Challenges of engaging students on real world culturally sensitive topics in a general education transcultural course are the essence of this presentation. Strategies used to create a safe environment in which students are free to state beliefs and opinions also hold students accountable to listen and respect other viewpoints. To this end, utilization of ground rules on civility, evidence-based teaching principles, and classroom assessment findings will be explored in relation to selection of teaching methods.

Women of the poor community of Cien Fuegos, Dominican Republic often use folklore or self-treatment for symptoms of vaginitis. Based on assessment of women in Cien Fuegos, an education program was developed called Respect Yourself, Protect Yourself. The need to increase empowerment and self respect was clearly evident for the women of this community. The program focuses on issues of vaginal hygiene, vaginitis, sexually transmitted infections and women's rights and self-protection. To provide sustainable education, the module will be sent to Cien Fuegos and implemented by local health providers.

The concept of grief in this context is poorly understood and often synonymously used with concepts depression, loss and chronic sorrow. In the US, the core concept grief has been recently revised by both NANDA and the DSM-V in efforts to better understand and characterize the concept. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are community based centers created to provide comprehensive primary and preventive care to individuals unable to access care in the commercial medical system (e.g. related to poverty, and/or race-ethnicity). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) proposes offering Medicaid coverage to many such individuals, thus, FQHCs should receive many new Medicaid enrollees. The ACA has triggered a number of new ideas to improve affordability, health status and patient experience, commonly known as the “triple aim.” These initiatives include quality incentive programs, payment reform, and the promotion of medical homes and accountable care organizations (ACOs). The importance of regular physical activity to overall health has been well established, yet adults in the United States are leading increasingly sedentary lives. Research suggests that lowering perceived barriers to exercise is an effective strategy for encouraging physical activity. This article describes the top barriers that emerged from a qualitative analysis of message board traffic from a three-month healthy lifestyle intervention that promoted physical activity and healthy eating. The findings further elaborate known barriers to physical activity-two of which are not reported as key barriers in prior research-and illustrate the value of a grounded approach to studying health and …

In this paper we describe findings from two studies aimed at understanding how health monitoring technology affects the parent-child relationship, examining emotional response and barriers to using this type of technology. We present suggestions for the design of health monitoring technology intended to enhance self-care in children without creating parent-child conflict. Our recommendations integrate the study findings, developmental stage specific concerns, and prior HCI research aimed at children’s health.

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to evaluate how the use of a pervasive blood glucose monitoring (BGM) technology relates to glycemic control, report of self-care behavior, and emotional response to BGM of children with type 1 diabetes and their parents. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Forty-eight children aged less than 12 years (mean 8.8 years) with type 1 diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two study groups, a control group (conventional care without technology) or an experimental group (conventional care with technology), and followed for 12 months. Researchers at a mid-sized, Midwest, faith-based university used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest posttest design to gather data from newly enrolled nursing students in a baccalaureate, masters and doctorate in nursing practice program. Literature regarding confidence levels, self-efficacy and information literacy skills was reviewed. Specific tools to assess confidence and self-efficacy of information literacy skills were explored. The 28-item Information Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale (ILSES) developed in 2006 by Serap Kurbanoglu was used in fall 2012, spring 2013 and fall 2013 to gather data from over 200 newly enrolled nursing students.
