Lake Herman, a recreational, shallow, warm water prairie lake near Madison, South Dakota drain in extensively cultivated watershed and acts as a siltation basin for a chain of four lakes. The lake is more than half silted in and since 1968 various rehabilitation efforts have been made, including the construction of silt traps and lake dredging.

Continuation of the monitoring of twenty plus chemical levels and biological populations of green algae, blue-green algae and diatoms has revealed two major changes: (1) ortho phosphate and total phosphorus levels (which increased markedly with the beginning of dredging) have decreased since dredging has …

During the summer of 1974, I sampled sites of vegetation representative of successional trends in plant communities along the Missouri River floodplain from Sioux City, Iowa, to Rulo, Nebraska. Five district community types listed from youngest to oldest are as follows: Salix spp. – dominated, Populus deltoides – dominated, Platanus occidentalis-Ulmus rubra – dominated, Tilia americana-Quercus rubra – dominated, and Quercus macrocarpa-Carya ovata – dominated vegetation.

The ¹⁴C light and dark bottle technique for measurement of primary production was utilized as a means of assessing the amount of inorganic carbon being converted Into organic form by the photosynthesis of phytoplankton populations In the Boulder Basin of Lake Mead.

Spatial and time series changes of productivity levels observed at eight sampling locations within Boulder Basin Indicate that the Influence of treated municipal arts' industrial effluent flowing into Les Vegas Bay is contributing high levels of available nutrients at Las Vegas Wash Inlet to cause productivity to approximate those levels associated with polluted waters.

Sand-sized residues from partial acetic acid digestion of three samples of the Big Springs Limestone Member of the Lecompton Limestone (Pennsylvanian) from two localities in Cass County, Nebraska, have yielded sixteen genera of microfossils from five major groups of organisms and numerous other whole and partial fossils from seven other groups not identified to the genus level. The Prediction Of Lake Huron Lake-Effect Snowfall Systems, Kenneth F. Dewey

Data was collected during the 1971-72 snowfall season for the Lake Huron basin. The bulk aerodynamic approach, as formulated by Priestly, was utilized to estimate the daily average flux of heat and moisture over the lake. It was hypothesized that discriminant analysis could be employed to determine the threshold value (discriminant index) of the energy flux which is necessary for the occurrence of the lake-effect snowfall system. To determine the validity of this threshold value, the discriminant index was applied to a series of historical data. Food Habits, Growth, And Production Of Young-Of-The-Year Walleyes, Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum (Mitchell), In A South Dakota Pond, Ronne E. Walker

A 12.45 hectare South Dakota pond was stocked with 25,000 walleye, Stizostedion vitreum vitreum (Mitichell), fingerling on 13 June, 1973. Walleyes were monitored for growth rate and food habits until 13 September, 1973. Walleyes were removed from the pond using various methods in order to evaluate the efficiency of removal methods. The average total length and average weight of walleyes in the pond increased from 43.5 mm and 0.50 g on 13 June to 167.1 mm and 41.25 g on 13 September. This was a gain of 123. 6 mm and 40.75 g or an average daily increase of 1.34 …

Doses of 4 g of atrazine (AAtrex) were not lethal to penned hen pheasants (Phasispus colchicus), but levels of 6, 8, 10 and 12 g induced mortality. Pen studies to determine the effects of atrazine on reproduction of hen pheasants were conducted with two replicates of the basic test. Birds were administered treatment levels of 0, 100, 200, or 400 mg of atrazine per hen per week. Egg production and gain in weight of hens were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected in shell thickness and pipping rates, while …

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant

Food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), yellow bullhead (Ictalurus natalis), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were studied during 1973 and 1974 in Abbey Pond, South Dakota. Organisms found in young-of-the-year fish stomachs and in plankton samples were identified and counted in the laboratory. Zooplankton, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food organisms consumed by young fishes. Using Ivlev’s electivity index food electivity by the fishes for zooplankton was calculated. The size-specific food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass progressed from entomostracans to aquatic insects to fish. In most cases zooplanktons …

Wetland distribution and utilization by breeding waterfowl of stockdams, dugouts, and natural wetlands were investigated in South Dakota during 1973 and 1974. Wetlands in South Dakota were estimated to encompass 590,499 ha and to total 631,557 basins. Natural ponds and lakes comprised 74.7 percent of the wetland area and 46.0 percent of the total number. Stockdams composed 13.9 percent of the wetland area and 14.0 percent of the number, and dugouts 0.3 percent and 8.1 percent of the state’s wetland area and number respectively. Ninety-one percent of the ponds and lakes were found east of the Missouri River and 86.7 …

A creel survey, consisting of two independent surveys, was conducted on Lake Sharpe, South Dakota from May, 1973, through May, 1974. An aerial fisherman count was used to estimate fishing pressure and an angler interview survey was used to estimate catch rates, mean party size, mean fisherman day, and residence of the anglers. The results of the two surveys were combined to estimate harvest. The separate surveys were combined to estimate harvest. The present report is a biological inventory in conjunction with the Las Vegas Wash Unit, Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act, Title II. The boundaries of the project encompass sections of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, East Las Vegas and areas along Las Vegas Wash extending to its drainage point in Las Vegas Bay in Lake Mead. Therefore, it encompasses a wide array of ecological situations and landscapes ranging from essentially natural to various stages of urban development.

Breeding Waterfowl Populations In South Dakota, Wayne G. Brewster

Breeding waterfowl in South Dakota were censused on 500 legal quarter sections within 125 clusters representing a proportional stratified random sample of 0.16 percent of the state area. Two breeding pair counts, one in May and second in June, were conducted each year on the sample units in 1973 and 1974. Densities of total breeding pairs averaged 5.58 and 2.30 pairs per km2 in 1973 and 1974, respectively. Estimated populations based upon these densities were 1,067,500 breeding pairs in 1973 and 439,600 breeding pairs in 1974.
