Intrauterine exposure to nicotine is one of the largest modifiable risk factors for infant morbidity and mortality. Previous progress toward decreasing the number impacted by intrauterine nicotine exposure has recently plateaued. While guidelines for assisting pregnant women to stop smoking are available, few providers have a formalized protocol in place. This project will evaluate most current research evidence regarding smoking cessation during pregnancy in order to develop a formalized protocol for implementation in an obstetric clinic in Southwest Ohio.
