Cultivating Confidence: Creating A Flipped Classroom Environment, Hallie H. Barnett

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine if the application of the flipped classroom teaching method versus traditional lecture in new hire hospital nursing orientation played a role in practicing nurses’ self-confidence to competently practice at the patient’s bedside. By exploring two different teaching methods in orientation, a correlation would be determined to recognize self-confidence levels with the nurse’s ability to use policy, procedure, and equipment when responding to a medical emergency in a new facility. The research study was conducted using a convenience sample at a community hospital during nursing orientation which occurred consistently twice per month. …

Nurse Perceptions Of Interactivity During Their Onboarding Orientation: Effect Of An Audience Response System, Angela Perry Wood Jan 2017

Nurse Perceptions Of Interactivity During Their Onboarding Orientation: Effect Of An Audience Response System, Angela Perry Wood

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Nurse educators must use effective teaching-learning tools to orient nurses hired into healthcare organizations. There is a vast amount of literature related to teaching-learning strategies such as audience response systems (ARS) in academia, but little research on ARS use in nursing classes outside of academia. The purpose of this research was to determine nurse perceptions of interactivity during lecture utilizing ARS versus lecture without ARS in an initial onboarding nursing orientation, using constructivism as the theoretical framework. A convenience sample of nurses attending an initial onboarding nursing orientation evaluated a PowerPoint based lecture using an interactivity instrument that included four …

The Correlation Between Satisfaction With Nursing Orientation And The Number Of Preceptors Utilized, Alessia H. Parker Dec 2016

The Correlation Between Satisfaction With Nursing Orientation And The Number Of Preceptors Utilized, Alessia H. Parker

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The satisfaction of new graduate nurses with hospital orientation may impact job satisfaction, retention, and the ability of healthcare facilities to develop proficient nurses. Preceptors are an integral part of nursing orientation and the use of one or multiple preceptors during new graduate nurse orientation is discussed in previous research studies with varying results. Some study participants value using a minimal number of preceptors, while other new graduate nurses enjoy the variety of having multiple preceptors. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the effect of orienting with one or multiple preceptors on the degree of satisfaction with the …

Transitioning Novice Nurses To Expert Nurses In Progressive Telemetry Care, Timothy E. Fraley May 2016

Transitioning Novice Nurses To Expert Nurses In Progressive Telemetry Care, Timothy E. Fraley

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

New nurses do not possess the clinical skills necessary to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing telemetry unit. The study explores the idea that nurses with less than two years’ experience may not have the self-confidence or experience to begin a career on a telemetry unit. A search of the literature was performed to identify the skills needed to be successful in a critical care telemetry unit. Established orientation programs, nurse internships, and nursing experience were the keywords researched. Patricia Benner’s Theory: From Novice to Expert Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice (1984) serves as the foundation for this …

Preceptor Coordinators: The Link Connecting Hospital Orientation And Unit Orientation, Tina S. Hunter Jan 2010

Preceptor Coordinators: The Link Connecting Hospital Orientation And Unit Orientation, Tina S. Hunter

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Orientation is a crucial time for newly hired nurses, both experienced and non-experienced, and this initial training period is a vital function for all healthcare organizations. Being a collaborative process that includes administrators, managers, preceptors, and orientees, formal orientation programs directly influence and are essential in improving staff retention, lowering turnover, increasing productivity and quality patient care, and improving staff morale and job satisfaction. This scholarly project offers a detailed plan for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the preceptor coordinator role, a department-level initiative that links hospital orientation to unit orientation; thus enhancing the overall orientation process.
