Millets As A Preventive Dietary Intervention For India’S Nutrition Transition: A Narrative Review Of Glycaemic And Micronutrient Evidence, Kundan Kaushal, Manisha Upadhyay, Shambhu Nath Dubey, Indrajeet Kumar Jha
Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)
India’s nutrition profile reflects a nutrition transition rather than a single narrative: a rapidly escalating burden of diet-related non-communicable disease, including an estimated 101 million people with diabetes, coexists with a severe and worsening burden of micronutrient deficiency, with anaemia affecting 57% of women and 67.1% of children. This narrative review examines millets, small-seeded cereals historically marginalised in Indian diets in favour of rice and wheat, as a preventive dietary intervention with plausible relevance to both ends of this transition. Evidence was drawn from peer-reviewed systematic reviews and meta-analyses, national survey data and documented delivery interventions, identified through searches of …

Wastewater surveillance is a powerful tool for monitoring infectious diseases within a population. However, as most wastewater surveillance relies on interconnected wastewater networks to provide samples representative of the population, many Pacific Islands have been excluded from benefiting from this tool due to their lack of reticulated sewerage systems. Many diseases of concern for the Pacific are detectable in wastewater even though individuals may be asymptomatic. We investigated whether analysis of wastewater from aircraft arriving in New Zealand from Pacific Island nations could be used as a proxy for in-country surveillance. Flights from the Pacific arrive in Auckland daily, with …

The Weight Of Stigma, Rebekah A. King, Michael S. Sinha
All Faculty Scholarship
Many health care providers, both implicitly and explicitly, perpetuate stigma in their treatment of patients classified as obese. While medical professionals understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment is ineffective, patients classified as obese are frequently offered limited treatment options that fail to account for their unique needs. Access to a range of effective treatment options has historically been limited, but new GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), have shown incredible promise in addressing the obesity crisis. Unfortunately, these transformative drugs are costly, in high demand, and not widely covered by insurance, rendering them inaccessible for …

A Puzzling Case Of Visual Disturbances Leads To A Fatal Neurodegenerative Diagnosis, Courtney J. Austin, Aaron Carrillo, Jennifer Rojas Huen, Victoria Parada
Research Colloquium
Background: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rare neurodegenerative disease in which early diagnosis is complicated by the presence of early non-specific and atypical presentations. Sporadic CJD (sCJD), the most common type of CJD, is caused by the spread of a disease-forming prion known as PrPSc. PrPSc multiplies and binds to the normal form of prion, or PrP, converting it to an abnormal, structurally altered disease form that spreads throughout the brain. sCJD can initially present with six different phenotypes: cognitive, affective, classic, visual (Heidenhain variant), atactic (Oppenheimer-Brownell variant), and indeterminate. The classic presentation of CJD includes rapidly progressive dementia with …
