Provenance Study Of Late Eocene Arkosic Sandstones In Southwest And Central Washington, Mark Edward Byrnes

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to compare the sandstone composition and trace element geochemistry between samples representing the Summit Creek sandstone, Naches, Chumstick, and Carbonado Formations in order to determine if these sediments were all derived from the same provenance, and to determine the composition of the source rocks in hopes to identify the present day location of the source areas.

Preliminary Investigation For Underground Storage Of Pipeline Gas In The Bruer And Flora Pools, Mist Gas Field, Columbia County, Oregon, Paul Joseph Townley Jan 1985

Preliminary Investigation For Underground Storage Of Pipeline Gas In The Bruer And Flora Pools, Mist Gas Field, Columbia County, Oregon, Paul Joseph Townley

Dissertations and Theses

Northwest Natural Gas Canpany has proposed to convert the Bruer and Flora pools of the Mist Gas Field in west-central Columbia County, Northwestern Oregon, to pipeline gas storage reservoirs. Conversion to underground storage of pipeline gas in these depleted gas reservoirs would be the first in the Pacific Northwest. The Bruer and Flora Pools are fault trapped within the Cowlitz Formation. The shales overlying the Cowlitz Formation create a local seal for these gas reservoirs. X-ray diffraction and density log measurements suggest that the clay in these shales is primarily composed of smectite, which provides an excellent caprock seal.

Geochemistry Of Alteration And Mineralization Of The Wind River Gold Prospect, Skamania County, Washington, Krista I. Mcgowan Jan 1985

Geochemistry Of Alteration And Mineralization Of The Wind River Gold Prospect, Skamania County, Washington, Krista I. Mcgowan

Dissertations and Theses

The Wind River gold prospect is located in TSN, R7E of Skamania County, Washington, and is an epithermal gold-quartz vein system hosted in volcanic rocks of the Ohanapecosh Formation, a late Eocene to middle Oligocene unit of calcalkaline chemical composition. Andesitic pyroclastic rocks of the Ohanapecosh Formation are the host of mineralization in the study area, and form the lowest of several stratigraphic subunits. These pyroclastic rocks are overlain by two sequences of lava flows which cap the ridges and are folded by an anticlinal warp over the length of Paradise Ridge, plunging gently to the southeast. Toward the west, …

Geology And Geochemistry Of Hydrothermal Alteration, Eastern Portion Of The North Santiam Mining Area, J. Michael Pollock Jan 1985

Geology And Geochemistry Of Hydrothermal Alteration, Eastern Portion Of The North Santiam Mining Area, J. Michael Pollock

Dissertations and Theses

The Ruth Mine is a base-metal vein deposit near the eastern margin of a reported porphyry copper deposit in the Western Cascade Range in Oregon. Uplift of the Western Cascade Range has resulted in a deeply dissected terrain in which more than a kilometer of the stratigraphy overlying the porphyry-style mineralization is preserved and exposed. The stratigraphic units, which are middle Tertiary in age, have been given arbitrary letter designations beginning with the lowest unit (Unit A) through the uppermost unit (Unit D).

Structure And Evolution Of The Horse Heaven Hills In South-Central Washington, Michael Curtis Hagood Jan 1985

Structure And Evolution Of The Horse Heaven Hills In South-Central Washington, Michael Curtis Hagood

Dissertations and Theses

The Horse Heaven Hills uplift in south-central Washington consists of distinct northwest and northeast trends which merge in the lower Yakima Valley. The northwest trend is adjacent to and parallels the Rattlesnake-Wallula alignment (RAW; a part of the Olympic-Wallowa lineament). The northwest trend and northeast trend consist of aligned or en echelon anticlines and monoclines whose axes are generally oriented in the direction of the trend. At the intersection, folds in the northeast trend plunge onto and are terminated by folds of the northwest trend.

Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regime Of Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon, William Vandewater Clement Jul 1984

Effects Of Urbanization On The Hydrologic Regime Of Johnson Creek, Portland, Oregon, William Vandewater Clement

Dissertations and Theses

The Johnson Creek watershed, Portland, Oregon, has undergone urbanization at an increasing rate. Excessive flooding has occurred in the lower portions of the watershed, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million dollars worth of flood losses annually. In attempts to mitigate the flooding damages millions of dollars have been spent to channelize the creek, and over 200 thousand dollars has been spent during the last 20 years on preliminary feasibility studies alone.

