community College Students, Chris Craney, Franklin Dehaan
Chris L. Craney
While the benefits of undergraduate research are well established, little attention has been paid toward involving community college students in such research. This paper describes a five-year-experience with a summer research program that includes Los Angeles area community college students working side-by-side with Occidental College students and faculty.

Interpretation Issues In Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham, Richard Colton, Hubert Pollock
Interpretation Issues In Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham, Richard Colton, Hubert Pollock
Nancy A. Burnham
In this paper, we will discuss force microscopy (FM) and its potential for determining mechanical properties of thin films. We will introduce the basic principles of FM, and demonstrate how FM can be used to determine materials properties as well as image surface topography, both with nanonewton or sub‐nanonewton force resolution and sub‐nanometer position resolution. As FM is still a new field, not all of the questions concerning interpretation have been fully answered. We will elucidate four current issues that must be resolved before the full potential of FM can be realized. They are: (1) the role of water vapor …
Setting Time Effects On Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals, Fred L. Ogden
Setting Time Effects On Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals, Fred L. Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Shear strength tests are conducted in a model of a water well on four, commercially available, granular bentonite well sealing products. The time dependency of annulus seal shear strength and resistance to piping is examined. Dry bentonite samples are placed through water in the annular space between the casing and borehole and allowed to set for a specified time. Pressure is applied at a constant rate to one end of the clay seal until shear or piping failure occurs. Pressure and seal displacement data are recorded on a digital data acquisition system. Annulus seal strength and resistance to piping increase …

Observability Of The Anapole Moment And Neutrino Charge Radius, Mj Musolf, Br Holstein
Observability Of The Anapole Moment And Neutrino Charge Radius, Mj Musolf, Br Holstein
Barry R Holstein
The properties of the neutrino charge radius (NCR) and anapole moments (AM's) of elementary fermions, nucleons, and nuclei are discussed. The dependence of these off-shell electromagnetic couplings on the weak gauge parameter is explicitly demonstrated by a calculation performed in the Rξ gauge. The gauge dependence of the AM's and NCR implies that they cannot be observed in isolation from other second-order, electroweak effects. It is shown, however, that the AM's of various hadronic systems having an SU(2)L quantum number TL3=0 can be considered ``observables'' in certain formal, though unphysical, limits. It is argued that, apart from these special limits, …

Sniftirs Study Of The Behavior Of The Spectrum Of Carbon Monoxide Adsorbed On A Platinum Electrode In Alcoholic Solvents, Andrea Russell, Daniel Blackwood, Mark Anderson, Stanley Pons
Mark R. Anderson
The vibrational spectrum of carbon monoxide as a function of coverage in various alcoholic solvents was investigated using the SNIFTIRS technique. At low coverage the potential dependence of the band position was found to be linearly dependent on the inverse of the bulk dielectric constant of the solvent. An electrostatic model was developed to represent the interaction between adjacent adsorbate molecules. This model provides evidence in support of an island formation mechanism.

Higgs Boson Production In Peripheral Heavy-Ion Collisions: Coherent Double-Pomeron Exchange, Alec Schramm, Berndt Muller
Alec J Schramm
Higgs boson production by coherent double-pomeron exchange in peripheral nuclear collisions at energies of several TeV per nucleon is calculated. It is shown that a trigger on quasi-elastic nuclear collisions strongly suppresses the cross section. The analogous two-photon process is predicted to dominate for collisions of heavy nuclei.
