Preventing hospital-onset bacteremia (HOB) is a healthcare priority given its association with increased morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospitalization, and healthcare costs. Literature identifies inconsistent adherence to evidence-based practices for chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing and peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) maintenance as a modifiable risk factor for HOB. This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated whether implementing standardized nurse education, routine compliance audits, and performance feedback would improve adherence to evidence-based CHG bathing and PIVC maintenance practices. Background

Building capacity of health professional educators in low- and middle-income countries can improve population health outcomes through upskilling the health workforce. However, education programs must respond to local contexts and challenges including participants’ needs and expectations, language difficulties, and resource limitations. This paper evaluates a program for nursing and community health worker educators in Papua New Guinea.

Methods

This qualitative descriptive study was designed and implemented using a collaborative partnership approach. It comprised six focus groups with 26 educators who were program participants. Thematic analysis examined participants’ perceptions of the program and their implementation of change projects.

Problem: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) contribute to increased morbidity, extended hospitals stay, and significant healthcare costs. At the project site in northwest, Indiana, HAPI rates averaged 6.29%, which significantly higher than the national benchmark of 2.24%. Inconsistencies in documentation, a lack of standardized preventive practices, and variable staff engagement contributed to these increased rates. Background: This project focused on implementation of clostridium difficile (C. diff) education sessions at Hospital A, a not-for-profit, short-term, acute care hospital serving the Greater Sacramento community. It comprises of 241 staffed beds in the medical-surgical, telemetry, and intensive care units.

Problem: My Clinical Nurse Leader project focused on preventing hospital-acquired C. diff. At Hospital A, there were 19 hospital-acquired C. diff cases for the 2022 performance year. Of the 19 clostridium difficile cases, 12 were related to C. diff testing criteria fall-outs.

An eight-hour education course was developed by experts in the field of lung transplantation. A pretest was administered before the education course.
