The purpose of this study was to explore job satisfaction and retention of front line nurse managers. Retention of nurses in the workplace is a primary focus of health care systems. Helen Erickson, Evelyn Tomlin, and Mary Ann Swain’s Theory of Modeling and Role Modeling served as the theoretical framework for this study. The literature shows that there is prevalence of nurse manager job satisfaction and retention. New graduate registered nurse residency programs are being adopted as best practice by many organizations. The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different types of programs implemented at an organization to see which produced the largest amount of retention. One group was hired directly into a nursing unit or area where orientation began. Another group was hired into a practice area and rotated through three different areas prior to being matched to a unit or area and then completing orientation. Aim. To identify factors that affect hospice nurses’ intent to remain employed. Background. Recent literature indicates that turnover is a major problem for health care organizations, since it is costly and negatively affects patient care. Several strategies have been highlighted to help improve retention rates, however hospice nurses have special needs. Methods. To assess hospice nurse perspectives, a survey was conducted using registered nurses working in a multi-county Hospice and Palliative Care facility in the southeastern U.S. Survey items were based on information gathered from previous focus groups exploring determinants of nurse retention. This research project embarked upon an investigation related to the retention of nurses at a small hospital in the Southeastern United States. The research question that guided this study asked, `what were the factors affecting nurse satisfaction at this health care facility? Many variables were explored as answers sought through surveys and documented reviews emerged.
