Transformational Leadership behaviors are essential to build and sustain a healthy work environment in healthcare. Nurse Managers who possess transformational leadership behaviors lead nursing teams with a higher degree of engagement, work satisfaction, and retention. Nurse Managers have the unenviable responsibility of ensuring that nursing staff are engaged and perform their duties to the best of their abilities. Maintaining an environment conducive to maximizing nurses' potentials resulting in retention may be a by-product of an effective leadership style. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nurse managers' leadership styles have an impact on nurses' intent to turnover. Nurse Managers with more than one year of management experience were asked to complete the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X). This project examined if transformational nurse managers were perceived by their nursing staff as more effective leaders than transactional or passive/avoidant leaders using the Transformational Theory of Leadership through administration of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Form 5X) to nurse unit managers and staff nurses. 80 staff nurses and seven unit nurse managers participated in the study. Unit nurse managers completed the MLQ (Form 5X) about themselves and nursing staff completed the MLQ (Form 5X) about their unit nurse manager.
