There are well known benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and child, yet the educational support from providers during prenatal visits is not consistent or well-documented. An educational presentation discussing guidelines of breastfeeding education, common breastfeeding problems and barriers to breastfeeding was developed and presented to a “Baby Friendly” hospital-based OB/GYN clinic staff at an urban St. Louis hospital. The goal was to increase staff knowledge and comfort providing education and resources surrounding breastfeeding to be used to increase discussion of breastfeeding during prenatal and postpartum visits. In spite of the alarming opioid abuse epidemic, the number of opioids prescribed to women who give birth has been overlooked and underregulated. In a large metropolitan hospital that has over 3,500 deliveries a year, this problem was identified through first-hand encounter and data collection from an electronic medical record. Women in the postpartum period were prescribed an unnecessary number of opioids upon discharge. The current opioid epidemic demands the development of new management policies and staff education to increase awareness of issues and improve care of patients with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). A recent dramatic increase in OUD during pregnancy has paralleled the epidemic observed in the general population. The combination of OUD and cesarean delivery, place both the mother with OUD and neonate at risk for increased postoperative complications. The purpose of this project was to evaluate and increase staff knowledge regarding OUD in obstetrics.
