Pain Management: A Flowsheet For Providers, Lisa Swezey
Pain Management: A Flowsheet For Providers, Lisa Swezey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many different factors led to the trend of providers prescribing opioids for chronic pain. However, the misuse of and many deaths related to opioid prescriptions have caused the trend to reverse its direction. National organizations call for providers to stay clear of opioid medication and increase the use of nonpharmacological pain management, but also to treat pain adequately. There are still many barriers to decreasing the use of opioids and increasing the use of nonpharmacological methods. This scholarly project hoped to use an educational flowsheet to assist providers in meeting the demands from national organizations to decrease the use of …
Knowledge And Attitude Of Nurses In A New Rn Graduate Residency Program Regarding Pain Management, Kathryn Lee Wampole
Knowledge And Attitude Of Nurses In A New Rn Graduate Residency Program Regarding Pain Management, Kathryn Lee Wampole
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Most people have encountered pain at some point in their lives. It is a very common complaint nurses hear from patients. When assessing patients, nurses are taught to take what the patient says as his or her pain level as fact. Pain is not a vital sign that can be measured with medical equipment like temperature or blood pressure. Therefore, many nurses find assessing pain challenging. Adding to the complexity of pain management is the current opioid crisis. To help combat some of these issues, the project leader worked with healthcare administrators at a regional teaching hospital in the southeastern …

Improving Pediatric Oral-Systemic Health Through Motivational Interviewing: An Interprofessional Training Intervention, Oksana Prodan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Introduction: In response to the prevalence of early childhood carries (ECC) in the United States, recommendations were established for pediatric primary care providers to routinely incorporate oral-systemic health promotion services into clinical practice. An interprofessional education project was developed between Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and dentistry students in San Francisco to assist trainees in the effective delivery of oral systemic health promotion services. Improving health promotion communication skills was identified as an area of need for both sets of learners. Therefore, the IPE activity was designed to incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) into the training along with pediatric oral …
Implementation Of A Screening Protocol To Improve Provider Assessment Of Depression In Patients With Psoriasis, Marlee Bryant
Implementation Of A Screening Protocol To Improve Provider Assessment Of Depression In Patients With Psoriasis, Marlee Bryant
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Patients with psoriasis are at an increased risk for depression. Despite this risk, many dermatology care providers do not screen for depression in practice, including providers at the target practice for this project. This evidence-based practice pilot project was purposed to increase dermatology providers’ assessment of depression in patients with psoriasis. This project involved implementing a depression screening protocol at one private dermatology practice and educating providers on the use of the protocol including the embedded depression screening tool, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The project leader used a quasi-experimental design and collected data utilizing retrospective chart reviews completed pre- and …

Using A Kindle To Improve Parental Perceptions Of Pain In Their Children: A Dnp Scholarly Project, Andrew Gearhart
DNP Scholarly Projects
Patient satisfaction is an important goal for health care providers, as it is associated with treatment success, and patients are more likely to adhere to medical treatments when they are satisfied. Emergency departments are among the lowest ranked healthcare settings nationwide in terms of patient satisfaction. Pediatric patients often experience pain and/or anxiety while in the hospital setting and are at an increased risk of having unpleasant experiences while receiving care. The purpose of this DNP scholarly project is to determine whether the introduction of a Kindle Fire tablet was effective in decreasing parental perceptions of pain while their child …
Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Reduction For College Students, Mary Kathryn Dowling
Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Reduction For College Students, Mary Kathryn Dowling
Doctoral Projects
University students have been assessed through many sexual health lenses, but there is a paucity of research on the sexual health of community college students. This population may provide good access to at-risk youth, and opportunity to reverse steep climbs in sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates. This research project pilot tests a theory-based intervention employing social facilitation to reduce STI risk among college students. Fifty students were recruited from Human Sexuality courses to participate in a 60-minute workshop. Pre- and post-testing measured for change in STI knowledge, attitude towards safer sex, and self-efficacy for engaging in safer sex practices.

An Exploration Of Barriers To Health Care Access Among Uninsured Patients: Using The Moderating Effect Of Patients’ Enablement, Enedelia L. Jessup
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT On March 23, 2010, Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) to increase value of care, improve clinical outcomes, decrease health care costs, and increase affordability in health care access. The purpose of the study attempts to examine the moderating effects of patient enablement impacting barriers, low socio economic status, and unmet basic needs, toward health care access in uninsured populations post ACA. Only certain aspects of patient enablement in self-management of an individual’s health care goals have been conducted with uninsured populations with barriers toward health care access. The research design was a quantitative, exploratory, …

The evidence indicates that TH also: provides clinical benefits in high-risk patients1, improves glucose control2, improves quality of life and reduces ED visits and hospitalizations for patients with COPD3, enables self-care of patients with heart failure4, reduces risk of admission for patients with asthma5, improves medication adherence6, results in potential cost savings7, and provides …
Evaluating Impedance Monitoring To Reduce Hospital Readmissions For Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: An Integrative Review, Abigail Newton
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Congestive Heart Failure (HF) is a chronic progressive cardiac disorder with high mortality rates and is the number one reason for hospital readmission in the United States. More than 5 million Americans live with HF with more than 900,000 new diagnoses annually. The likelihood of developing HF increases with age making it the most common primary diagnosis for patients over age 65. HF has a significant impact on quality of life, with depression being a common comorbid condition. Thoracic impedance monitoring has shown to reduce exacerbations and hospitalizations in patients with HF. This project evaluated the literature related to impedance …

The Effects Of Hormone Replacement Therapy (Hrt) On Surgically Postmenopausal Women: A Review Of The Literature, Leslie M. Hertweck
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The primary purpose of this research was to examine the effects of HRT in women with acute estrogen deficiency from surgically induced menopause. The secondary purpose was to evaluate how HRT improves symptoms of acute estrogen deficiency and quality of life (QOL) in women using hormone supplementation. Peer reviewed articles published from 2000 to 2017 that were written in the English language with a focus on the use of HRT in women with acute estrogen deficiency after surgical menopause were evaluated for relevance. Evidence suggests the primary reason for decreased use of HRT is the associated risks outweighing the benefits; …

Exploring What It Is Like To Be An Undocumented Alien In Seek Of Healthcare, Eliany C. Torrez Pon
Exploring What It Is Like To Be An Undocumented Alien In Seek Of Healthcare, Eliany C. Torrez Pon
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Currently, there are about 11.8 million undocumented aliens in the United States who are not eligible for public insurance or any type of private coverage obtained through the American Health Care Act of 2017. This creates barriers to healthcare for this large population and has negative implications for the healthcare system. Despite the availability of clinics and low-cost healthcare, this group tends to underuse resources or seek healthcare for emergencies only which leads to increased cost totaling approximately $1.1 billion a year. The goal of this qualitative study is to better understand what it is like to be an undocumented …
