Commercial Medical Transportation - The Better Alternative To Air Ambulance, Jime Carlo Nov 2013

Commercial Medical Transportation - The Better Alternative To Air Ambulance, Jime Carlo

Jime Carlo

From a patient's perspective, when there are at least a few days to make arrangements, commercial travel is a viable [and often superior] and cost effective alternative to air ambulance transport. When all the necessary pre-planning, clearances and pre-arranging are done by a third party, and there is a medical escort to navigate the logistics of travel and provide in-flight medical care, the entire transport experience is usually more positive for patients choosing commercial medical transport over a traditional air ambulance.

Sources Of Uncertainty And Their Association With Medical Decision Making: Exploring Mechanisms In Fanconi Anemia, Jada G. Hamilton, Sadie P. Hutson, Richard P. Moser, Sarah C. Kobrin, Amy E. Frohnmaer, Blanche P. Alter, Paul K.J. Han

Dr. Sadie P. Hutson, PhD, RN

Background

Effects of different sources of medical uncertainty on people’s health-related cognitions, emotions, and decision making have yet to be systematically examined.

Purpose

The aim of this study is to examine how uncertainties arising from different sources are associated with decision making regarding stem cell transplantation in Fanconi anemia, a rare, inherited bone marrow failure syndrome that typically presents during childhood.

Methods

Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 178 parents of 126 Fanconi anemia patients.

Results

Two distinct sources of uncertainty were associated with decision outcomes: probability was associated with a lower likelihood of choosing stem cell transplantation, …

Emotional Intelligence And Spiritual Well-Being Among Nursing Students (Abstract), Audrey Beauvais, Susan Denisco, Julie G. Stewart Apr 2013

Emotional Intelligence And Spiritual Well-Being Among Nursing Students (Abstract), Audrey Beauvais, Susan Denisco, Julie G. Stewart

Julie G. Stewart

Purpose: To examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and spiritual well-being among nursing students. Conclusion and Implications: The significant relationship between emotional intelligence (Branch 4-managing emotions) and spiritual well-being as well as existential well-being in this study supports the statements in the literature that spirituality is related to both emotions and the rational application of those emotions. Emotional intelligence may aid in spiritual development, well-being, and education as emotions are a basis of awareness and engagement within humanity. Research is needed to examine if strategies to enhance emotional intelligence can facilitate the process of increasing spiritual well-being with a test-retest …

The Use Of Motivational Interview Intervention In Discharge Teaching Of Patients With Heart Failure, Jason O'Brien Apr 2013

The Use Of Motivational Interview Intervention In Discharge Teaching Of Patients With Heart Failure, Jason O'Brien

Jason O'Brien

It is widely recognized in healthcare that there are many different behavioral choices a patient can make that can have an impact on their health and disease management outcomes. One of the more prevalent diseases that requires consistent compliance is heart failure. The literature suggests that the different areas of management are often something the layperson in the home can have control over, provided they have the confidence and conviction to do so. There is a call for a new way of teaching these patients upon hospital discharge as the old way of lecturing instruction is not effective. It has …

Background: Fanconi anaemia (FA) is a rare genetic disorder associated with bone marrow failure (BMF, congenital anomalies and cancer susceptibility. Stem cell transplantation (SCT) offers a potential cure for BMF or leukaemia, but incurs substantial risks. Little is known about factors influencing SCT decision making.

Objective: The study objective was to explore factors influencing patients' with FA and family members' decision making about SCT.

Prevalence And Predictors Of Patient Adherence To Health Recommendations After Acute Coronary Syndrome: Data For Targeted Interventions?, Wanling Lee Ms Jan 2013

Prevalence And Predictors Of Patient Adherence To Health Recommendations After Acute Coronary Syndrome: Data For Targeted Interventions?, Wanling Lee Ms

Wanling Lee Ms

Background: Poor adherence is a significant nursing and public health concern because it affects patients' quality of life. It compounds the disease burden of the growing coronary heart disease population. Promoting optimal patient adherence to cardiac-health enhancing recommendations by healthcare providers can reduce mortality and morbidity risk after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Aim: This paper sought to examine rates and predictors of patient adherence to health recommendations after ACS. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 210 Malaysian patients using consecutive sampling was conducted in early 2009 at a tertiary teaching hospital. The Medical Outcome Study Specific Adherence Scale (MOSSAS) questionnaire was …

Analysis United Kingdom And United States Healthcare, Joyce K. Kutin Jan 2013

Analysis United Kingdom And United States Healthcare, Joyce K. Kutin

Joyce K Kutin RN, MSN, MOL

United Kingdom and the United States are two dissimilar health systems each having uniquely differing focuses, where the primary differences are a parliamentary verses a republic government application toward the socioeconomic requirements of the populace. The United Kingdom’s National Health Service interprets health care as a public service rather than the commodity. The United States healthcare system is riddled with disparities regarding quality, access and cost. The socioeconomic poor and or homeless are less likely to utilize the healthcare system when compared to others who are more fortunate. Health care systems are facing the same challenges around the world with …

Retention Of New Graduate Gen Y Nurses, Joyce K. Kutin Jan 2013

Retention Of New Graduate Gen Y Nurses, Joyce K. Kutin

Joyce K Kutin RN, MSN, MOL

The purpose of this paper is to review the research of new residency programs on Generation Y retention and the quality implications that influence the organization. General orientation of all nurses upon hire has been the standard practice with preceptoring of senior nurses from the individual units. The process of each unit’s orientation and standards was different without respect to the individual nurse’s experience. Prior to the implementation of the Nurse Residency program for new graduate generation y nurses, the turnover rate within the first year was greater than 50 percent. Health care organizations and their leaders need to anticipate …

Intergrative Review Of Palliative Care In End Stage Heart Failure, Joyce K. Kutin

Joyce K Kutin RN, MSN, MOL

The aim of this integrative literature review is to explore and discuss palliative care placement within the trajectory of heart failure in the end stage process. After an extensive search through 200 peer-reviewed studies published from 2009-2013 in the following databases: CINAHL, Academic Search Elite, Health Source Consumer Source Edition, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, MEDLINE, Academic Collection (EBSCOhost), seven articles meeting the constraints were chosen.. Common themes of these studies concern symptom management, medication administration, and decision-making tools for assessing patient centered needs and future research regarding effective implementation of palliative care integration in end stage heart failure patients. Nurses …

Undergraduate Nursing Students Caring For Cancer Patients: Hermeneutic Phenomenological Insights Of Their Experiences, Andreas Charalambous, Charis P. Kaite Jan 2013

Undergraduate Nursing Students Caring For Cancer Patients: Hermeneutic Phenomenological Insights Of Their Experiences, Andreas Charalambous, Charis P. Kaite

Charis P. Kaite

Background: The care of patients suffering from cancer and especially those facing the death trajectory appears to be complex and demanding not only for student nurses but for professional nurses as well. The educational models often used in nursing require students to face challenging care scenarios, sometimes with minimal or no supervision and guidance. These “worst case scenarios” can be traumatic experiences that can leave the student hopeless and disappointed of themselves and in many cases can “scar” their subsequent professional career. The literature demonstrates that this can be the result of the students’ ill-preparation to care for cancer patients …
