In many clinical settings, nurses have a vital role in pain assessment and titration of opioid doses. Surveys of nurses have revealed knowledge deficits in these areas that are thought to contribute to under-treatment of pain. The present study surveys nurses' knowledge and attitudes about assessment and treatment of pain and confirms that nurses continue to undertreat pain. As shown in previous studies, nurses may be more influenced by the patient's behavior than the patient's self-report of pain, especially in relation to decisions about opioid administration. This study was completed to help determine if nurses had a true understanding of how to provide pain management to patients in their care who were at the end of their life. A review of literature was completed and it revealed that nurses have a fear of opioid overdose and respiratory depression in their patients when providing proper pain management. The hospice philosophy is based on pain and symptom management, comfort measures, and enhancement of quality of life at end-of-life (EOL). Pain management at EOL requires advanced knowledge and understanding by the healthcare team caring for these patients. It is estimated that seventy-three million patients undergo surgical procedures each year in the United States. Of these, 80% experience acute post-operative pain, and approximately 20% experience severe pain (Hutchinson, 2007). Benner's Theory from Novice to Expert was used to guide the study, "Evaluating the Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Pain Management Among Nurses in a Surgical Setting at an Acute Care Facility". A convenience sample of twenty-one nurses in an acute care hospital in Southwestern North Carolina participated in the Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain. The under-treatment of pain is a problematic area for hospitalized patients nationwide. Pain diminishes a person's quality of life and this issue can be of great concern to healthcare personnel. The purpose of this study was to explore nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards pain and pain management. Fifty nurses from various practice areas participated in the survey that included a demographic data form and the Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Pain Management questionnaire.
