In Latin America, cervical cancer is the second most common female cancer and the fourth most leading cancer of women around the world, with an estimated 342,000 deaths in 2020.1 This systematic review of literature gives insight into Latin Americas barriers to Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV) screening and prevention. A comprehensive literature review was conducted using google scholar, the WHO, and the CDC. Background: Global climate change has been occurring at an unprecedented rate and is damaging to human health. With women having specific health care needs, this literature review examines the relationship between women’s health (including maternal health) and global climate change through subtopics including global temperature and heat waves, carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution, natural disasters and extreme weather events, malnutrition and food insecurity, water supply and resource scarcity, and changing infectious disease patterns.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women around the world. In the Central American region, it is a leading cause of mortality for young women due to inadequate preventive and screening measures. The disease is slow-growing and caused by the human papillomavirus, which is transmitted via sexual contact. The HPV vaccination was created in order to prevent the disease, and there are a variety of quality screening methods to quickly identify progression. Many barriers to contraceptive use exist in sexually active Nicaraguan women, leading to increasingly high rates of unintended pregnancies among these women. Higher rates of depression, domestic abuse, and unemployment are also seen in this group of women. These women face more complications during pregnancy and receive higher rates of unsafe abortions, impacting the mom and the infant, as well as the community in which they live. Cervical cancer is the leading cause of mortality due to a malignant neoplasm for young women in Latin America and the leading cause of cancer among women of any age in Nicaragua. Additionally, cervical cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in females worldwide. This paper will focus on just the screening aspect of prevention. There are also vaccines now available for preventing certain oncologic strains of HPV which ultimately leads to prevention of cervical cancer.
