Purpose/Background
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Research has shown that individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk of developing depression in comparison to those of the general population. Depression affects the individual's emotional well-being and has a significant impact on the management and outcomes of diabetes (Mather, 2022). This research study aims to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The PHQ-9 is one the most effective assessment tools available to identify symptoms of depression (Celik, 2020).

Diabetes Mellitus II is a leading cause of death in the United States, imposing a significant healthcare cost. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2020), one out of every ten Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes, with 90 to 95% of them having type 2 diabetes (T2d). Effective management T2d is crucial to prevent clinical complications, expensive medical care, and a diminished quality of life. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to severe medical complications including atherosclerotic cardiac cardiovascular disease, renal disease, and microvascular disease (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2021). The economic burden of diabetes complications amounted to …
Evaluating The Utilization Of A Combination Therapy To Improve Self-Efficacy And Glycemic Control In Patients With Type Two Diabetes Mellitus And Low Health Literacy, Crystal Manus Masling
Evaluating The Utilization Of A Combination Therapy To Improve Self-Efficacy And Glycemic Control In Patients With Type Two Diabetes Mellitus And Low Health Literacy, Crystal Manus Masling
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a significant health issue, as it requires patients to perform daily self-management activities. One in every three Americans with Type 2 diabetes has limited or low health literacy skills. Limited or low health literacy skills can impact a patient’s overall health outcome; therefore, a critical element for disease management and patient adherence is health literacy. The purpose of this three-month scholarly project was to determine if the utilization of an educational intervention specific to one’s level of health literacy, combined with a short message service reinforcement tool, could improve glycemic control and self-efficacy in Type …
The Impact Of Diabetes Mellitus On Burns And Standard Burn Treatments, Emma Shepard
The Impact Of Diabetes Mellitus On Burns And Standard Burn Treatments, Emma Shepard
Senior Honors Theses
Burns are complex injuries that trigger the stress response and result in increased blood glucose. Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine disorder with abnormal glucose regulation, can significantly alter the risk for burns and the treatment of burns. Pre-existing diabetes mellitus complicates burn treatments and healing ability. Diabetes mellitus may also develop directly from an unregulated stress response to the burn. The consideration of diabetes mellitus affects wound care, medications, and nutrition for burn patients. As patient advocates, nurses are responsible for caring for burn patients with awareness of endocrine complications. This paper provides a detailed overview of the pathophysiology, complications, and …
Pediatric Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus: Examining The Upward Trend, Allison Foering
Pediatric Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus: Examining The Upward Trend, Allison Foering
Senior Honors Theses
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in pediatric onset of type II diabetes. This paper will examine elements contributing to this trend. Type II diabetes will be discussed, including related pathophysiology, manifestations, diagnosis, and complications, with differentiation between adult and pediatric onset. Possible prevention and treatment methods appropriate for pediatric patients will also be discussed, along with possible outcomes in pediatric patients that could result from this disease. Overall, this paper will provide insight on the causes of this growing trend, and ways to improve the risks imposed on pediatric patients.

A1c monitoring is an important aspect of controlling the health of a diabetic patient. An adult internal medicine clinic noted that the percentage of their diabetic patients who had an A1c higher than 9 or no reading within the past year exceeded the national average. As a result, operational excellence methods were implemented with the overall goal to reduce their percentage to 18% or less.
A root cause analysis identified several deficiencies to includelack of essential equipment, variations in
staff education and the absence of daily reminders.
Post KPI implementations, an overall decrease in the percentage of patients with poorly …

Objective—Inconclusive findings about infection risks, importantly the use of immunosuppressive medications, in patients who have undergone large-joint total joint arthroplasty challenge efforts to provide evidenced-based perioperative total joint arthroplasty recommendations to improve surgical outcomes. Thus, the aim of this study was to describe risk factors for developing a postoperative infection in patients undergoing TJA of a large joint [total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, or total shoulder arthroplasty] by identifying clinical and demographic factors, including the use of high risk medications (i.e., prednisone and immunosuppressive medications) and diagnoses (i.e., rheumatoid arthritis [RA], osteoarthritis [OA], gout, obesity, diabetes mellitus), that …

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is risk factor for complications after orthopedic surgery.
Objectives: We tested the hypothesis that anesthesia preoperative clinic (APC) referral for elevated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) reduces complication rate after total joint arthroplasty (TJA).
Patients and Methods: Patients (n = 203) with and without DM were chosen from 1,237 patients undergoing TJA during 2006 - 12. Patients evaluated in the APC had surgery in 2006 - 8 regardless of HbA1c (uncontrolled). Those evaluated between in subsequent two-year intervals were referred to primary care for HbA1c ≥ 10% and ≥ 8%, respectively, to improve DM control before surgery. Complications …
