In the U.S., currently 37 states have legalized cannabis for medicinal use prescribed by qualified medical professionals (National Conference of State Legislatures [NCSL], 2022). In 2012, the legalization of recreational cannabis began; as of 2022, 19 states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana (NCSL, 2022). This project aimed to optimize care for patients using cannabis by increasing anesthesia provider knowledge about cannabis. The project's aim was accomplished through a thorough review of the current medical literature and implementation of education to anesthesia providers about the physiological effects and anesthesia implications of cannabis. Preeclampsia is a placental disease characterized by abnormal maternoplacental blood vessels and placental dysfunction resulting in fetoplacental hypoperfusion and maternal multi-system organ dysfunction (Wang et al., 2019). Expectant management of a hypertensive or preeclamptic parturient includes antihypertensive medications, magnesium sulfate for seizure prophylaxis, and early delivery of the fetus (ACOG, 2020). Neuraxial anesthetic-induced sympathectomy combined with circulating antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate therapy, and intravascular volume depletion in preeclampsia is thought to contribute to exaggerated hypotension.

Corneal abrasions are the most common ophthalmic injuries that occur in the perioperative period. Corneal abrasions that occur while the patient is under anesthesia are the result of either physical trauma, exposure, or patient related factors. Anesthesiology departments rarely develop continuing education focusing on the reduction of corneal abrasion incidence. Evidenced-based guidelines for corneal abrasion prevention techniques were reviewed while developing an educational program focused on corneal abrasion prevention amongst a group of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Although OSA has the ability to negatively impact postoperative outcomes, numerous patients remain undiagnosed, unidentified, and improperly treated for OSA at the time of surgery (Baugh, 2013; Opperer et al., 2016). After a literature review, and in collaboration with faculty stakeholders, an electronic medication near-miss reporting system was developed and activated. A Likert scale evaluation survey was designed and reviewed by experts. This medication near-miss survey was auto-populated for all students who utilized the system. Students were happy with the anonymity, ease of use, and time it took to report the near-miss. Sugammadex is a new medication used for the reversal of muscle relaxation induced by rocuronium, vecuronium, and pancuronium.
