Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness that is common among the nursing home population. Treatment for Alzheimer's disease is usually palliative and consists of using psychotropic medications to control aggressive and agitated behaviors exhibited by its victims. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify behaviors exhibited by Alzheimer's disease patients before and after receiving psychotropic medications. Johnson's Behavioral System Model was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The sample (N = 33) consisted of nursing home residents with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease who were treated with one psychotropic medication. The researcher used chart review to …

Gender Differences In Presenting Symptoms, Treatment, And Outcome In Myocardial Infarction, Alona Dalusung-Angosta

The purposes of this study were to compare the presenting symptoms, treatment, and outcome between men and women with MI. The study sample consisted of 300 patients (N = 300) who were diagnosed with MI in a county hospital in the Southwest area of the United States.

Chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating, and left arm pain were the most common symptoms reported by both genders. Men had more chest pain than their women counterparts (p = .022). No significant difference was found in the cardiac enzyme levels between both genders. Men had more Q wave changes during MI than …

This article describes an international, interdisciplinary, university partnership project to collaborate with health professionals in the city of Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, Romania, to improve the health status of Romanian workers. Academic and service-based public health nurses from the United States used the model of community competence in outlining the nursing aspect of the project. This model guided the assessment, objectives, collaborative activities, and the outcome evaluation of the project. The dimensions of the model (e.g., commitment, self-other awareness, articulateness, conflict accommodation, management of relations with larger society, and leadership) were used within the context of the political and social environment of …

Determinants Of Health Promoting Behaviors In Older Adults, Kay Wallace

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between Health Locus of Control, selected demographic variables, and the Health Promoting Behaviors of Physical Activity and Nutrition in older persons. Pender’s (1996) Health Promotion Model (HPM) was used as the conceptual framework to guide this study.

The sample consisted of 48 subjects, aged 65 years and older, who resided in senior living centers. The subjects were predominantly Caucasian (94%) and female (81%). Research instruments were self-administered questionnaires that consisted of demographic data, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II, and the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale.

The expansive growth of doctoral programs in the United States has necessitated a need to determine demographic attributes of the academic program, characteristics of the students, admission criteria, and curriculum patterns. Seventy-eight doctoral programs were sent a researcher-designed survey and 48 (62 per cent) responded. Results show an increasing shift away from clinical doctorates to the research doctorate, although few differences exist within the research focus of doctoral nursing programs. Consistent with previous reports in the literature, curricula are fairly standard and few differences were noted based on a number of criteria including geographic location, type of degree granted, Carnegie …

การวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงบรรยาย เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยคัดสรร ได้แก่ อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว จำนวนบุตรที่มีชีวิตอยู่ อายุครรภ์ ประวัติการสูญเสียบุตรในอดีต กับอาการวิตกกังวล และซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ รวมทั้งความสามารถในการทำนายอาการวิตกกังวลและซึมเศร้า จากปัจจัยคัดสรร กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ หญิงตั้งครรภ์ซึ่งได้รับการวินิจฉัยจากสูติแพทย์ว่าต้องสิ้นสุด การตั้งครรภ์เพื่อการรักษา เนื่องจากการตั้งครรภ์ไม่มีตัวอ่อน ตัวอ่อนหรือทารกตายในครรภ์ การแท้งค้าง ทารกพิการ หรือมารดาเป็นโรคร้ายแรงที่ไม่สามารถดำเนินการตั้งครรภ์ต่อไปได้ จำนวน 113 ราย ซึ่งมา รับการรักษาที่หอผู้ป่วยสูติกรรม 3 คณะแพทยศาสตร์โรงพยาบาลรามาธิบดี ระหว่างเดือนมกราคม ถึง กันยายน 2542 เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถาม ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ปัจจัยคัดสรรไม่มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการวิตกกังวลภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ แต่อายุ รายได้ครอบครัว อายุครรภ์ มีความสัมพันธ์ กับอาการซึมเศร้า ภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ อายุครรภ์และรายได้ครอบครัว สามารถร่วมกันทำนายอาการซึมเศร้าภายหลังสูญเสียการตั้งครรภ์ได้ร้อยละ 12.9 อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01

Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex produce excessive amount of cortisol or ACTH. Cortisol hormones effect fat, protein and glucose metabolism. Cushing's syndrome caused by, first from benign or malignant tumors of adrenal cortex, second from pituitary, hypothalamus disorder, bronchogenic or lung carcinoma. Third from iatrogenic cause. Purpose: Hispanic mothers tend to over use hospital emergency services and under use primary care providers when seeking health care for their children. In order to change this health care utilization behavior, researchers must understand the barriers to health care perceived by Hispanic mothers. Design: In this non-experimental survey study, a non-probability, purposive sampling of 45 Hispanic mothers at a rural county pediatric clinic were surveyed. Methods: Using the Health Belief Model (HBM) as its framework an 18-item survey examined, barriers to health care, cues to action, subjects' knowledge, family satisfaction, access, and likelihood of action. Testicular cancer (TC) has been determined to be the most common malignancy in men 15 to 34 years of age. An estimated 7,400 new cases of TC will be diagnosed in 1999, and approximately 3 00 men will die this year from TC. Evidence suggests the incidence of TC is on the rise in North America, especially among Caucasian men. However, TC is nearly 100% curable if detected in its early stages.
