The Journey Through Nursing Doctoral Education: An Inside Story, Nila Reimer

Students who gain new knowledge by integrating scholarliness and stewardship for the nursing profession possess key ambitions for succeeding in nursing doctoral education. In this narrative inquiry, a student reflects on themes of scholarly integration, intellectual community, and stewardship that are embedded in the values and attitudes evidenced in the culture of a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing program. The doctoral student’s personal reflection demonstrates professional growth during the experience of nursing doctoral education. This inquiry provides guidance for other students as they embark on their journey toward scholarly development and stewardship during their doctoral education experience.

Background It is well known that quality of care in nursing homes has been an unrelenting concern; however, plans for major improvements are evolving. A move toward care for residents where residents are respected and heard is finally emerging. Although the focus on resident-centered care is currently recognized, meaningful care from residents’ perceptions deserves further examination. A move toward care of residents in nursing homes where they are respected and heard is finally emerging. While a focus on individualizing care for residents is now recognized, research reveals there remains a lack of understanding about what befitting care is for these residents. Two common strategies used in an attempt to determine what is meaningful for residents in nursing homes include measuring their responses to satisfaction surveys and implementing person-centered care.
