Will Covid-19 Be Eradicated?, Matthew Kieke
Will Covid-19 Be Eradicated?, Matthew Kieke
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In this paper I want to define the meaning of “eradication”, explain the history of various diseases that have been eradicated, and compare and contrast them to covid-19, to answer the question of “Will covid-19 be eradicated”?
Analysis Of Circadian Rhythm Irregularities On The Health Of Shift Workers, Sahil Rajan
Analysis Of Circadian Rhythm Irregularities On The Health Of Shift Workers, Sahil Rajan
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Circadian rhythms involve the natural 24 wake-sleep cycle that governs proper maintenance of biological sleep schedules. Circadian rhythm disruption has been associated with health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and mental health disorders such as bipolar and sleep disorders. In this study, a survey method was utilized in order to analyze specific population demographics to determine whether working day or night shifts predisposed individuals to health issues due to disruptions in their circadian rhythms. This study was also carried out to observe popular coping strategies among night shift workers. Of all the variables tested comparing the difference between day and …
Impact Of Covid-19 On Ohio's National Parks Visitation, Ryan Grzeschik
Impact Of Covid-19 On Ohio's National Parks Visitation, Ryan Grzeschik
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way in which society operates in order to get the novel disease under control. Businesses throughout the United States have had to close or reduce provided services, stay at home orders have secluded many people, and social distancing limits contact between others so many are turning to the parks system to cope with these changes. This study aims to find how the visitation of national parks in Ohio have been affected through the first six months of the pandemic. Visitation statistics were compared from March to August of 2020 to those same months …
Oxidative Stress Analysis Of Placental Tissue In The Rupp Pregnant Rat, Natalie Ganios
Oxidative Stress Analysis Of Placental Tissue In The Rupp Pregnant Rat, Natalie Ganios
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Preeclampsia is a disease associated with a vasoconstrictive phenotype due to disrupted signaling in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) relaxation pathway. The purpose of these studies is to determine the level of oxidative damage that is occurring in the placenta of the reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rat, which serves as a common model for preeclampsia. RUPP and SHAM placenta tissue will be examined for oxidative stress as an indicator of tissue damage associated with the pathologically induced ischemia. Oxidative stress in the placental tissue will be measured by performing the following oxidative stress assays: 8-isoprostane test, TBARS assay, …
Biomarkers Of Sepsis: A Retrospective Approach, Jose M. Roberts
Biomarkers Of Sepsis: A Retrospective Approach, Jose M. Roberts
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Background: Biomarkers are taking the spotlight in becoming the norm for early diagnoses. Sepsis is an inflammatory disease that increases metabolic rate in children. The first biomarker is hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a frequent electrolyte imbalance in clinical practice, often observed in children with inflammatory disease and infection. Presence of hyponatremia is associated with electrical signaling imbalances, inflammation and renal dysfunction. The clinical value of hyponatremia in pediatric patients is unknown. The C-reactive protein is a second biomarker. Its presence signifies that necrotic cells and inflammation are present.
Objectives: To evaluate the use of biomarkers in children seen in the Emergency …
Factors Affecting Injury History And Their Overall Impact On Athletic Performance In Distance Runners, Trevor Norris
Factors Affecting Injury History And Their Overall Impact On Athletic Performance In Distance Runners, Trevor Norris
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Distance running is a very precise mechanism of many intricate movements and abilities of the body. The amount of miles that a distance runner must run puts a lot of very intense stresses on one’s body. These stresses often appear at the bone level and lead to many injuries such as stress reactions and stress fractures but also may play important roles in tissue damages such as strains and pulls. In this study, we used division one college distance runners and examined many intricacies between their level of fitness and overall composition. These include looking at imbalances, dominant traits, and …
Preliminary Nutritional Profile Analysis Of Box Tops 4 Education Food Products, Hannah Griffith
Preliminary Nutritional Profile Analysis Of Box Tops 4 Education Food Products, Hannah Griffith
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The marketing of unhealthy food to children is often cited as a cause of the obesity epidemic.1 However, most studies that examine this issue evaluated the marketing of food through print or television advertising. This project investigates the marketing of food products to children through incentive based programs, specifically General Mill’s Box Tops 4 Education. This study undertakes a preliminary systematic analysis of Box Tops food items to determine their healthfulness. A subset of all Box Tops food products was selected for review and a basic quantitative content analysis of priority nutrients was performed. Priority nutrients were identified …
