Gender Relations In Hospice Palliative Home Care For Clients With Cancer And Their Family Caregivers: A Critical Analysis, Nisha S. Sutherland
Gender Relations In Hospice Palliative Home Care For Clients With Cancer And Their Family Caregivers: A Critical Analysis, Nisha S. Sutherland
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this study was to critically examine gender relations in the sociopolitical context of hospice palliative home care for clients with cancer and their family caregivers. Using a critical feminist lens, I employed critical ethnography as a methodology to uncover taken-for-granted attitudes, beliefs, and practices that shape health and health care experiences within the culture of end-of-life at home. The study addressed the following research questions: (a) How do gender relations shape health and health care experiences within the socio-political context of hospice palliative home care for clients with cancer and their caregivers?; (b) How do gendered processes …
Understanding Women's Health Promotion In Rural Canadian Churches, Robyn Plunkett
Understanding Women's Health Promotion In Rural Canadian Churches, Robyn Plunkett
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Many rural health resources are linked to community churches, which are often well attended, especially by rural women. Thus, the rural church may be an effective health resource for rural Canadian women who have compromised access to health resources. Despite the significant role that the rural church plays in the life of rural communities, there is very limited research that addresses how the church acts or could act as a health resource for rural women. Furthermore, there is limited understanding of how the church as a place may influence health promotion in rural communities. This dissertation explores the relevance of …
Comparison Of Housed And Homeless Patients With An Orthopedic Diagnosis, Susan M. Williams
Comparison Of Housed And Homeless Patients With An Orthopedic Diagnosis, Susan M. Williams
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Studies on homelessness have shown that people who are homeless are admitted to hospital more frequently, for longer periods of time, and at a younger age than people who are housed. Once admitted to hospital, discharge planning is difficult and resource intensive, often leading to discharge back to the streets or a shelter. This puts this population at risk for complications and readmission. Although people who are homeless are prone to orthopedic injuries, there is no research on the outcomes of patients who are homeless with orthopedic injuries. This retrospective, case control study, based on the social determinants of health, …
Learner Anxiety And Professional Practice Self-Efficacy In Nursing Education, Joanna Pierazzo
Learner Anxiety And Professional Practice Self-Efficacy In Nursing Education, Joanna Pierazzo
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this study was to examine the affective component of learner engagement (Linnenbrink & Printrich, 2003); more specifically students’ perceptions of learner anxiety and self-efficacy for professional practice in clinical nursing education. This study identified the factors in clinical learning contexts that contribute to learner anxiety, the differences among these factors in real and simulated learning contexts, and finally, the teaching and learning strategies that minimize learner anxiety and positively enhance self-efficacy for professional nursing practice. A convenience sample of 186 students from three university nursing programs in Ontarioparticipated in a two-phased mixed methods study, reflecting a response …

Exclusive breastfeeding is associated with numerous health benefits for both mother and child, and is recommended for the first 6 months of an infant’s life. The purpose of this prospective study was to examine, using a survey-based design, the breastfeeding practices, self-efficacy, and perceived barriers and facilitators of primiparous mothers in London, Ontario. A total of 71 women (Mage = 30.0, SD = 4.3) participated in the study. Women (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding) were asked to complete online surveys at three time points: < 4 weeks postpartum, 3 months postpartum, and 6 months postpartum. Results indicated that rates of exclusive breastfeeding decreased over time, whereas partial and non-breastfeeding rates increased. Women in the exclusive breastfeeding category reported the greatest levels of breastfeeding self-efficacy at all time points. Lastly, participants identified a number of breastfeeding-related facilitators (e.g., partner support, community services) and barriers (e.g., insufficient milk supply, latching difficulties).
Nursing Clinical Instructor Experiences Of Empowerment In Rwanda: Applying Kanter's And Spreitzer's Theories, Mary E. Thuss
Nursing Clinical Instructor Experiences Of Empowerment In Rwanda: Applying Kanter's And Spreitzer's Theories, Mary E. Thuss
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Clinical instructors (CIs) play a vital role in students’ development by facilitating learning in various health care practice environments. Quality nursing education hinges on the CI’s ability to enact his or her professional role. The purpose of this study was to explore Rwandan nursing clinical instructors’ experiences of structural and psychological empowerment.
A descriptive qualitative method was used to obtain an understanding of CIs empowerment experiences in practice settings. Kanter’s (1993) Theory of Structural Power in Organizations and Spreitzer’s (1995) Psychological Empowerment Theory were used as a conceptual framework to interpret their experiences. Interview data from 21 nursing CIs in …
The Influence Of Resonant Leadership And Structural Empowerment On The Job Satisfaction Of Registered Nurses, Eunice Bawafaa

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract
There are longstanding and growing concerns about the demanding nature of work environments that affect nurses’ health, job satisfaction and provision of quality care. Specifically in healthcare settings, there is the need for leaders to create supportive work environments to avert these negative trends and increase nurse job satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of managers’ resonant leadership and nurses’ structural empowerment on their job satisfaction. A secondary analysis of data collected from a non-experimental survey design using a sample of 1216 registered nurses from nine provinces in Canada was conducted. Structural empowerment partially …
Transitioning To Motherhood After Trauma: Interacting With The Healthcare System, Karen E. Haines
Transitioning To Motherhood After Trauma: Interacting With The Healthcare System, Karen E. Haines
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Little is known about the interactions with the healthcare system among women with past interpersonal trauma accessing maternal health care. The purpose of this study was to critically examine the experiences of women with past interpersonal trauma as they interacted with the healthcare system during the transition to motherhood. A critical feminist perspective informed by Relational-Cultural Theory was used to guide this secondary analysis of 29 interview transcripts from: (a) Aboriginal women, (b) refugees, and (c) survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Four themes emerged: 1. Birthing a healthy baby: the common relational thread; 2. Receiving physical care over the emotional …

A Critical Examination Of The Social Organizations Within Canadian Ngos In The Provision Of Hiv/Aids Health Work In Tanzania, Oona M. St-Amant
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The purpose of this study was to critically examine the social organizations within Canadian non-government organizations (NGOs) in the provision of HIV/AIDS health work in Tanzania. Using a post-Marxist theoretical framework, I employed the tools of institutional ethnography to understand how distinct forms of coordinated work are reproduced and embedded within the institution of Canadian NGOs at the local site of lived experiences.
Multiple, concurrent methods, including text analysis, participant observation and in-depth interviews, were utilized. Data collection occurred over approximately a 19-month period of time in Tanzania and Canada. Interviews were conducted with health work volunteers, NGO administrators and …
