The purpose of this evidenced-based project was to answer the question: Does using a formalized discharge list identifying key educational topics regarding the patient’s disease process decrease readmission risk for COPD patients? This study used all COPD patients admitted over a two-week period who consented to receiving one-on-one detailed COPD education (n=33). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of participation in a pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) program on depressions scores in persons with COPD and if there is a difference between males and females in depression scores prior to and following participation in a pulmonary rehabilitation program. The literature review supported multiple factors on how participating in a pulmonary rehabilitation program can have a positive effect on depression scores. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Several studies confirm only 50% of COPD patients receive optimal care. The disease is greatly under-recognized and generally is not diagnosed until it is clinically apparent and moderately advanced. COPD is also a major resource consuming disease.