The author saw a need to verify that there has been a change in the rainfall-runoff relationships in the upper Johnson Creek basin since 1941 and to quantify this …

Alternating Current Studies And Kinetic Analysis Of Valinomycin Mediated Charge-Transport Through Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Kenneth Lee Cox Jun 1984

Alternating Current Studies And Kinetic Analysis Of Valinomycin Mediated Charge-Transport Through Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Kenneth Lee Cox

Dissertations and Theses

In this study we have investigated the frequency dependence of bilayer lipid membranes for a series of glycerylmonoolein/n-decane bilayers in various aqueous ionic solutions containing the ionophore valinomycin. Reliable values of membrane capacitance and conductance were obtained over the frequency range 0.2 - 200 KHz using an automatic balancing bridge under the control of a microprocessor unit. The admittance data was then normalized and curve-fitted to produce relaxation times and amplitudes from which the kinetic rate parameters, as deduced from a single slab dielectric membrane model, were calculated. These ac experimental rate constants were then compared with those obtained from …

General Formula For The Inelastic Scattering Of Relativistic Spin-½ Particles By Heavy Atoms, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, S. A. Long Jun 1984

General Formula For The Inelastic Scattering Of Relativistic Spin-½ Particles By Heavy Atoms, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi, S. A. Long

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A general differential-cross-section formula for the inelastic scattering of relativistic spin-½ particles by heavy atoms is derived in the Born approximation and the structure and polarization of the incident particle is incorporated. The results reduce to those of Fano (1963) and of Turner et al. (1973) in well-known limiting cases.

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi Jun 1984

Energy Losses Of Solar Neutrinos And The Oscillation Hypothesis, P.T. Leung, S. Boedo, M. L. Rustgi

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A formula for the stopping power of neutrinos interacting via the standard weak-interaction model, but incorporating the possibility of neutrino oscillations among the three flavors, is derived. The results are applied to study the solar-neutrino anomaly and it is found that the anomaly cannot be accounted for by many orders of magnitude from consideration of the energy losses of the neutrinos interacting with the solar matter, even if the oscillation hypothesis is found to be valid.

Derivatives Of Trifluorovinylsulfur Pentafluoride And F-(Tert-Butyl) Hypochlorite, Jo Ann Marie Canich May 1984

Derivatives Of Trifluorovinylsulfur Pentafluoride And F-(Tert-Butyl) Hypochlorite, Jo Ann Marie Canich

Dissertations and Theses

Trifluorovinylsulfur pentafluoride dimerizes to (SF5CFCF2)2 in the presence of cesium fluoride. Two derivatives of trifluorovinylsulfur pentafluoride, SF5CF(CF3)C(O)F and SF5CF(CF3)C(O)NH2, were used to prepare the new compounds, SF5CF(CF3)CO2H and SF5CF(CF3)CN, respectively. The first was prepared by reacting the SF5-acid fluoride with water, while the second involved the abstraction of water from the SF5-amide using P4O10. The attempted preparation of a bis-pentafluorosulfur ketone and a pentafluorosulfur containing acid anhydride …

Geology, Alteration And Mineralization Of A Silicic Volcanic Center, Glass Buttes, Oregon, Michael James Johnson May 1984

Geology, Alteration And Mineralization Of A Silicic Volcanic Center, Glass Buttes, Oregon, Michael James Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Glass Buttes, a Pliocene silicic volcanic complex within the High Lava Plains province of Oregon, was erupted approximately 5.0 to 5.8 million years ago. Geologic mapping revealed that the eastern portion of the complex is underlain by rhyolitic glass domes, flows and rare pyroclastis flows. Basalt flows are interlayered with and onlap the silicic glass. Younger basalt flows, erupted from local vents, overlie silicic glass and onlapping basalts.

The eastern end of Glass Buttes is hydrothermally altered at the surface; a weak geothermal anomaly coincides with the altered areas. Alteration, localized by northwest trending normal faults, occurs primarily as opalite …

Coexistence And Spinodal Curves In Directionally Bonded Liquids Using The Four-Cluster Approximation, Erik Bodegom, Paul H. Meijer Feb 1984

Coexistence And Spinodal Curves In Directionally Bonded Liquids Using The Four-Cluster Approximation, Erik Bodegom, Paul H. Meijer

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We derive the phase diagrams and spinodals of binary liquid systems with anisotropic interactions, such as hydrogen-bonded molecules. The work is based on the four-particle cluster variation method, using a different potential for different contact points. It is shown that the introduction of a cluster larger than previously used by Barker and Fock, leads to a considerable improvement in the shape of the phase diagram and avoids some of the difficulties encountered in their calculation. Phase diagrams are displayed for various choices of the parameters: the number of contact points, the interaction potential, and the order of the approximation.

