Mentorship Program Including Alumni, Nicole Brainin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The landscape of advanced education in nurse anesthesia presents considerable challenges for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs), accentuated by demanding clinical hours and the transition from experienced ICU nursing to novice learners. This study explores the implementation of alumni mentorship within Nurse Anesthesia Programs (NAPs) to alleviate these stressors. An initial survey gauged alumni interest in mentorship roles, while a follow-up survey assessed the program's impact on student satisfaction and communication. Findings suggest that engagement and communication frequencies are lower than optimal, while alumni mentorship is perceived positively. Recommendations for enhancing the program include diversified communication channels, structured interactions, and …

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion In Nurse Anesthesia: Bridging The Gap, Aminat Yusuff-Akinbo Apr 2024

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion In Nurse Anesthesia: Bridging The Gap, Aminat Yusuff-Akinbo

The nurse anesthetist plays a crucial role in the healthcare system. Through intensive training, they provide safe and effective anesthesia care to patients across various healthcare settings. Currently, the nurse anesthesia field lacks diversity, with underrepresentation of minority groups such as Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous individuals. The United States Census revealed that there are more than 325 million residents. Yet only 10.9% of nurse anesthetists are of diverse racial backgrounds. This lack of diversity limits the cultural perspectives and experiences brought to patient care and perpetuates disparities in healthcare outcomes. An increase in diversity can improve care for individuals and …

Diversity In Nurse Anesthesia Education: Understanding The Perspective Of Racial-Ethnic Minority Nurse Anesthesia Students, Lorette Osun, Jeannette Ineza May 2023

Diversity In Nurse Anesthesia Education: Understanding The Perspective Of Racial-Ethnic Minority Nurse Anesthesia Students, Lorette Osun, Jeannette Ineza

The idea that race is not an issue, everyone is treated fairly, and the denial of racial differences is an act to refute that racism still perpetuates nursing education. Racial-ethnic minority student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) face unique challenges in their didactic and clinical training, including microaggressions, discrimination, and bias, all of which white students do not have to face during their educational experiences (Carter & McMillian-Bohler, 2020). Our project sought to highlight the lived experiences of ethnic minority student registered nurse anesthetists in the United States to bring awareness and effectuate change in nurse anesthesia education. Our Qualtrics survey …

Virtual Cadaver Dissection Prior To Clinical Experiences In Nurse Anesthesia, Hannah Ruholl, Kyle Smith May 2021

Virtual Cadaver Dissection Prior To Clinical Experiences In Nurse Anesthesia, Hannah Ruholl, Kyle Smith

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses are the foundation of anesthesia training. Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) must be A&P experts as they perform clinical skills for the first time. Traditionally, cadaver dissection has been used to enhance comprehension of A&P. However, not all facilities can allocate the time, space, or financial resources for cadaver dissection within their programs of study, especially at institutions that lie outside of major medical centers. Despite the presence of a virtual cadaver at a nurse anesthesia program in the Midwest, its introduction to SRNAs as a resource had not been fully employed. The goals of …

Lung Protective Ventilation During General Anesthesia: A Staff Education Project, Carrie L. Hasenstab May 2018

Lung Protective Ventilation During General Anesthesia: A Staff Education Project, Carrie L. Hasenstab

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Lung protective ventilation has shown to be an effective strategy of ventilation in perioperative patients. However, anesthesia providers often still employ traditional modes of ventilation. To improve the knowledge and utilization of lung protective ventilation during general anesthesia a clinical practice tool was developed. A PowerPoint educational program was utilized as the initial implementation of the lung protection tool. The practice guide and educational program was presented to anesthesia providers and PACU staff at a Southern Illinois Hospital. A pre/post survey served as the method of evaluation. The pre/post survey assessed the participant’s knowledge and utilization of lung protective ventilation …
