Developing Cultural Competency In Anesthesia Through Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Emma To Dec 2018

Developing Cultural Competency In Anesthesia Through Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Emma To

Doctoral Projects

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are the main anesthesia providers in over 70% of rural hospitals providing anesthesia. Each year, over 2,000 student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) graduate and continue as licensed CRNAs. This Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project emphasizes the importance of developing culturally competent providers in anesthesia by promoting early outreach in cultural competence education of SRNAs. Cultural competence is described as possessing characteristics of congruent attitudes, awareness, and conduct that provides and enables effective skills in cross-cultural encounters. Encompassing cultural competency education early in the SRNAs profession may provide valuable lifelong cultural skills that will benefit …

A Comprehensive Reentry Policy For Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists With Substance Use Disorder, Thomas M. Nigro Nov 2018

A Comprehensive Reentry Policy For Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists With Substance Use Disorder, Thomas M. Nigro

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a common problem in anesthesia. While there are policies in place for practicing anesthetists, there are no known studies to date discussing reentry policies specific to the student registered nurse anesthesia (SRNA) population. The purpose of this research study was to describe key stakeholders’ knowledge and perspectives surrounding policies for reentry into academic programs for SRNAs in Illinois with SUD.

The theoretical framework used to drive this research was based off George L. Engel’s Biopsychosocial Theory. The theory examines the biological component of a person’s disease process, the psychological component, and the social component.

Utilizing The Stop-Bang Questionnaire As A Preoperative Assessment Tool In Patients Undergoing Endoscopic Procedures, Emily Randle Oct 2018

Utilizing The Stop-Bang Questionnaire As A Preoperative Assessment Tool In Patients Undergoing Endoscopic Procedures, Emily Randle

Doctoral Projects

In the world of anesthesia, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can cause a conglomeration of post-operative complications. One of the best ways to avoid these complications is to alter one’s anesthetic to accommodate the needs of a patient with OSA. The current issue with altering one’s anesthetic is that a majority of patients with OSA still remain undiagnosed. My project that will showcase just how many patients have undiagnosed OSA.

The goal of this project was to recognize how many patients were at moderate to high risk for OSA. I did this by providing an in-service on OSA and the STOP-Bang …

A Quality Improvement Project To Increase Hand Hygiene Opportunities For Anesthesia Providers, Brad Margherio Sep 2018

A Quality Improvement Project To Increase Hand Hygiene Opportunities For Anesthesia Providers, Brad Margherio

Doctoral Projects

Hand hygiene is considered to be the far more superior method for preventing the spread of bacteria from a patient care provider to the patient (Allegranzi & Pittet, 2009; Rowlands et al., 2014; Tartari & Mamo, 2011). The addition of easily accessible hand hygiene devices to the anesthesia carts in the operating room may help to improve the opportunities for the anesthesia providers to perform hand hygiene. Hand sanitizer devices were placed on each of the eight anesthesia carts located in the surgery department of a rural hospital in south Mississippi. The devices were measured weekly for a two-week period …

Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir Aug 2018

Teaching Links Between Epigenetics And Anesthesia To Anesthesia Providers, Bilanicz Slawomir

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Background

Epigenetics has been proposed as the epicenter of anesthesia research. The epigenetic landscape developed by Waddington reflects that human diversity is likely the result of a myriad of complex interactions between both intracellular and environmental environments, rather than a simple one-to-one protein coding of the genome. A gap in the literature identifies a need to better explore links between epigenetics and anesthesia. No formal educational program on this topic geared toward anesthesia providers was identified based on the comprehensive literature review completed.

Objectives

This study aimed to describe the knowledge of the anesthesia providers including Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists …

Efficacy And Usefulness Of An Educational Video On Safe Medication Handling, Suzanne Butz Anderson Aug 2018

Efficacy And Usefulness Of An Educational Video On Safe Medication Handling, Suzanne Butz Anderson

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Background: Medication errors are a significant and detrimental issue in anesthesia practice and have the potential to have drastic effects for patients, providers, and hospitals; therefore, it is important to determine if an educational video on safe medication handling technique can improve knowledge on safe medication handling. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and perceived usefulness of an investigator-developed educational video on nurse anesthesia trainees’ (NATs) knowledge of safe medication handling.

