A Case Study Of How Ninth Grade Mathematics Students Construct Knowledge During A Productive Failure Model, Amy F. Westbrook Dr.
A Case Study Of How Ninth Grade Mathematics Students Construct Knowledge During A Productive Failure Model, Amy F. Westbrook Dr.
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explain how ninth grade mathematics students at a rural high school in Georgia constructed knowledge through student talk when problem solving using Kapur’s (2012) productive failure design. An embedded case study design was used to understand how a group of students constructed knowledge through their use of talk, persistence during the task, and use of prior knowledge while working on a productive failure modeled task. Triangulation resulted from the collected data from multiple sources, which included videotaping, interviewing, and analyzing student artifacts. Utilization of the constructivist perspectives of Vygotsky (1934/1962), Piaget (1971), …

Libraries Respond To Mobile Ubiquity: Research And Assessment Of Mobile Device Usage Trends For Academic And Medical Libraries, Megan M. Hurst, Eleanor I. Cook, J. Michael Lindsay, Martha F. Earl
Libraries Respond To Mobile Ubiquity: Research And Assessment Of Mobile Device Usage Trends For Academic And Medical Libraries, Megan M. Hurst, Eleanor I. Cook, J. Michael Lindsay, Martha F. Earl
Charleston Library Conference
The authors consider trends in mobile device usage for the Internet as a whole, for EBSCO Discovery Service across all client libraries, and at two specific libraries: Preston Medical Library, serving the University of Tennessee (UT) Graduate School of Medicine and UT Medical Center, and the Joyner Library at East Carolina University, serving students and faculty on the main campus. Librarians at Preston Medical Library conducted a survey to determine which mobile devices, platforms, and apps were used by their patrons in 2012. East Carolina University piloted an iPad and e-reader lending program in 2010–2011. The results of each are …

13th Annual Undergraduate Student Symposium, Farquhar Honors College
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The Undergraduate Student Symposium, sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, presents student projects through presentations, papers, and poster displays. The event serves as a “showcase” demonstrating the outstanding scholarship of undergraduate students at NSU. The Symposium is open to undergraduate students from all disciplines. Projects cover areas of student scholarship ranging from the experimental and the applied to the computational, theoretical, artistic, and literary. They are taken from class assignments as well as from independent projects. The projects do not have to be complete; presentations can represent any stage in the concept’s evolution, from proposal and literature …
Google Chrome: More Than A Browser, Daniel E. Rivera
Google Chrome: More Than A Browser, Daniel E. Rivera
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)
Chrome is more than a browser. It’s an operating system in itself, and it’s transforming the educational computing experience. Come learn about Chrome’s features such as data syncing across computers (bookmarks, passwords, settings, etc), and most importantly, Chrome-specific apps. Learn about Chromebooks as well - those powerful, fast, and cheap laptops that are spreading like wildfire.
Hitting Pause On Organic Chemistry, Jenny B. Vu
Hitting Pause On Organic Chemistry, Jenny B. Vu
Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)
Written procedures for performing organic chemistry experiments are replaced by visual demonstrations that allow students to watch these videos at home and/ or in the laboratory. These previously recorded demonstrations allow students to watch, pause, and rewind the video to better understand laboratory techniques.
Session E-4: Teach Students Robotics!, Pat Patankar
Session E-4: Teach Students Robotics!, Pat Patankar
Professional Learning Day
In this session, we will discuss how to introduce your students to Robotics. We will talk about the programing environment, the hardware that is required, and the resources you'll need to get your program up and running. We will discuss how to acquire them. A number of them are free - and others can be obtained by the students themselves (in fact they may already have what they'll need!).
Session F-4: Modeling An Earthquake In Your Classroom, Brian Grublesky
Session F-4: Modeling An Earthquake In Your Classroom, Brian Grublesky
Professional Learning Day
Teachers will model earthquakes using both technology and hands-on inquiry activities. Teachers will have a chance to engineer an “earthquake proof” building and use the engineering process to test and redesign their buildings before being tested on a shake table. We will also discuss how these activities connect not only to the Next Generation Science Standards, but the Common Core State Standards as well.
Session D-4: Teaching Quantum Mechanics, Peter Dong
Session D-4: Teaching Quantum Mechanics, Peter Dong
Professional Learning Day
Quantum mechanics is a part of modern life, playing a major role in chemistry, computing, nanotechnology, cryptography, and even biology. Many students are fascinated by the principles of quantum mechanics - and wave-particle duality is now in the Next Generation Science Standards. This course will present a basic introduction to quantum mechanics, accessible to middle or high school students, that will give students a taste of how strange and wonderful the universe really is (while also meeting the new standard). Teachers will be given slides and materials so they can teach the lesson themselves.
Session B-2: Build Student Engagement, Mental Math, And Reasoning With "Math Talks", Sendhil Revuluri
Session B-2: Build Student Engagement, Mental Math, And Reasoning With "Math Talks", Sendhil Revuluri
Professional Learning Day
"Math talks" are quick routines that you can implement in your classroom within days. They can raise engagement, build efficient, accurate, and flexible mental math strategies, and help students construct arguments and critique reasoning. We will engage in math talks, analyzing how they can be enacted in the classroom and designed for specific goals or respond to specific misconceptions. Participants will learn about math talks that support understanding of number, algebra, and other domains.
Session B-1: Geometry In Art & Architecture, Julie Dowling
Session B-1: Geometry In Art & Architecture, Julie Dowling
Professional Learning Day
Math is all around us! Discover how to implement geometry lessons using art and architecture that the students see around them every day.
Session B-5: Planetary Science And The Ngss, Eric Hawker
Session B-5: Planetary Science And The Ngss, Eric Hawker
Professional Learning Day
The goal of this session is to use what we understand about other planets and moons in our Solar System in order to get a better understanding of the Earth.
Session A-2: Cycloids!, Ruth Dover
Session A-2: Cycloids!, Ruth Dover
Professional Learning Day
This session includes a hands-on exploration to see graphs of different types of cycloids. Participants will use trigonometry to create the parametric equations for the graphs. This topic lends itself nicely to projects for pre-calculus students. Software will be shown to help see more examples and patterns.
Peering Into The Discourse Of Industrial Design Training Through A Sustainability Lens, Norman M. Su, Haodan Tan, Eli Blevis
Peering Into The Discourse Of Industrial Design Training Through A Sustainability Lens, Norman M. Su, Haodan Tan, Eli Blevis
Design Thinking Research Symposium
Now well established in HCI, the lens of sustainability may be applied to educational practices in industrial design and interaction design. By sustainability, we mean to include notions of mitigation of the environmental effects of climate change. In this paper, we present an analysis of student projects in a junior and senior industrial design class dataset. Drawing from discourse analysis, we examine how the industrial design classroom serves as a space to socially construct the philosophies and goals inherent in “good” design. We then examine how the lens of sustainability is implicated into the industrial design “way” as espoused by …
