Essays On Applied Welfare Economics., Sutirtha Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The measurement of welfare forms the foundation of public policy analysis. It is an area where empirical investigations clearly benefits from theoretical insight and where theoretical concepts are brought alive and appropriately focused by the discipline of empirical relevance and policy design. While welfare measurement at the micro level is of independent interest, of greater concern is the well-being of groups of households/individuals.A widely discussed issue in the literature of welfare economics is ‘whose welfare to measure’ when we are interested to measure the well-being of a group of individuals. The most common approach is to assume the existence of …

On The Analysis Of Some Recursive Equations In Probability., Arunangshu Biswas Dr. Sep 2015

On The Analysis Of Some Recursive Equations In Probability., Arunangshu Biswas Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis deals with recursive systems used in theoretical and applied probability. Recursive systems are stochastic processes {Xn}n≥1 where the Xn depends on the earlier Xn−1 and also on some increment process which is uncorrelated with the process Xn. The simplest example of a recursive system is the Random Walk, whose properties have been extensively studied. Mathematically a recursive system takes the form Xn = f(Xn−1, n), is the increment/ innovation procedure and f(·, ·) is a function on the product space of xn and n. We first consider a recursive system called Self-Normalized sums (SNS) corresponding to a sequence …

Studies In Set Theoretic Hierarchies:From Borel Sets To R-Sets., Rana Barua Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The present thesis consists of three parts.Part I of the thesis is devoted to the study of regularity propertion of classes of sets obtained from 8-8 operations applied to the class of clopen set s. In particular, the classes of set s obtained by applying the hierarchy of increasingly complex R-operations {Rp,), are investing at ed. Our points of departure in this study are the recent works on R- sets by Hi nm an and Burgess. In this thesis we have unified the methods of Hinman and Burgess by extensively u sing the game quantifier and methods of inductive definability. …
