A new model is developed for the analysis of muon spin relaxation (mu-SR) measurements of muonium (Mu) reaction rates with other chemical species. The kinetics component of the model is specifically developed for addition reactions but can be extended to direct reactions. The polarization component of the model assumes that the adduct formed possesses a single, effective spin precession frequency. The complete model is solved to obtain an analytic expression for the mu-SR signal as a function of time. Both a time-ordered sequence method and a Boltzmann spin equation method give equivalent solutions. These solutions are analyzed under various kinetic …

A Fourier transform method for calculating action variables and semiclassical eigenvalues in molecules starting from Cartesian coordinates and momenta is developed and applied to the determination of rotational semiclassical eigenvalues for rigid asymmetric top molecules. The method involves calculating rotational actions by using Fourier representations of the symmetric top action‐angle variables to express the integrals. The question of what is the optimum quantization axis is considered, and it is found that the same primitive semiclassical eigenvalues are obtained independent of which principal axis is used for quantization provided that the replacement J → J+ 1/2 is made. Several ab initio studies have focused on the minimum energy path region of the hydroperoxyl potential energy surface (PES) [J. Chem. Phys. 88, 6273 (1988)] and the saddle point region for H‐atom exchange via a T‐shaped HO2 complex [J. Chem. Phys. 91, 2373 (1989)]. Further, the results of additional calculations [J. Chem. Phys. 94, 7068 (1991)] have been reported, which, when combined with the earlier studies, provide a global description (but not an analytic representation) of the PES for this reaction. Theoretical Characterization Of The Minimum Energy Path For Hydrogen Atom Addition To N2: Implications For The Unimolecular Lifetime Of Hn2, S Walch, Ronald Duchovic, C Rohlfing

The minimum energy path (MEP) for the addition of a hydrogen atom to N2 is characterized in CASSCF/externally contracted CI calculations using a [4s3p2d1f/3s2p1d] ANO basis set, with additional single point calculations at the stationary points of the potential energy surface using a [5s4p3d2f/4s3p2s] ANO basis set. These calculations represent the most extensive set of ab initio calculations on HN2 completed to date, yielding a zero-point corrected barrier for HN2 dissociation of ?8.5 kcal mol-1. The lifetime of the HN2 species is estimated from the calculated geometries and energetics using both conventional transition state theory and a method which utilizes …

Currently, few tools exist to aid the FPGA developer in translating an algorithm designed for a general-purpose-processor into one that is precision-optimized for FPGAs. This task requires extensive knowledge of both the algorithm and the target hardware. We present a design-time tool, Precis, which assists the developer in analyzing the precision requirements of algorithms specified in MATLAB. Through the combined use of simulation, user input, and program analysis, we demonstrate a methodology for precision analysis that can aid the developer in focusing their manual precision optimization efforts.

We present a low-cost stereo vision implementation suitable for use in autonomous vehicle applications and designed with agricultural applications in mind. This implementation utilizes the Census transform algorithm to calculate depth maps from a stereo pair of automotive-grade CMOS cameras. The final prototype utilizes commodity hardware, including a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA, to process 320times240 pixel images at greater than 150 frames per second and deliver them via a USB 2.0 interface.

In this paper, we present a method for FPGA datapath precision optimization subject to user-defined area and error constraints. This work builds upon our previous research which presented a methodology for optimizing the dynamic range- the most significant bit position. In this work, we present an automated optimization technique for the least-significant bit position of circuit datapaths. We present results describing the effectiveness of our methods on typical signal and image processing kernels.

This paper presents our work in solving one of the weakest links in 802.11-based indoor-localization: the training of ground-truth received signal strength data. While crowdsourcing this information has been demonstrated to be a viable alternative to the time consuming and accuracy-limited process of manual training, one of the chief drawbacks is the rate at which a system can be trained. We demonstrate an approach that utilizes users' calendar and appointment information to perform interactionless training of an 802.11-based indoor localization system. The self-assembly of helical ribbons is examined in a variety of multicomponent enantiomerically pure systems that contain a bile salt or a nonionic detergent, a phosphatidylcholine or a fatty acid, and a steroid analog of cholesterol. In almost all systems, two different pitch types of helical ribbons are observed: high pitch, with a pitch angle of 54 ± 2°, and low pitch, with a pitch angle of 11 ± 2°. Collection and analysis of pavement distress data is an important component of any pavement‐management system. Various systems are currently under development that automate this process. They consist of appropriate hardware for the acquisition of pavement distress images and, in some cases, software for the analysis of the collected data. An important step in the automatic interpretation of images is segmentation, the process of extracting the objects of interest (distresses) from the background. Collection and analysis of pavement distress data are receiving attention for their potential to improve the quality of information on pavement condition. We present an approach for the automated classificaton of asphalt pavement distresses recorded on video or photographic film. Based on a model that describes the statistical properties of pavement images, we develop algorithms for image enhancement, segmentation, and distress classification. Image enhancement is based on subtraction of an “average” background: segmentation assigns one of four possible values to pixels based on their likelihood of belonging to the object. Dynamic instability of microtubules may reach the steady state with exponentially growing or decaying length distribution in a confined geometry such as a cell-like environment. In this brief communication, the target finding time for these microtubules with the stochastic polymerization in a confined geometry is compared with the reversible polymerization. It is shown that the efficiency of microtubules with increasing length distribution at the steady state depends on the location of a target. They are very efficient in finding a target located at the cell cortex, which confirms the significant biological role they play in rapidly reaching the cell cortex …

This paper describes a pilot project with the purpose of evaluating the usefulness of tablet PCs for university professors. The focus is on the value of tablets primarily with respect to teaching and learning (and not for research or administrative work). Sixty-four professors, distributed across the various schools of a university, were provided with tablet PCs and were trained in their use.
