Knowledge & Attitudes Towards Pediatric Pain With Needle-Based Procedures In The Emergency Department Setting, Charlstyn Paige Brown
DNP Projects
PURPOSE: By the time a child enters kindergarten, they may have faced as many as thirty-three vaccine-related injections. Throughout these experiences, parents and patients associated pain and fear regarding the administration of multiple vaccines concurrently to a child has played a role in vaccine hesitancy and refusal. Parents and patients experience associated fear and pain regarding the administration of multiple concurrent scheduled vaccines, thus leading to vaccination hesitancy and refusal. In addition to scheduled immunizations, there is also the possibility of unexpected needle-based procedures taking place when emergencies arise. The purpose of the study is to explore the current …

The Use Of A Pediatric Palliative And Hospice Education Module To Enhance The Knowledge And Practice Of Emergency Room Providers, Morgan Garrett
DNP Projects
Background: Palliative and hospice care resources are underutilized in pediatric patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. One contributing factor is the lack of formalized education for medical providers regarding the differences and scope of palliative and hospice care models. Without adequate education about these services, providers are not able to effectively utilize otherwise available resources to provide holistic care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the current perception of knowledge among providers pertaining to pediatric palliative and hospice care. The study investigated improvements in educational outcomes in ten categories after participation in a web-based training. A secondary …

Increasing Medication Compliance In Pediatric Asthma Patients By Implementing A Home Medication Dosing Chart, Lindsey K. Shader
DNP Projects
Background: There are 6.2 million children under the age of 18 years who have an asthma diagnosis (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Only 60% of children ages 7-17 years with persistent asthma maintain their prescribed inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) controller medication regimen (Arnold, Bixenstine, Cheng, & Tschudy, 2018). The purpose of this paper is to discuss a practice inquiry project that incorporated the implementation of an asthma medication dosing chart to increase compliance in pediatric asthma patients.
Method: The quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design evaluated the daily use of a medication dosing chart, which was to serve as a physical reminder …
Improving First Dose Administration Of The Hpv Vaccine For Adolescents In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic, Scarlett Mikesell-Pierce
Improving First Dose Administration Of The Hpv Vaccine For Adolescents In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic, Scarlett Mikesell-Pierce
DNP Projects
BACKGROUND: Nationwide more than 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Cervical cancer can be largely prevented by administration of the HPV vaccine for children before becoming sexually active. However, vaccination rates in the United States, remain low at 60%, and only 39.7% through series of completion, despite the strong evidence to support the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine. Research indicates a clinician’s recommendation, providing information and opportunity for discussion about the vaccine are strong motivators for parents to vaccinate their children, regardless of ethnicity. This study addresses the barriers to parent/caregiver intent to …

Getting The Most Out Of Pediatric Screenings, Carly R. Oliver
DNP Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the results of the Ages and Stages Questionnaire to the Survey of Well-Being of Young Children to determine if they produced the same outcomes. The Survey of Well-Being of Young Children offers additional screening tools that address risk factors for child abuse, that the Ages and Stages does not include. This project also surveyed the caregivers completing the questionnaires to determine which questionnaire they found more beneficial.
Background and Significance: In the United States, approximately 15% of children ages 3 to 17 years of age have at least one developmental disability. …
Childhood Immunization Tracking Practices By Healthcare Providers, Erin E. Clarke
Childhood Immunization Tracking Practices By Healthcare Providers, Erin E. Clarke
DNP Projects
Childhood immunizations protect children from life-threatening illnesses and are one of the most profound measures of the quality of pediatric primary care, however immunization rates for children under three years old still fall below national goals for up to date coverage. In addition to preventing children from getting serious illnesses, childhood vaccines prevent 21 million hospital visits, prevent 732,000 deaths, and save 1.38 trillion dollars in societal costs. Despite the many benefits of vaccines and the national recommendations, nearly 25% of children ages 19-35 months fall short of receiving all recommended vaccines. Kentucky demonstrates vaccination rates below the national average …

Emergency Nurses' Knowledge Of Pediatric Complaints, Kari J. Blackburn
Emergency Nurses' Knowledge Of Pediatric Complaints, Kari J. Blackburn
DNP Projects
Each year there are more than 25 million pediatric emergency department (ED) visits, with 37-60% of the complaints being non-urgent (Brosseau, Hoffman, Nattinger, Flores, Zhang and Gorelick, 2007). Injury is the number one reason children present to the ED and is strongly associated with a complaint of pain (AHRQ, 2013). While pain is a high volume reason for visiting the ED, there are other presentation causes that may pose a high risk to pediatric patients. Nausea and vomiting is not typically viewed as a high risk complaint, yet there are some high risk etiologies resulting in nausea and vomiting that …

Assessment Of Pediatric Primary Care Providers Behaviors And Procedures Regarding Pediatric Overweight And Obesity, Jessie N. Meiser
DNP Projects
CAPSTONE INTRODUCTION
Childhood overweight/obesity is a critical public health problem with devastating consequences. Many factors have combined to create the epidemic, and primary care providers can play an important role in addressing the problem by identifying overweight/obese children and encouraging them to engage in healthy behaviors. However, providers face a number of competing priorities making it difficult for them to provide these services effectively without outside support.
Obesity has reached an epidemic proportion in the nation’s youth. The Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health (2011) found that 35.7% of children age 10 – 17 in Kentucky are overweight …
