Problem. Pediatric mental health complaints and subsequent hospitalizations have been steadily increasing. The Behavioral Health Network (BHN) developed an intensive outreach case management program aimed at reducing youth mental health emergency department (ED) visits and inpatient psychiatric admissions. The Youth Emergency Room Enhancement (YERE) program was a process improvement initiative to provide immediate case management to youth and caregivers for mental health care.

This paper serves to inform nurses of the medical and psychiatric treatment that inmates with mental illness receive and to offer suggestions for treatment interventions. Current practice includes mental health screens, psychotropic medication administration, psychiatric departments, and administrative segregation. The recommended interventions include providing therapy (including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Group Therapy), decreasing administrative segregation, implementing reintegration programs, and training and collaborating with correctional officers.

Teachers are with their students an average of seven to 10 hours a day, five days a week. The substantial amount of time teachers spend with their students allows them to provide helpful insight into health problems children face. The purpose of this study was to identify elementary school teachers’ concerns for student health and to assess their knowledge of resources that address those health concerns. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to implement an improved standard of care for patients in acute opiate withdrawal in 6 correctional facilities using available evidence-based practice.

Methods: A comprehensive literature review of non-opiate interventions for acute opiate withdrawal (AOW) confirmed that clonidine effectively treats the objective symptoms, with lower risk for abuse and diversion. Additional supportive measures for AOW included hydroxyzine (Vistaril/Atarax), acetaminophen, and loperamide. Using these findings, a new medication protocol was formulated in partnership with the state medical director, the Department of Corrections, and the state director of nursing. Depression is one of the leading causes of disease and disability, often found in patients with long-term chronic physical conditions such as diabetes. Collaborative care, which includes care managers, has shown to improve depression outcomes in patients; usual care has been shown to be inadequate. This quality improvement project screened patients with diabetes for depression. Patients with an elevated depression screening score were provided care management support and rescreened every two weeks to evaluate depression symptoms.