Methods: A single group pretest-posttest design was used to evaluate actual knowledge and perceived usefulness of safe medication handling video. A convenience sample included …

Post-Operative Nausea And Vomiting In Adults, Kristina Ann Vasnaik Jul 2018

Post-Operative Nausea And Vomiting In Adults, Kristina Ann Vasnaik

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The purpose of this evidence-based poster is to discuss post-operative nausea and vomiting in the adult population undergoing surgery. Post-operative nausea and vomiting is a common concern for patients and providers, a common complication of surgery, and leading cause of unexpected hospital admission of ambulatory care patients. Post-operative nausea and vomiting also increases healthcare costs and causes decreased patient satisfaction as it creates additional discomfort for the surgical patient. The goal of this poster is to discuss common pathophysiology and significance of post-operative nausea and vomiting, signs and symptoms, risk factors for developing post-operative nausea and vomiting, pre-operative/intra-operative/post-operative treatment strategies, …

Malignant Hyperthermia, Ashley Casimir Vasnaik Jul 2018

Malignant Hyperthermia, Ashley Casimir Vasnaik

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), as well as other anesthesia providers and support staff interact with a variety of patients on a day to day basis. These patients come to the hospital to seek help for their medical and surgical ailments. As every patient is different, they can also have a variety of health-related issues, many of which can also impact their anesthetic plan. One of the most difficult issues and or emergent situations that can impact everyone in the operating room is an exacerbation of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH), whether it is anticipated or unanticipated. The task of preventing …

Standardized Patient Handoff Tool, Matthew Marten May 2018

Standardized Patient Handoff Tool, Matthew Marten

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Patient handoffs are defined as the transmission of information and accountability between teams and individuals. These handoffs can be periods of increased risk for the patient and increased errors among anesthesia providers and PACU nurses (Segall et al., 2012). The Joint Commission recommends healthcare providers improve patient handoff as a national goal (Robins & Dai, 2015). The purpose of this nursing doctoral project was to determine if using a standardized patient handoff tool could improve communication and satisfaction between anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and PACU nurses. A review of the current literature supported the need for a standardized patient handoff tool for …

Sugammadex Protocol, Brenna M. Thomas May 2018

Sugammadex Protocol, Brenna M. Thomas

Sugammadex is a new medication used for the reversal of muscle relaxation induced by rocuronium, vecuronium, and pancuronium. Sugammadex is available for use at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL. However, they did not have a protocol regarding the use of this medication. A sugammadex protocol was written for the operating room (OR) staff after a thorough, evidence based literature review was completed. The OR staff included certified registered nurse anesthetists, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and pharmacy. The protocol was implemented and evaluated with a pretest, an educational PowerPoint regarding sugammadex, and a posttest. A paired samples t test was …

Postoperative Delirium Education, Aaron Wede May 2018

Postoperative Delirium Education, Aaron Wede

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Surgical patients, aged 65 and older, comprise the largest surgical population. Increased age correlates with an increased incidence of postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium (POD) can drastically increase healthcare costs, length of hospital stay, and overall morbidity and mortality. A clinical reference tool was created to have available for perioperative staff members at a 200-bed community hospital in the Midwest. The tool describes risk factors, prevention methods, and treatment options for POD. The initial implementation of the project was achieved with a PowerPoint presentation which was created to summarize the information found in the literature review and to instruct perioperative staff …

Predicting Arterial Oxygen Desaturation Events Via Patient Journal And Pulse Oximetry Data In Postoperative Ambulatory Surgery Patients, Charles R. Elam Iv Jan 2018

Predicting Arterial Oxygen Desaturation Events Via Patient Journal And Pulse Oximetry Data In Postoperative Ambulatory Surgery Patients, Charles R. Elam Iv

Theses and Dissertations

Associations between patient and procedural factors on the nature and quality of the immediate in-home recovery from anesthesia following ambulatory orthopedic surgery are unknown. Further, there is a paucity of outcomes research quantitatively categorizing in-home

patient recovery and safety following discharge from same-day orthopedic procedures. Tools are available, however, to shed light on outcomes in this population, and integration of such available measures is critical.

Ambulatory orthopedic surgery is a burgeoning specialty, with growth expected over the foreseeable future. The expected increased patient caseload subsequent to implementation of the Affordable Care Act and aging Baby Boom generation suggests greater morbidity …
