Body Dysmorphia Screening Tool For Aesthetic Treatments, Brandi Harper Nov 2023

Body Dysmorphia Screening Tool For Aesthetic Treatments, Brandi Harper

MSN Capstone Projects

This evidence-based project includes a discussion of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) or body image disturbance as part of pre-treatment screening in medical facilities providing appearance-altering procedures and aesthetic treatments to adult patients. The information provided serves as the foundation for endorsing the adoption of a BDD screening tool into clinical practice to increase the identification of body dysmorphia, thereby facilitating proper referral, diagnosis, and treatment to aid in patient safety and satisfaction and limit medico-legal imputations. The discussion presented here is supported by evidence-based research. It focuses on BDD prevalence and significance amongst adult patients and highlights validated screening tools …

Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto Oct 2023

Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto

Doctoral Projects

Medication nonadherence (MNA) is a major contributor to hospitalizations and accounts for billions of dollars spent every year on health care. Despite medications being prescribed in nearly 75% of healthcare interactions, it is estimated that 33 to 50% of Americans do not take their medications as prescribed, if at all (Bartlett Ellis et al., 2020; Kleinsinger, 2018). The COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior) Model used in this DNP project suggests that an individual must have the capability, opportunity, and motivation to enact a certain behavior, and should any of these areas be lacking, the behavior is unlikely to occur. This …

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Diabetic Screening Tool In Rural Belizean Communities, Morgan Lee Taylor, Annelyse Caffrey Jul 2023

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Diabetic Screening Tool In Rural Belizean Communities, Morgan Lee Taylor, Annelyse Caffrey

Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Significance/Background: Type II Diabetes Mellitus (TIIDM) is a growing epidemic in Belize. The prevalence is increasing yearly, responsible for considerable health complications and deaths. Rates are much higher in Belize than in any other developing Central American country, and many rural citizens are undiagnosed and untreated. Access to healthcare is complex, and travel is often required in rural areas. Primary care visits in Belize are significantly less than in surrounding North and Central American countries. As a result, chronic illnesses such as TIIDM often go undiagnosed among children, adolescents, and adults- leaving TIIDM a leading cause of death in Belize. …

Implementation Of An Evidenced Based Peripheral Artery Disease Screening Protocol In An Outpatient Internal Medicine Clinic, Sarah Lee Bolanos May 2023

Implementation Of An Evidenced Based Peripheral Artery Disease Screening Protocol In An Outpatient Internal Medicine Clinic, Sarah Lee Bolanos

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Purpose: The purpose of this evidenced based project was to implement an evidenced based peripheral artery disease screening protocol in an outpatient internal medicine clinic serving adult patients with multiple co-morbidities. This clinic inconsistently screened patients for PAD using the ankle-brachial index (ABI).

Methods: During a three-month period, 50 patients were screened using current American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) screening guidelines for PAD using the Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) and the Edinburgh Claudication Questionnaire (ECQ).

Results: Out of the 50 patients screened for PAD, only one patient (2%) had a normal ABI score (1.0-1.4) and was categorized …

Implementing Outpatient Screening Of Adult Patients At High Risk For Peripheral Artery Disease, Coral Roseberry May 2023

Implementing Outpatient Screening Of Adult Patients At High Risk For Peripheral Artery Disease, Coral Roseberry

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a prevalent chronic vascular disease that remains often underdiagnosed and inadequately treated. The development of PAD increases both with age and with the presence of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Risk factors for PAD include smoking, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and chronic kidney disease. Furthermore, PAD can be an indicator of systemic atherosclerosis which is associated with coronary artery disease, carotid stenosis, and cerebrovascular disease. Undiagnosed obstructive PAD contributes to damaging atherosclerotic sequelae such as claudication, ulcers, infections, peripheral neuropathy, and amputations. It is common for PAD to exist in the absence of symptoms; therefore, …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most common bloodborne infection in the United States (Ludden et al., 2022). Sadly, over half of the individuals living with chronic HCV are unaware of their condition (Halket et al., 2022). Due to rising numbers, HCV screening guidelines have been updated to recommend that every adult be screened at least once (Patel et al, 2021). Despite these guidelines, screening rates remain low. This scoping review aims to examine current research on HCV screening and strategies to improve early diagnosis and treatment.

Methods

This review began with a literature search using CINAHL and PubMed …

Screening For Social Determinants Of Health In The Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Winifred Ann Shouse Mar 2023

Screening For Social Determinants Of Health In The Primary Care Setting: A Quality Improvement Project, Winifred Ann Shouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which individuals are born, age, work, and live that affect health status and outcomes (Rivich et al., 2019). These social and environmental factors can create barriers to patients being able to access and adhere to recommendations for chronic disease management (Gold, et al., 2019). Communication gaps between patients and primary care providers make it challenging for healthcare providers to be completely aware of the financial burdens their patients encounter (Patel et al., 2016). Research supports that identifying and addressing the barriers related to social determinants of health can improve the management of …

Improving Hepatitis C Virus Screening Through Bundle Interventions, Jennifer West Jan 2023

Improving Hepatitis C Virus Screening Through Bundle Interventions, Jennifer West

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Hepatitis C (HCV) is estimated to impact 57,500 people in the US and is a leading infectious disease worldwide. The purpose of this DNP Project is to increase provider confidence in screening, early detection rates and ultimately timely treatment for patients at risk for HCV served within a rural Federal Qualified Health center (FQHC).

Interventions for this project included bundle steps consisting of provider and staff training of Hepatitis C guidelines for screening, use of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) HCV flowsheet and lab template, revision of preventative health form, and self-efficacy survey to evaluate provider and nursing confidence …
