Statement of problem While the 2010 report “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” proposes that nurses work collaboratively with other health care professionals, relatively little has been published on the use of simulation to achieve this goal in nursing and other disciplines. Student ratings of and interprofessional simulation and its effect on collaboration with other disciplines will provide valuable information on ways to improve interprofessional simulations.

Hypotheses

  1. Students’ self-ratings of confidence for patient care will improve from beginning to end of the simulation.

Effective goal setting involves collaboration between the client and therapist and is an important component of occupational therapy practice. However, encouraging involvement and collaboration does not necessarily guarantee that client goals are incorporated into the treatment plan. The purpose of this innovative treatment program was to determine if providing a client with a venue for goal identification, documentation, and maintenance might impact participation and satisfaction in a day rehabilitation setting. Graduates of bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) programs are increasingly expected to take an active role in assessing and improving nursing practice, and nurse educators are expected to prepare BSN students for this expanding role. Information literacy, the ability to search for, find, get, and use scholarly information to inform nursing practice, should be a critical component of nursing education. Medical emergencies are stresstul and anxiety producing situations that require quick and precise action. As first responders in the hospital setting, nurses are often responsible for initiating resuscitative efforts until additional help arrives. This study explores the role of instructional design in the development of shared epistemic agency (SEA) when RN to BSN nursing students collaborate to complete a team project in an online course. Paavola & Hakkarainen's (2005) trialogical model of learning is used to design a learning activity where teams create a shared knowledge object, a co-authored patient interprofessional care plan to support group knowledge creation. Healthcare in the United States is fragmented and costly. Care coordination positively impacts healthcare cost and quality in healthcare systems. Case managers, social workers, and community health workers create health care teams in a health care home model. A team approach, formed by relationships built from collaboration, communication, and application of Complexity Theory, produces these outcomes. Relational coordination based on shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect creates the framework from which to establish a team.
