The Impact Of An Evidence-Based Multi-Component Intervention On Colorectal Cancer Screening In Primary Care At A Healthcare System, Ahnnya Slaughter
The Impact Of An Evidence-Based Multi-Component Intervention On Colorectal Cancer Screening In Primary Care At A Healthcare System, Ahnnya Slaughter
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States; many of the deaths are preventable with early detection. Adherence rates for colorectal cancer screening with fecal immunochemical test kits (FIT) was below the national benchmark at this facility.
PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: Among veterans 50 – 75 years old requiring average risk colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) seen in primary care at a veterans affairs healthcare system facility (P), how does the use of a multi-component intervention (I), compared to the usual care (C), affect the number of …
Impact Of Social Isolation In Hiv-Positive Individuals During A Pandemic, Corina Jane Bakoylis
Impact Of Social Isolation In Hiv-Positive Individuals During A Pandemic, Corina Jane Bakoylis
Dissertations
Problem: The global pandemic of COVID-19 caused concern for immunocompromised individuals. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of social isolation on feelings of loneliness, depression, and social isolation experiences in HIV-positive individuals residing in a long-term care facility.
Methods: A mixed-method convergent design with a purposeful sample of HIV-positive adult residents residing in a long-term care facility was utilized. An evaluation of loneliness using the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale (Version 3) and depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) were completed. Personal experiences were also assessed with five predetermined open-ended …
Improving Skin Cancer Screening In Primary Care, Jaclyn Barnhouse, Rebecca Baietto
Improving Skin Cancer Screening In Primary Care, Jaclyn Barnhouse, Rebecca Baietto
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States, with melanoma having the highest rate of mortality of all forms of skin cancer (CDC, 2019). However, there is hesitancy among primary care providers to perform skin cancer screenings (Oliveria et al., 2011). Prevention and early detection of melanoma is key. Melanoma has been known to be highly curable when found early. This makes early detection even more important in order to prevent metastasis and potential mortality (Bruce et al, 2017). The use of targeted screening tools can potentially save lives when utilized in primary …
Keeping Primary Care Providers Informed About Detecting Skin Cancer In Young Adults, Riley J. Spears
Keeping Primary Care Providers Informed About Detecting Skin Cancer In Young Adults, Riley J. Spears
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Skin cancer is a common, life-threatening disease that affects anyone, regardless of age or skin color (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2020). The incidence of melanoma is on the rise for young adults, with an estimated 2,400 new cases for individuals aged 15 to 29 (ACS, 2020). Although skin cancer is highly preventable, clinical guidelines are inconsistent regarding skin cancer screening. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if the implementation of the INternet curriculum FOR Melanoma Early Detection (INFORMED) program would improve primary care providers’ (PCPs’) confidence about skin cancer and the number of completed and …
Improving Adolescent Risk Assessment And Provider Follow-Up In Primary Care, Darby R. Disselkoen
Improving Adolescent Risk Assessment And Provider Follow-Up In Primary Care, Darby R. Disselkoen
Doctoral Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve preventive care for adolescent patients by implementing standardized, routine screening for risk-taking behaviors and improving provider response to identified risks using the Rapid Assessment for Adolescent Preventive Services tool and resources for providers to reference during discussions about risk.
Methods: Quality improvement methodology was utilized at a midwestern pediatric primary care office to implement a practice workflow for staff to follow during annual, adolescent wellchild exams beginning at age thirteen.
Results: Analysis of project results demonstrated a significant increase in routine screening for adolescent risk behaviors compared to the …
Marijuana Vaping In Adolescents: Evaluating Provider Knowledge And Practices To Improve Screening And Referral To Treatment, Holly T. Whitcomb
Marijuana Vaping In Adolescents: Evaluating Provider Knowledge And Practices To Improve Screening And Referral To Treatment, Holly T. Whitcomb
College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications
Background: Vaping is a public health epidemic. Adolescents are using cannabis electronic vapor products at increasing rates. In teens, rising E-cigarette and vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) intoxication and addiction are concerning. Primary care providers are in a unique position to screen and discourage adolescents from vaping, yet barriers to screening and referral to treatment exist.
Objective: This project provided education on vaping trends, Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), and Screening to Brief Intervention (S2BI) with the goal of improving screening and brief intervention of at-risk adolescents among primary care providers.
Methods: The …

Routine Screening For Binge Eating Disorder In Primary Care, Chantel B. Tousignant, Rn, Dnpc, Jennifer Laurent, Ph.D., Aprn
College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications
Background: Estimated prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) in the United States is 2- 3%, and 5% in the primary care setting. BED is associated with multiple comorbidities and is therefore a public health concern. Effective strategies to improve screening, diagnosis and management exist, but are underutilized. This project aimed to enhance BED screening and diagnosis while optimizing disease management. Methods: Routine screening for BED was completed using the 7-Item Binge Eating Disorder Screener. Patients were screened regardless of visit type and follow-up was offered to those screening positive. BED prevalence was assessed pre and post-implementation. Surveys were used to …
