Urban-Related Distribution Patterns Of An Iconic Salish Sea Mesopredator, The Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus Dofleini), Eliza C. Heery, Amy G. Olsen, Blake E. (Blake Edward) Feist, Kenneth P. Sebens

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Like many coastal areas globally, the Salish Sea has undergone rapid urbanization over recent decades. Terrestrial research suggests urbanization facilitates a variety of mesopredators by enhancing food and shelter resources and by limiting apex predation. Yet urbanization’s effect on mesopredators in the marine environment has rarely been examined. The giant Pacific octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini, is an iconic mesopredator of the Pacific Northwest due to its size and cognition, and is thought to reach a particularly large maximum size in inland waters of the Salish Sea. We examined the spatial distribution patterns and habitat use of giant Pacific octopus in Puget …

How 19 Years Of Bc Coastal Waterbird Citizen Science Data Is Informing Conservation Planning, Karen Devitt, James Casey

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Fraser River Estuary Important Bird and Biodiversity Area consisting of Sturgeon Bank, Roberts Bank, Boundary Bay and upland areas was designated in 2016 as an IBA in Danger by Birdlife International. The designation is based on the myriad of threats across the delta that have developed despite several transboundary and international designations of the region including a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance listing since 1982 and a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site designation since 2004. Despite these listings, declines in coastal waterbirds continue. The Coastal Waterbird Surveys have been running along the BC portion of the Salish Sea …

From The Ground Up: Ideas For Supporting Successful Citizen Scientists, Betsy Carlson

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

As the acceptance of citizen science and public participatory research improves and funding sources diminish, interest is turning to the cost effectiveness of using volunteers to collect data. For over 35 years, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center has been training citizen scientists and managing volunteers for the purpose of inspiring conservation of the Salish Sea. We have developed independent research as well as partnered with other organizations to conduct over 25 different citizen science projects in this time. Our efforts are based on concerns of our volunteers and priorities set by state and federal agencies. PTMSC projects include monitoring …

Effective Application Of Citizen Science For Adaptive Management Of An Aquatic Marine Reserve, Eleanor Hines Apr 2018

Effective Application Of Citizen Science For Adaptive Management Of An Aquatic Marine Reserve, Eleanor Hines

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Citizen science is becoming more broadly recognized as an important means of gathering scientific data. Blending scientific data gaps with the strengths of citizen science will result in meaningful data that can inform policy for resource management agencies. In addition, using volunteers builds a base of citizens with improved understanding of complex ecological and policy issues. Here, we present a case study of an intertidal monitoring program in the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve that has developed and adapted a robust citizen science program over the past 5 years. This program will be incorporated into the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve Management …

The Citizen Scientific Method: Tapping A Human Natural Resource In Ecosystem Restoration, Bianca S. Perla, Greg Rabourn Apr 2018

The Citizen Scientific Method: Tapping A Human Natural Resource In Ecosystem Restoration, Bianca S. Perla, Greg Rabourn

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Citizen science forms a nexus point between research and education, between social outreach and project implementation, and between local knowledge (traditional ecological knowledge) and scientific knowledge. For this reason, citizen science can be a valuable tool to integrate the many different players in ecosystem restoration projects and help projects succeed. Citizen science can increase civic engagement in ecosystem restoration, fill in data gaps, and help make adaptive ecosystem management a real community process. However, significant challenges often impede the ability of citizen science projects to reach their full potential. Here, we discuss trends and insights gained through examining three citizen …

Citizen Science In The Aquatic Reserves, Erica Bleke Apr 2018

Citizen Science In The Aquatic Reserves, Erica Bleke

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has designated eight Aquatic Reserves in the state of Washington that encompass important native ecosystems on state-owned aquatic lands. Seven of these reserves are in the Salish Sea, and of these, six are supported by Citizen Stewardship Committees. These Committees are made up of dedicated local volunteers who help the DNR implement the management actions of their nearby reserve through outreach, education, and citizen science projects. Within the network of the Aquatic Reserves, the current citizen science being conducted by volunteers is diverse and dependent upon the needs of the reserve and the skillset …

The Jelly Team: Citizen Science At A Small Community Aquarium, Katy Kachmarik, Bri Gabel, Matt Wilson, Jessica Lotz, Elise Pletcher, Vanessa Hunt, Rus Higley Apr 2018

The Jelly Team: Citizen Science At A Small Community Aquarium, Katy Kachmarik, Bri Gabel, Matt Wilson, Jessica Lotz, Elise Pletcher, Vanessa Hunt, Rus Higley

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

The efforts and successes of a community volunteer group, ‘The Jelly Team’, exemplify citizen science achievement at the Marine Science and Technology Center, the marine biology and aquarium facility of Highline College in Des Moines, Washington. With little professional direction or funding, these volunteers have succeeded in culturing Moon Jellies to provide an ongoing display in the public aquarium, and are now expanding their activities to culturing other species and looking to provide specimens to local schools. A popular display at the MaST public aquarium is a kreisel tank featuring Aurelia labiata, the Pacific coast species of the Moon Jelly. …

Orca Network's Whale Sighting Network: Citizen Science And So Much More, Susan Berta, Howard Garrett, Alisa Lemire Brooks

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Orca Network’s Whale Sighting Network increases awareness of the Southern Resident orcas and other whales, and fosters a stewardship ethic to motivate a diverse audience to take action to protect Northwest waters. The Network provides hands-on opportunities for the public to report sightings of whales, gathering important data for researchers and encouraging shore-based whale watching and Be Whale Wise boating. The Network improves communication between researchers, agencies and the public, raising awareness about whales and related issues. As people become educated through the network, an ever-increasing amount of data is collected, and the public and researchers are able to share …

Some Like It Hot: Using Citizen Science To Identify Marine Bird Hotspots In Puget Sound, Timothy Jones, Scott F. Pearson, Julia Parrish, Toby Ross, Peter Hodum, Eric John Ward, Jennifer Lang, Adam Sedgley

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Puget Sound, situated in the southern portion of the Salish Sea, supports approximately 172 marine bird species that face a multitude of threats, ranging from chronic oiling to entanglement in derelict fishing gear. As local population numbers shift due to both intrinsic and extrinsic forcing (e.g., on the breeding grounds), understanding the pattern of species' use of habitats and locations across the Sound can inform conservation planning. Using data collected by the Puget Sound Seabird Survey (PSSS) - a citizen science program that collects information on the abundance and distribution of marine birds in the nearshore environment throughout Puget Sound …
