As pediatric visits to community hospitals increase, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Pediatric Emergency Care Network (PECARN) recommend that staff be provided improved education, protocols, and resources to improve patient outcomes (Emergency Medical Services for Children, n.d.). Acute respiratory disorders are the most commonly seen complaints in children aged 0–24 months, with an average of 2–4 visits a year.
