Reconstructing 42 Years (1979–2020) Of Great Lakes Surface Temperature Through A Deep Learning Approach, Miraj Kayastha, Tao Liu, Daniel Titze, Timothy C. Havens, Chenfu Huang, Pengfei Xue

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Accurate estimates for the lake surface temperature (LST) of the Great Lakes are critical to understanding the regional climate. Dedicated lake models of various complexity have been used to simulate LST but they suffer from noticeable biases and can be computationally expensive. Additionally, the available historical LST datasets are limited by either short temporal coverage (<30 >years) or lower spatial resolution (0.25° × 0.25°). Therefore, in this study, we employed a deep learning model based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks to produce a daily LST dataset for the Great Lakes that spans an unparalleled 42 years (1979–2020) at …

Comprehensive Analysis Of Seismic Signals From Pacaya Volcano Using Deep Learning Event Detection, Jessica L. Devlieg Jan 2023

Comprehensive Analysis Of Seismic Signals From Pacaya Volcano Using Deep Learning Event Detection, Jessica L. Devlieg

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Pacaya volcano located 30 km SW of Guatemala City, Guatemala, has been erupting intermittently since 1961. Monitoring of seismicity is crucial to understanding current activity levels within Pacaya. Traditional methods of picking these small earthquakes in this noisy environment are imprecise. Pacaya produces many small events that can easily blend in with the background noise. A possible solution for this problem is a machine learning program to pick first arrivals for these earthquakes. We tested a deep learning algorithm (Mousavi et al., 2020) for fast and reliable seismic signal detection within a volcanic system. Data from multiple deployments were used, …

Michigan Tech Publications

Protein succinylation is an important post-translational modification (PTM) responsible for many vital metabolic activities in cells, including cellular respiration, regulation, and repair. Here, we present a novel approach that combines features from supervised word embedding with embedding from a protein language model called ProtT5-XL-UniRef50 (hereafter termed, ProtT5) in a deep learning framework to predict protein succinylation sites. To our knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to employ embedding from a pre-trained protein language model to predict protein succinylation sites. The proposed model, dubbed LMSuccSite, achieves state-of-the-art results compared to existing methods, with performance scores of 0.36, 0.79, 0.79 …

Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao Jan 2022

Machine Learning-Driven Surrogate Models For Electrolytes, Tong Gao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

We have developed a lattice Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on the diffusion-limited aggregation model that accounts for the effect of the physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) on lithium dendrite growth. Our simulations show that the size asymmetry between the cation and anion, the dielectric constant, and the volume fraction of ILs are critical factors to significantly suppress the dendrite growth, primarily due to substantial changes in electric-field screening. Specifically, the volume fraction of ILs has the optimal value for dendrite suppression. The present simulation method indicates potential challenges for the model extension to macroscopic systems. Therefore, we also …

A Surrogate Model Of Molecular Dynamics Simulations For Polar Fluids: Supervised Learning Methods For Molecular Polarization And Unsupervised Methods For Phase Classification, Zackerie W. Hjorth

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Molecular Dynamic (MD) simulation is a standard computational tool in soft matter physics. While very powerful, it is computationally expensive, leading to some simulations taking days or even weeks to complete depending on the size of your computer cluster. Finding computationally cheap surrogate models which can learn the output features of MD simulation is therefore highly motivated. In this report I explore the use of deep neural network ensembles as well as support vector machine regressors as surrogate models for MD simulation. From the output of the surrogate models, we can then employ unsupervised learning methods to get insight into …

Using Text Mining And Machine Learning Classifiers To Analyze Stack Overflow, Taylor Morris Jan 2021

Using Text Mining And Machine Learning Classifiers To Analyze Stack Overflow, Taylor Morris

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

StackOverflow is an extensively used platform for programming questions. In this report, text mining and machine learning classifiers such as decision trees and Naive Bayes are used to evaluate whether a given question posted on StackOverflow will be closed or answered. While multiple models were used in the analysis, the performance for the models was no better than the majority classifier. Future work to develop better performing classifiers to understand why a question is closed or answered will require additional natural language processing or methods to address the imbalanced data.

Assessment Of Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Occurrence Using Classifier Tree, Priscilla Addison, Thomas Oommen, Qiuying Sha Jan 2019

Assessment Of Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Occurrence Using Classifier Tree, Priscilla Addison, Thomas Oommen, Qiuying Sha

Michigan Tech Publications

Besides the dangers of an actively burning wildfire, a plethora of other hazardous consequences can occur afterwards. Debris flows are among the most hazardous of these, being known to cause fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure. Although debris flows are not exclusive to fire affected areas, a wildfire can increase a location’s susceptibility by stripping its protective covers like vegetation and introducing destabilizing factors such as ash filling soil pores to increase runoff potential. Due to the associated dangers, researchers are developing statistical models to isolate susceptible locations. Existing models predominantly employ the logistic regression algorithm; however, previous studies have …

Effect Of Label Noise On The Machine-Learned Classification Of Earthquake Damage, Jared Frank, Umaa Rebbapragada, James Bialas, Thomas Oommen, Timothy C. Havens Aug 2017

Effect Of Label Noise On The Machine-Learned Classification Of Earthquake Damage, Jared Frank, Umaa Rebbapragada, James Bialas, Thomas Oommen, Timothy C. Havens

Michigan Tech Publications

Automated classification of earthquake damage in remotely-sensed imagery using machine learning techniques depends on training data, or data examples that are labeled correctly by a human expert as containing damage or not. Mislabeled training data are a major source of classifier error due to the use of imprecise digital labeling tools and crowdsourced volunteers who are not adequately trained on or invested in the task. The spatial nature of remote sensing classification leads to the consistent mislabeling of classes that occur in close proximity to rubble, which is a major byproduct of earthquake damage in urban areas. In this study, …