The Effect Of Viscosity On Impact Cratering And Possible Application To The Icy Satellites Of Saturn And Jupiter, Jonathan H. Fink, Donald Gault, Ronald Greeley Jan 1984

The Effect Of Viscosity On Impact Cratering And Possible Application To The Icy Satellites Of Saturn And Jupiter, Jonathan H. Fink, Donald Gault, Ronald Greeley

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Impact experiments in Newtonian fluids with a range of viscosities of 10-3 to 60 Pa s demonstrate that transient prater volume and shape (depth-to-diameter: ratio) depend on target viscosity as well as on gravity. Volume is reduced, and depth-to-diameter ratio is increased for cratering events in which viscosity plays a dominant role. In addition to being affected by target kinematic viscosity, viscous scaling is most strongly influenced by projectile diameter, less strongly by projectile velocity, and least strongly by gravity. In a Planetary context, viscols effects can occur for craters formed by small or slow moving impacting bodies, low …

Tiltmeter Analysis Of Mount St. Helens, Skamania County, Washington, Edward Charles Brown Jan 1984

Tiltmeter Analysis Of Mount St. Helens, Skamania County, Washington, Edward Charles Brown

Dissertations and Theses

Mount St. Helens returned to an active eruptive state March 20, 1980. Since then explosive and dome building eruptions have caused major topographic changes to the mountain and surrounding drainages. Monitoring of the southern side of the mountain by six tiltmeters at distances between 6 km and 12 km was conducted during the period of July 1, 1980 to December 31, 1980. Records obtained from the tiltmeters were analyzed and compared to data from precision geodetic surveys.

Igneous Dikes At Long Valley, Ca: Emplacement Mechanisms And Associated Geologic Structures, David D. Pollard, Jonathan H. Fink, Paul T. Delaney Jan 1984

Igneous Dikes At Long Valley, Ca: Emplacement Mechanisms And Associated Geologic Structures, David D. Pollard, Jonathan H. Fink, Paul T. Delaney

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two hypotheses for dike emplacement are: (1) magma flows into and dilates pre-existing fractures; or (2) magma flows into and dilates self-generated fractures. In the first case dikes should be parallel to an element of the rock fabric; in the second, they should be perpendicular to the least compressive stress. The two hypotheses suggest different dike intrusion and fissure eruption mechanisms and therefore different strategies for monitoring igneous events at Long Valley. We derive a method to distinguish the two mechanisms, a priori, from in-situ stress measurements and estimates of magma pressure. Estimates of relative dilation and slip across a …

Measurement Of Low Vapor Pressures : A Kinetic Approach, Samuel Bernard Bliden Jan 1984

Measurement Of Low Vapor Pressures : A Kinetic Approach, Samuel Bernard Bliden

Dissertations and Theses

A kinetic model was applied to vapor pressure data obtained by a variable flow method. The vapor pressures of benzoic acid, naphthalene, benzophenone, and phenylhydrazine were measured at temperatures of 293K to 307K. The data are summarized in the data table on the following page. These data were obtained by passing air over a sample of the substance in a tube. The air stream was combusted, and a flame ionization detector was used to measure the mass of CO2 so obtained. Several different flow rates were used at each temperature with each substance.

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis Jan 1984

High Valent Chromium (V) And Chromium (Vi) Complexes, Harry Bennett Davis

Dissertations and Theses

A new preparative route to the only neutral chromium (V) oxide fluoride, chromium oxide trifluoride, has been accomplished by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride at high temperature. The chromium oxide trifluoride is produced as crystals which are suitable for single crystal studies. In reactions of chromium oxide trifluoride with alkali and alkaline metal fluorides in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, new chromium(V) oxide fluoride salts were obtained; these salts were not of high purity due to unknown problems. An attempt to prepare chromium oxide tetrafluoride by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride failed …

A Theoretical And Experimental Examination Of Sodium Chloride Hydration, Debra Conway Modra Jan 1984

A Theoretical And Experimental Examination Of Sodium Chloride Hydration, Debra Conway Modra

Dissertations and Theses

A Hitachi Hu 125C transmission electron microscope in which the standard specimen holder was replaced by an environmental cell was used to observe the hydration of sodium chloride crystals. To observe Kelvin curvature and solubility effects sodium chloride crystals which were 0.1u or smaller were of special interest. An electrohome video system attached to the electron microscope was used to record the sodium chloride hydration for subsequent particle measurement and viewing.

