Medical-surgical nurses are consumed by providing care to patients and families and often forget to care for themselves. Compassion fatigue can lead to lack of caring for one’s self in the nurse’s life. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the existence of compassion fatigue among medical-surgical nurses and determine the correlation between the range of years of nursing experience and range of age in years. A review of the literature has identified that nurses should practice self-care to combat compassion fatigue. The theoretical framework was based on Jean Watson’s Theory of Transpersonal Caring. Stress is an issue of concern in nursing practice and nursing education. Stress leads to burn out and compassion fatigue in the nurse and student nurse. To combat stress, professional organizations advocate for self-care practices. Research indicates self-care practice can reduce stress levels and increase health and wellness. An evidenced-based DNP project was conducted over a seven-week time frame during a mental health nursing course to educate senior BSN students on different dimensions of self-care to reduce stress levels and increase use of self-care practices.

The purpose of this thesis project was to explore levels of compassion fatigue in emergency department nurses. Compassion fatigue has directly affected many nurses’ lives as well as impacting the field of nursing in various ways. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is a prevalent condition among the elderly population in the United States. ESRD is the most feared stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD), as it is a terminal diagnosis requiring long-term management. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the most common method of home-dialysis treatment for individuals with ESRD. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a diabetes education program on self-efficacy and readmission rates of diabetic patients. All participants were recruited based on their current enrollment with one of the largest primary care physician's practices in the Southeastern United States. Qualifying criteria included the diagnosis of being either diabetic type I or II and commitment to attend a five-week diabetes educational workshop.