A theoretical model was also developed. Thermodynamic properties such as the Kelvin curvature and solubility effects were considered as well as the kinetic expressions for salt dissolution/recrystalization and water …

Ionization Of Heavy Atoms By Polarized Relativistic Protons, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi Oct 1983

Ionization Of Heavy Atoms By Polarized Relativistic Protons, P.T. Leung, M. L. Rustgi

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effect due to the polarization of the incident high-energy (~GeV) proton beam on the ionization cross section of heavy atoms is investigated. In particular, with the use of Darwin wave functions for the atomic electron, the effect for hydrogenlike atoms is worked out. A numerical illustration shows that the polarization effect is completely insignificant. The authors also conclude that the K-shell ionization process is completely insensitive to the polarization of the incident beam.

The Application Of Exact Electrodiffusion Theory To Ion Transport Across Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Scott Cohen Aug 1983

The Application Of Exact Electrodiffusion Theory To Ion Transport Across Lipid Bilayer Membranes, Scott Cohen

Dissertations and Theses

The question of how ions interact with each other and with the potential energy barrier in thin lipid bilayer membranes has interested investigators for several years. The application of electrodiffusion theory to the study of this question is the central theme of this work. We have calculated current-voltage curves for barriers of various shapes and heights, in each case by means of numerically integrating the exact electrodiffusion equation as well as this same equation in the constant field approximation. We have also calculated the total charge in the membrane for the same conditions under which we have calculated the current-voltage …

Generalized Response Of Chemiluminescence Analyzers, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, Robert J. O'Brien, Thomas M. Hard Aug 1983

Generalized Response Of Chemiluminescence Analyzers, A. A. Mehrabzadeh, Robert J. O'Brien, Thomas M. Hard

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The mass flow and chemical kinetic equations for a gaseous chemiluminescence (CL) analyzer are formulated and solved. The resultant equation can be used to predict the absolute response of the analyzer as a function of the sample flow rate, the sample gas pressure, the chamber pressure, the chamber volume, the mass flow rate and mole fraction of the reagent gas, and the rate constants of the relevant chemical processes. Thus, the equation allows optimization of these parameters. It is shown that for varying sample pressure the analyzer can be used to measure either concentration or mole fraction and that interfering …

Derivation And Test Of Predictions Of A Discrete Latent State Model For Signed Number Addition Test Performance, Kentaro Yamamoto Jul 1983

Derivation And Test Of Predictions Of A Discrete Latent State Model For Signed Number Addition Test Performance, Kentaro Yamamoto

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an investigation of the performance of a discrete latent state model devised by Paulson (1982) to account for signed-number arithmetic test data gathered by Birenbaum and Tatsuoka (1980). One hundred twenty nine students took a test which consists of sixteen item types with four parallel arithmetic items of each type. The present study utilizes the five addition item types of four items each; hence, there are four parallel subtests. Responses to the addition items can be analyzed in terms of two components: the sign component (is the sign correct?), and the absolute value component (is the size …

Depositional Model Of The Antelope Coal Field, Wyoming, Christine M. Budai Jun 1983

Depositional Model Of The Antelope Coal Field, Wyoming, Christine M. Budai

Dissertations and Theses

The coal-bearing sediments of the Antelope coal field in the southcentral Powder River Basin, Wyoming were deposited in paludal and tributary subsystems of the fluvial system that existed in the basin during the early Tertiary. A depositional model for the Antelope coal field was constructed from data collected from approximately 500 drill holes that penetrated the upper 90 meters (300 feet) of the Fort Union Formation. The depositional environments were interpreted from lithologic descriptions and guidelines established in the literature.

The two main coal seams at the Antelope coal field are the Anderson and stratigraphically lower Canyon coal seams. They …

The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque May 1983

The Combined Effect Of Cu And Zn On Selenastrum Capricornutum, Helmer Colonia-Roque

Dissertations and Theses

It has been demonstrated that the toxicity of heavy metals depends on their chemical speciation and can be related to their free ion activities, rather than the total metal concentrations. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of combined free ions of zinc and copper on the toxicity to the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. This alga was grown in a defined medium, under controlled laboratory conditions, with a varying range of zinc and copper concentrations. The growth rate of the alga was inhibited at pZn = 5.93 or at pCu = 7.24. The results suggest that …

The Effects Of Various Chemical Treatments On The Surface Area Of Coals, Maria Margaret Ludvig Mar 1983

The Effects Of Various Chemical Treatments On The Surface Area Of Coals, Maria Margaret Ludvig

Dissertations and Theses

Surface areas of most American coals are small when measured by N2 adsorption at 77 K and large when measured by CO2 adsorption at 298 K, implying that the majority of the pores are less than 5 Å in diameter. This small pore size would restrict many gaseous and liquid reactants from entering the internal pore system of the coal, and hence, reduces the efficiency of coal conversion. Therefore, if the surface area, as measured by N2 (77 K), could be increased, that is, to increase the pore size, the conversion of coal into useful products should …
